Sankor/Kowa Anamorphic Lens Discussion and Footage

Marc, you are getting a very good price on having that stepup ring machined. Here in the USA it would cost a lot more - you usually can't get a machinist to even START on a project without committing to $75 and hour or so.

I have the Sankor 16F and like most of us, I really don't know what the thread size is. I ordered enough eBay hong kong step down rings that if the ones I get don't truly fit I will at least have an idea of what the range is. I wish I had the same model as you, I would go ahead and ask you to get a duplicate of yours made for me. It's possible that with enough numbers that price might even come down.

As I mentioned, I'm just hand holding mine at present but it did teach me quick one focusing method. First I would focus the A lens with out the amamorphic and then set the same distance by scale on the Sankor. That seemed to work well enough for getting it roughed in.

Diopters are for making a lens focus closer than it was designed to - but usually at the expense of losing the ability to focus to infinity. The lucky thing about my sankor 16F is that the front threads on it are 52mm. I used my 52mm pola on mine to do the handholding tests.

Yeah I figured it will be much more in Western countries. Back at my place in Germany people would laugh at you if you asked them to make one for 20$.
Jean, I suggest you get yourself a caliper and a tool to measure the thread pitch. Once you know the size and pitch for sure it's so much easier to look for something and you don't have to buy randomly.
Maybe you can have it checked in a shop for you if you don't have or want to buy the tools.

My camera already IS a beastly rig..

Frank, lets have it. Photos please :)

Footage us ip on my flickr page, I posted a link already but here it is again...

There is one shot where I pull the sanko lens off, in shot. Gives a good idea of what it does.

Jean, I hope you are not the driver, lol.

It's like deja vu all over again... so i went to the friendly local brisks and mortar camera store and asked them about the thread size on theinside barrel of my sankor 16F... and got the "gee it looks like 43 but maybe it is 42mm..... sorry can't help you" speech.

I sense some superglue in my future. Or JB Weld. Lovely.

relevant info" Sankor 16F anamorphic lens has threads inside the rear barrel, but they are not 43mm, and they appear to be smaller.

Your best strategy for focus is going to be to pre-focus with the zoom-in function on the preview screen (if available) because with the dual lenses racking focus is very hard. So whatever monitor you are using is as good as any in that department.

Getting the picture to unsqueeze is another topic however. If you don't find an answer here you might try a thread related more to monitors. I'd be curious to know how hard it might be to make it display on a computer screen - it seems like you would have some level of control over the monitor situation there. People have used various various HD/HDMI/DVI adaptors to get a signal to a laptop or a VGA monitor.... I'm guessing that part of the job is going to take some lengthy research and experimentation.

What camera are you using, and what are the options for a signal out?

Just posted a new video with the Sankor 16-D mounted with my DIY rig in Redwood Shores.

Hey Akira! That looks great! Quick question for you/me: What are we going to do now that we are Iscorama owners? (with our Sankor lenses?) I'm not really sure...I kind of like the ULTRA WIDE screen look. I'm sure the 1.333 on 16:9 that we get from the Iscorama is more usable....but I kind of like the Sankor look too. What are you thinking? (keep it? sell it? launch it into outer space?)

Well I'm not sure, I may keep it to use with the 7D or crop frame camera. It's not very practical with the 5D because of being limited to 100mm and up. It's really cool for panoramas and I do like the look. Trying to think of a way to use it in a practical sense aside from landscape shots is difficult. I may end up selling it, we'll see.

I hope I don't offend by invading the 5D forum :)
I'm an HVX-200 owner myself.

I've just joined the ranks of Sankor 16C owners and first I'd love to thank everyone for posting info, mounting options, footage, etc. etc.

I'll prolly do the same as you HHL(thanks to you specifically for all the footage and such) and glue on a ring. One question : What ring did you glue to the adapter?

Any advice from anyone before the lens shows up?

I'll be sure to post about my mounting, troubles, successes, and of course I'll have footage for everyone to peep their eyeballs on :)

Just for informations sake I have an HVX-200 with an M2(EOS mount), and two lenses : Super Takumar 50mm f1.4 M42 mount with adapter and a Soligor 90-230 f4.5 M42 mount with adapter.

P.S. Is it just me or do you guys count the blades in flare and Bokeh? lol

I've thought about this, and trust me I've been contemplating thus for awhile(been following all the anamorphic threads)...I've always either not had the cash, or simply had other things on my mind when an Isco was up for bid...but eventually I know I want one! I myself am not afraid to crop, de-noise(Neat Video), and then upscale footage(Instant HD) for artistic effect.

Here's the qualities that a 2x can give you that I feel are important:
1. Extremely long in the horizontal flares(cropped or otherwise)
2. Extremely out of focus and long in the vertical bokeh(cropped or otherwise)
3. An 'older' look to the footage
4. more ability to stretch footage while filming(drugged, beaten, insane) by rotating the element
5. A maximized ability to play with framing when intermixed with other aspect ratios(like starting a movie with these lenses, then at beginning of story letterboxing another aspect ratio and allowing it to expand for remainder of film)

Some of these things can be acheived with everday lenses or post techniques, but I myself like to depend as heavily as I can on optics, and then use post techniques to force these optics to fit together neatly.

I'm planning a short film right now, and I'll be using anamorphics, HDR technologies, morphing software, apparent dynamic range tech, seam carving, painterly techniques, and probably a couple other things that have skipped my mind!

I guess at the end of the day, what I'm trying to say is : Don't sell your options! We as artists strive on the ability to have any and every option at our disposal(within our means), and I think these 2x options are more then within our means....heck if I had it my way I'd have a 1.33, a 1.5, a 1.75, AND a 2x anamorphic, lol.

Hmm...embed doesn't seem to work.

I'm not sure if you mean Vimeo...I'm seeing the same problems. They've also had some problems in their search engine for awhile. Post a direct link to anything you need to show and it works though....it's always good form to give both a link and footage anyway.

I have the 52mm-42mm step down ring. I am using a D90 camera and I am using a 52mm Nikon DX lens. I hope this helps.

Sorry about the delay....my children (twins 6months old, 10 year old, 6 year old were diagnosed with Swine Flu 2days ago) Not getting much sleep...haven't been logging on much...

I hope you and yours are doing well, and from what I understand if you have a good diet, medical care, sanitation, etc., then it's not all that much worse then the regular flu. What I was really wondering was the exact dealer and product you purchased, as I know that different rings are made differently.......so, as I know that yours has worked out well with the glue method, I was hoping to copy your results exactly.

Thanks again for your efforts, and definitely your willingness to help the DVXuser community in your time of sickness....Kudo's to you, the anamorphic super hero :engel017:
