Sanken CS-1e versus Rode NTG3

Hi guys,

I want to buy an on camera mic for a Panasonic AF-101 and I'm divided between the Sanken CS-1e and a Rode NTG3. The Sanken is great because of it's smaller size (better suited for the Panasonic) but it's more expensive than the Rode...

What do you think is better suited for documentary work? Most of it run and gun...

Thanks for your help, always was well treated in this part of this great forum even if my questions aren't the brightest...

The Sanken is probably the beter mic of the two that you mentioned. In that same range I might consider a Sennheiser MKH-60 because it has particularly low self and handling noise, as well as being built for adverse conditions. You can probably pick up a used one for the same price as the first two microphones new. They last forever, so you should be good. However, if you are mounting on-camera (not ideal) I think you might want to consider a long shotgun, because chances are you going to be at a considerable distance to your subject from an audio point of view. The Sennheiser mkh-70 or the Sanken cs3-e are better candidates for this, with the Senny built a little more sturdier for outside use and the Sanken with great off axis rejection and a nice roll off (can be used inside in a pinch).

Don't know many people with CS-1e experience as it's still fairly new. NTG3 has been around a little longer and more people have had experience with it over time, so that's what I would recommend.

Do any of you commentors own or actually use a cs1, or are these comments conjecture. Let's keep it real, or reel at least.

Thanks Ty, that was a typo on my part. Interesting that many compare the 416, to the ntg3, or at least close.

Actually, everything that I have heard suggests that the Sanken CS-3e is the one to be looking at, but that of course is more expensive....
