SanDisk Ultra Class 10 stops many recordings on 60D

So I have a SanDisk Ultra 32GB Class 10 card, after benchmarking it, it had a write speed of up to 11MB/s and a read speed of up to 20MB/s.

The problem is, it keeps on messing up videos. I was using a Canon 60D this weekend and it kept on stopping recordings after 3 seconds of recording. The card is fast enough, but it's clearly not since it kept on stopping recordings. It happened 15 or so times out of the 100 or so total video clips I recorded (that includes the failed recordings). The card is 4 months old. It can record long files, it just fails from time to time which is extremely annoying.

The 60D's buffer is larger than the T2i/T3i.

I'm not using Magic Lantern, I'm using stock Canon firmware.

I've also used SanDisk Extreme Class 10 UHS-1 cards, after benchmarking it, it had a write speed of up to 20MB/s and a read speed of up to 20MB/s.

Absolutely no problems with these cards so it must mean that for whatever reason, the SanDisk Ultra is messing up the recordings. The Extreme models never failed recordings for me.

I even had problems with this card on a Nikon DSLR shooting 1080p video and Nikon uses a much lower bitrate too.

Essentially I'm disappointed with the performance of this card. I've formatted the card on a PC prior to the video shoot.

Anyone else run into these problems with the SanDisk Ultra?

best practice is to format the cards in-camera.

If you use another card on the same camera, is the problem still there?

So why is it the best practice to format the cards in-camera? I'm a bit curious with that. I usually format using in-camera anyways since the card is already in the camera and I wouldn't want to take the card out, plug into card reader, then into computer back and forth.

I've used the same card (when I got it 4 months ago) in a T3i for a convention, got the recording problem a few times. It was a while back so I don't fully remember.

When it was 1 month old, I used it in a T2i, no recording problems I believe for that card (don't remember) for a long video shoot in a church.

When I use another card on the same camera (60D), no problems with the SanDisk Extreme cards. I've used Transcend Class 10 cards (the cheap, non-UHS-1 ones) and there were no recording problems although I didn't use much of it. I used an Acumen Class 6 16GB, a few similar recording problems but I blame the card being a Class 6. Benchmarked it and it consistently wrote at 8MB/s. The Canon bit rate needs a write speed of around 5.7MB/s but for easier reading I'd say 6MB/s.

Any good Class 10 SDHC card you buy today should have a write speed of 15 MB/sec or better.

If the card is messing up, then use it for some other non-video purpose ( most of my Class 6 cards are in audio recorders ) and buy new cards. Good Class 10 cards are quite cheap.
