Samyang Optics Cinema Optimized Lens

For those who don't want to wait until they adapt the rest of their lenses, just let you know Samyang already offers declicked versions of their primes.

Just search in eBay for "Samyang XXX video "

I had my 35mm 1.4 declicked from FotoTip (the official distributor for Europe), and plan to have the declicked 14mm 2.8 soon.

You can put a Fat Zip Tie from Half Inch Rails to use the follow focus, and voila!

But, I guess they're releasing all their primes in video version.

What I don't understand is why did they start with the 8mm fisheye, and not any of the others (14, 24, 35, 85mm)

This is what they said:

Rokinon Yes, we are planning "cinevised" versions of all our lenses. They will not be available for while though. They are still in research and development

I wouldn't hold my breath.
We can have the declicked iris versions now, "cine-mod" them a bit (0.8 pitch mod gears + 77mm fronts) and have them as a B Lens set when the Cine versions arrive :)

The point is, this isn't just one of their other lenses with focus and iris gears slapped on. it's a rehoused special purpose lens with a metal barrel... Hopefully they will wise up and at least make a 35/1.4, 50/1.4, and 85/1.4 set.

Also, 3.5 is slow, but not that slow if you have an ISO native 800 sensor.

Indeed. My standard wide lenses I use all the time are a 28mm 3.5 and a 35mm 3.5. I have a 28mm 2.8, but don't like the IQ as much so rarely use it. No real need for anything faster than 2.8 in a wide lens in my world. I'm a FF shooter, so I'm actually using them as wides not normals. 3.5 would be very slow for a normal.

Which one would you guys really prefer, the Nikon AIS primes of the Samyang ones? I have never got any chance to compare my nikons with the Samyang...

The focus throw on the Rokinons/Samyangs is pretty superb (so far as still lenses for video usage are concerned). Personally I prefer to use my Rokinons (35mm and 85mm, probably 24mm as well in the near future) for video work.

I can't find one for the 24mm :/

Signed. There is an even bigger demand for a moderate priced fast cinema zoom. There are none out there and demand will explode with the new black magic camera.

8mm? Thats the least sensible place to start.. why the hell would you need a follow focus on a slow 8mm lens?

That's EXACTLY what I thought when they announced it. And, even omitting that detail, the fisheye is a lens to use for a very special effect, not an everyday lens, so I don't see much people adding it to their video lens set.

I hope they don't judge the necessity of a "Cinema Style" lens set on how well the 8mm T3.8 sells...

If they release the 35mm (14, 24 and 85mm too) "Cinema Style", it'll sell like hotcakes! Since those are regular lenses we'd use for any work.

Yeah, I saw that on dpreview when they first posted it. I would have posted that link, except while I love the 8mm, I'll pass on the 3.5. Too slow. Yes, I understand the challenge in making something small, wide, and fast with close focus, but 3.5 is really, really too slow.

Slow? You're kidding. It's APS-C lens. Not sure what camera you wanna use it with, but if it's APS-C then tell me what your faster alternatives are, because I don't know many. How fast can you go with this focal length? 2.8? It's just 1/2 stop faster (or maybe 2/3) - definitely not enough to justify saying that it's "really, really too slow".

any updates on their new de-clicked or cinemized lenses? Website or blog on the new lense models?

Thanks

I believe on their facebook page... a 24, 35 & 85 are coming in Sept.... many people have requested the 50 & 100 or a 135... I read Matt Duclos write up on the 14... says for the money its a good lens...
