Samyang Optics Cinema Optimized Lens

I wrote a letter to this company about 9 months ago suggesting that they should offer cinema optimized versions of their lenses. Looks like they took part of what I was suggesting to heart. If you like what you see you should write them a letter mentioning that we'd like to see a complete set of economy cinema style lenses from them, and perhaps a set in PL mount. Feel free to mention my name in the email and that I had already suggested this to them, but that they ignored me until now. Here's the lens. I'd love to get a sample in Nikon Mount to try with Canon,Nikon, Red One, and Panasonic HDSLRS

Yeah, I saw that on dpreview when they first posted it. I would have posted that link, except while I love the 8mm, I'll pass on the 3.5. Too slow. Yes, I understand the challenge in making something small, wide, and fast with close focus, but 3.5 is really, really too slow.

The point is, this isn't just one of their other lenses with focus and iris gears slapped on. it's a rehoused special purpose lens with a metal barrel... Hopefully they will wise up and at least make a 35/1.4, 50/1.4, and 85/1.4 set.

Also, 3.5 is slow, but not that slow if you have an ISO native 800 sensor.

These guys really need to do the cinema versions of the 35mm & 85mm's- I bought one of the 85mm's just for fun and was surprised just how great the lens was- I use it instead of nikon or canon's now. Im really hoping the 35mm is as good as their 85mm.

BTW- Kinda weird to gear a circular fisheye, with which you would most likely never move focus on!

I sent them an email the other day, asking for the exact same primes you mention here (including a 50mm f1.4 or f1.2) and the 14mm f2.8 too. The email addresses I sent it to are "rnd at syopt.co.kr" and "seoul at syopt.co.kr". I couldnt' find other emails with @samyang.com or @samyang.pl. Where did you sent your mail to? I hope they listen to us... Having a Cine Style Prime lens set from them would rock!

Fingers crossed!!

That would be great if we could do like a lobby to make them see that there is a real market for a set of cine prime lens. They already have most of the tech, they just need to rehouse some of there lens and develop a 20-24 and a 50 mm. They would be an instant hit because to the contrary of the still market, there main disadvantage which is auto-focus is not needed here. They would just need to complement them with an anamorphic adapter. A $ 300 to $ 500 per lens would sell like hot cakes. With all the HDslr, Af-100, Sony F3 and soon to come Sony NXCAM/fs-100, it will be a huge market.

OK guys, I've set up an online petition for this: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/samyang_cine_lenses/

Check it and let me know if you think something should be added or modified.

Once we agree it's OK, we can start spreading the word on Twitter, Facebook, and so on...
We can use the Twitter hashtag #SamyangCineLens

Let's make this happen!!

Petition signed.

Thanks Sacksnack!

We already have 4 petitions signed (including mine, which is the first one of course :D)

So... let's spread it on Twitter (#SamyangCineLens) and give it likes on Facebook (there's an icon to do it on the petition page)

We can post this on other forums (Vimeo Groups), mail to friends...

C'mon!!

Noted, Voted.

Let's see if they do anything.

Corporations are quite slow to adapt.

Seeing that they did it with the 8mm, and the press release said: "In order to meet filmmakers' needs, Samyang Optics has decided to launch product of utterly new generation ",
I have hope :)

I have yet to see one of these lenses in real life... I guess we will see.

Also, who needs a focus gear on an 8mm? everything will be in focus... (roughly ha!)

Typical, you know? Like - we heard buzz about something, but we don't actually understand what's happening.

I've got the 8mm in Nikon mount and its AWESOME, sharp as by 5.6 and its rectanglaur not cicular! Awesome Effects Lens

I don't know if you can add some other requirements. An adaptall type of mount where you can buy the lens mount for your particular camera manufacturer. I think zeiss does that, they wont have to develop multiple mount version. But perhaps they won't feel it as a good commercial move. Guess then we will all buy the Nikon version.

Another one I think is the last hurdle for indi filmaking is anamorphic look. If we could get a higher version of the Panasonic LA7200 which was developed for SD hvx100 it would be a best seller. Just look at the length of forum discussion on Anamorphic adapters as a proof. When you see the price of iscorama jumping from $ 400 to $ 3000 because of the interest in these, you can see that it would be a best seller because there are no cheap alternative.

It's been a while, but I though that this thread and concept was worth revisiting, as there is most definitely a need in the market for good and inexpensive cinema lenses with longer focus throw in order to save the AC's of the world from stress related aging.

Also, I for one would love a good and cheap, yet quality anamorphic option.
