Samsung nx1 jerky movements

hey diegocervo. can you supply a download link to the converter you found. it seems when i googled it, it brought up a ton of different conveyers with different names.

To date, the best software I found to transcode and minimize banding is RM movie converter for mac. However, it only does a good job when converting H265 to H264. Prores is messed up.
I use FCPX then to convert h264 to prores.
No doubt that this workflow is time consuming, but I noticed much less artifacts when doing a grade.

I've been transcoding to prores. I'll try h264 first. Just got a 128gb ram upgrade for my little trashcan Mac Pro, hopefully it'll speed things up.

sure, no problem. Actually it is my fault. I didn't mention the full name of this little piece of software.
It's called Rockymountain movie converter.
It's a bit tricky to find it, but this old link should guide you to it.

here are some more info on this software as well.

And these are a before and after screenshots of a recent color correction I had to do on a clip I shot last week, took with wrong WB on a cloudy day and slightly underexposed.
Honestly I had no problem to pull a clean key of clothing, skin and sky. In the corrected clip I don't see the typical artifacts that I used to see the first weeks with the NX1, when I used wondershare or iffmpeg.
Again, the trick is to convert with RM to H264 first. Then FCPX will do an excellent job to transcode to prores.

Cheers,
Diego

wow diegocervo. great skin tones. Shot is organic and detailed. Mind sharing which lens you used. Also thanks for the find, about to check it out. Oh, but the way was this shot in 4k then down converted?

I love the "natural" look out of this camera. Really nice.

(I'd bet more than half of it is down to the user, not the camera, though)

diegocervo - you get some of the best images I've seen out of the NX1. Nice job. I'm going to shoot this weekend and try your h265->h264->prores thing out.

Thanks guys, but really...there is nothing special about that image. Just a translucent reflector above the models to cut the sunlight and the magic 45mm from Samsung.
Maybe it's that the models are nice :)

By the way, I still didn't have the time to run any scientific tests comparing RM vs other softwares.
But to my eyes images look better.
What I'm sure is that H265 to Prores HQ in RM is a no no.

Cheers

Diegocervo, Thanks again for the find on the Rm transcoder. It works beautiful and my findings through test of h265 to prores, and h264 are just as you've said. The H264 transcode looks very clean and I'm getting a ton of random artifacts that pop up in the prores files. I only wish there was a comparable transcoder that allowed for a artifact free prores that did 4k with that rm speed. Would make this cam so much more enjoyable to work with. But for this image quality I will not be greedy.

You are very welcome!
After many years spent using ext recorders and working directly to prores, it's a PITA to step back and spent so much time transcoding. But the colors coming out of the NX1 are worth the wait.

I was thinking of buying the new pix E when available but I don't know if this will seriously improve image quality.
H265 is amazing already and we're still talking 8bit externally. Besides, motion artifacts are not an issue with h265 so a recorder wouldn't add anything relevant.

Because of the horrible micro hdmi port, the recorder must be rigged in a very safe way and that would eliminate any advantage of working with a light dlrs such as the NX1.

But hey, it sounds like I'm trying to convincing myself to save some money!

Can someone provide a good raw h265 clips with tones for highlight and other with shades of gray and low light areas to test different software and format for transcoding quality, banding, etc.?

All this work just makes me wish for H265 support in Premiere. From what people are getting from transcoded files, native editing must be incredible. I want the image quality without the large files darnit! Or the ability to transcode to Cineform or DNxHD instead of ProRes.

+1

What the NX1 needs to sweep the market:
* a wider gamma curve (so it can match the FS7 in DR, or be very close)
* a focal reducer (speedbooster or lensturbo2) (so I can use my vintage full frame glass to its full potential)
* H.265 support in Premiere etc (so we can skip the transcode step and get the full file size benefits)

Unfortunately for Samsung, only one of those three is actually in their hands. It's the most important one, though, so let's see what they do about it.

Gamma DR, with all other settings at default.
Lens samsung 45mm, at f2 in the door shot and 2.8 in the other one.
Iso 200

Believe me, artifacts are much more manageable with RM conversion.
In this shot I pushed fair enough the image with curves and banding is barely noticeable. If I had added some grain it would have almost disappeared.

Ok, i see the artifacts without transcoding, so no conversion will remove this. Excuse me, but this is at high quality bitrate (Pro Mode 80Mbps) or the less?
