Samsung nx1 jerky movements

I use the touch screen focus a lot, just tap the screen over someone's eye and it locks almost instantly. I've zoomed in a number of times to check for accuracy and its been spot on 100% of the time. I don't check anymore and I haven't had any issues - and I'm shooting in 4k. The rack focus - when set to the slowest speed - works great too, doesn't have the camcorder hunting look. Its very smooth, freaking brilliant really. Canon's dual pixel AF is just as good. AF has come a long way since the EX3. I understand some will never trust it, for me its just another tool at my disposal and it works really well - especially for run-and-gun stuff.

Actually the touch screen feature you are talking about sounds great. I've seen tests and wondered how well it worked. This is a really useful feature because the shooter is telling the camera what to jump to in a rack focus. The old days the camera just looked around for something to focus on which was at best a 50/50 chance to get it wrong. In this case it would be a planned shot that could be repeated in a number of takes. It's really a computer replacement if follow focus to a degree . Any samples on youtube?

I'm not an AF user either, but the NX1 has in-sensor phase detect AF (209 points), and it seems to work really, really well in video mode. Test.
No idea if it can use face-detect or something like that so you can tell it what you want, or it just makes its own guess. But with phase-detect, it focuses correctly and with no hunting at whatever object it wants to focus.

Yes Samuel I agree. When I saw this auto focus tracking test I got interested in the NX1 over the GH4. I was waiting for NAB before buying but nothing new there in this range. Some brilliant new gear from BMD if it arrives and works as it looks in the demos, but I need something right now. I have 2 Canons I'd really like to part with. NX1 or GH4? Votes please.

One thing I was bummed about was the screen that does not turn around, but I have a Samsung v phone so can I just use that as view screen?

Hey Rockmore. Get the Nx1! This cam is a beast and it seems like the latest version has solved my perceived jerkiness from this cam in which turned out to be the auto exposure. The color and images are just amazing and the trick is Old prime lenses in which has solved harsh highlight roll off giving it a very organic look from some of the samples I've seen. just got my adapter for nikon in and will be throwing some old glass on this beast. If this thing holds up after future testing then I may hold off on the ursa mini.

About AF generally: I understand those who are ''manual fanatics'', but things in technology are changing in our favour and I dont see the reason why we shouldnt take advantage of that. For those that havent tried Canon's DPAF for example, Id just say...give it a try someday...it will change your mind:-)
Now...if NX1's AF is even better (as claimed) I can just say that is a REALLY strong feature of the camera among all the other excellent features it has. Looking forward to try it out and compare it to my 70D...

NX1 vs. GH4? I own neither, but my next body will be an NX1unless something really surprises me at NAB.

NX1 gives you the bigger sensor (huge in my book), pro lenses that could conceivably make me eventually dump Nikon overall and have an all-samsung stills setup, but beyond all of that, they really seem to "get it" far more than Panasonic, Canon and Nikon. The speed of their firmware updates and the fact they addressed filmmaker concerns within like 60 days of the camera's release was pretty shocking. 1st manufacturer to release an SDK is kind of mind boggling (only for camera control, but even that is huge - a big company that gets the power of open-source and specialized apps?? WTF???)

I'll be curious to see if they keep this up over the next couple years, but they seem to be really aggressive about being a major player. AND they manufacture their sensors which is also huge if they continue to think about the motion market for their cameras. Samsung and BMC are really the guys to watch right now, as far as fresh thinking applied to affordable products.

One thing not talked about enough in reviews - the fact that I can control many of the NX1's shooting functions via an app on my iPhone 6+. Supposedly Android integration is even better, so I'm considering getting a cheap Andriod tablet or phone that's a generation or two old and using it as a wifi only device. Even with the iOS limitations, I can move through all the PASM functions, change resolution of stills and video, tinker with all the exposure parameters, use the touchscreen AF and trigger stills/video recording. Its basically a live view remote with camera control. The big drawback - when using the NX1's built in wifi, it really sucks down the battery. Andriod can sync with bluetooth or NFC, which should draw less power than my NX1 wifi hotsopt. Its pretty cool though.

Apologies to the OP for taking this thread OT.

I think there's no contest: NX1 all the way

* Just as sharp.
* Much bigger sensor. The GH4, in UHD or 4K mode, is 2.3x crop, so, even with a speedbooster it can just match the NX1 in this respect.
* Much better DR. The GH4 is horrible in this respect.
* Much less noise. It is really surprising on the GH4 how much noise there is. And NR at 4K is SLOW (at least with Denoiser II, no idea about neatvideo). This noise thing is particularly important if you do a lot of greenscreen.
* RS is bad in 4K mode, but great in 1080p, and because of motion blur you don't usually need 4K on a fast-moving shot that will be ruined by RS.
* AF, if you are into that.

The only downsides for the NX1 so far:
* No speedbooster (would be great to make it FF-equivalent) (not sure if it is possible to make one or not).
* Lack of support for H.265 (yet)

The biggest plus for the NX1 may be what Michael said about Samsung being open and listening. If they make it record RAW video, or, even better, add a gamma mode that preserves all the DR from the sensor, it will be a KILLER cam (in RAW stills, the DR is not too far from the best FF cameras: worse than the D810 but better than the a7II; check this).

I think the downside is not the codec (yet to be implemented on NLEs) but the compression/bitrate of this. Every subtle plain surface or dark area is destroyed by the algorithm, so this need to be tweaked. The GH4 with all the noise inside retain this and the details thanks to the bitrate/codec params enforcing this.
Other glitch: the detail in the modes UHD vs DCI 4K is different, the last is softer... why?

Anyone test the HDMI output to a recorder?

Haven't tested it externally, so can't answer anythingt with that. I've preordered the Blackmagic monitor, so sometime in the near future I'll be able to test - pending BM's ability to deliver.

From what I've read UHD is the full sensor readout and 4k is UHD slightly upscaled - hence the slight drop in resolution. Also, converted footage isn't as good as stuff straight out of the camera - regardless of quality settings. Something is getting lost in translation. I don't think its a bitrate issue as h265 is a more efficient method of compression, but a conversion issue.

hey photochris. your are right in your observation that footage is not as clean as off the cam once transcoded. Do you think an external recorder would eliminate that issue at all. Footage still looks amazing under the right lighting conditions. I'm seeing more of the drop in the shadows once transcoded.

I'm not sure, that's why I ordered the recorder. Shadows seem to suffer the most after transcoding. I also see occasional banding that's not in the SOOC files. I haven't really seen anything from the NX1 with an external recorder. I'm fine with 1080p, so that's why I pulled the trigger with the Blackmagic monitor instead of getting a Shogun or one of the new Pix recorders. I'm on a Mac so no native h265 support yet. I shoot a lot with my other camera (D750) for quick turnaround stuff. Hopefully the BM monitor will allow me to use the NX1 more.

Do you think the sudden decrease in quality above ISO 1600 (that is mentioned in every test I ve seen) has anything to do with transcoding...or with H265 somehow? If thats the case, there is still hope that it can perform decent in higher ISOs...
I saw that video recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAqfsFa3Noo
and it doesnt look bad to me even at 6400...but everything else Ive seen looks bad...Im comfused!
Have you test the camera in low light/high ISO situations?

Iyrov, I'm getting the degradation in the shadows after transcoding even at lower Iso's of 100 to 800, so I'm pretty sure it's the way the h265 is being handled in the transcoding process. I have faith that a strait to prores recorder via sdi out will remedy this and will give us a nice clean image for grading. As of now the transcoded footage is not ready for any extra massaging in post. If anyone here has the cam and have experimented with the nx1 to external recorder please post your findings.

Will you translate that? hahaha
Ok...Im keeping this one:
In short: Samsung can currently provide the cleanest 4K image, for all other cameras, there are always trade-offs between luma and chroma filtering. Thus, the 4K image quality is always a trade between clean sharpness (= many small pixels) and high dynamic range / intensity (= few, large pixel). Sony has chosen A7s favor of the latter, and thus is certainly not entirely wrong. More impressions from Atomos Shogun in conjunction with the Sony A7s soon can you read at this point ...

Thank you reem12...I wish I had the camera to play with...Samsung-Greece doesnt even have a clue about when the camera will be available here:-(

My summary is not far from your google translator thing:
It's a comparison of 4K cameras shooting a resolution test chart. It shows that the NX1 is significantly sharper and cleaner than the GH4, the FS7 (edit: with standard gamma; slog3 will probably be cleaner), or the a7S+Shogun. And just a bit sharper and cleaner than the Blackmagic 4K Production Camera.

I'm not sure it has anything to do with DR.

To date, the best software I found to transcode and minimize banding is RM movie converter for mac. However, it only does a good job when converting H265 to H264. Prores is messed up.
I use FCPX then to convert h264 to prores.
No doubt that this workflow is time consuming, but I noticed much less artifacts when doing a grade.
