Samsung NX1 and the 50-150mm 2.8 S zoom

Hello all

Extensive and non scientific test footage using the NX1 and the 50-150mm 2.8 S lens. The zoom is top of the line in the NX lens range. My impressions: Having compared it to my legacy lenses (Rokkor, Nikon, Canon Fd) I'll say it beats them all in terms of resolution. I don't have any other NX lenses to compare to.

I kept the lens in autofocus mode (yeah, I know video people use manual exclusively) to test autofocus accuracy. Ois on, Dis on (even on tripod), Gamma DR, sharp -8, contrast -8 and saturation -4.

The weight was initially a shock, coming from the Gh2 camera, but I got used to it really fast.

The 4k test footage is pretty boring.... each shot is around 8 seconds long to allow for detail peeping.

In conclusion: Awesome!

When you say weight do you mean it is heavier or lighter than the Gh2? The footage looks good. I have been thinking of getting this camera. Did you have any issues downloading onto you desk top and getting the footage onto your time line?

The weight of the NX1 camera body is heavier than the small and light Gh2. The 50-150 2.8 S is probably the heaviest lens Samsung currently has. But I got used to the body/zoom combo fairly quickly. It was only a shock at first because I've been using the Gh2 for the last couple of years.... and forgot how light it was.

I have no problems with the NX1 4K footage as I have a pretty fast computer with Cuda graphics card. To get the footage into Premiere CC, I use Power Director to convert H265 to Xavc, which is then imported into Premiere. Power Director was really fast at converting, which was a pleasant surprise for me.... maybe 20 percent slower than real time. However, Power Director chokes when scrubbing or playing back h265 footage on the timeline, so I edit in Premiere instead.

In summary, I don't find any issues with the H265 workflow.

I really like the footage from the NX1, and bought into it even in the face of rumors that Samsung was closing down the camera department.

How is the weight compare to the Canon 5d mk3?

As for lens I wonder which would be a better lens to start out with since both of them are over $1k Samsung 50-150 or Samsung 35-50 - using them for a short film shoot.

And finally I wonder how well the L canon lens would work on that camera with the adapter?

Hiya New_Zealand:

I've never handled a Canon 5d mk3, so I can't compare. Is there a Samsung 35-50? I think you may have mistyped.

Not sure if it is wise to use L lenses on the Nx1.... no way to change aperture.

Yeah - the problem with the NX1 is that to really maximize on its capabilities you need those top of the line Samsung lenses too - and that's NOT cheap.
So really you have to look at it as investing in a whole separate ecosystem, lenses and all.

But - Samsung's pro zooms are way more reasonably priced than current & comparable Nikkors or Canons.

I'm watching Samsung over the next year or so. I wouldn't be surprised to see me dump Nikon bodies completely for my commercial work, use Samsung glass for stills gigs, and keep my Nikkor glass for video gigs - and have the Samsung glass for shoots where I want IS or things are more run & gun.

Then add a 4k ProRes recorder and that could be a setup that lasts for several years… and still have my Nikkors for shooting B&W film on my old metal bodies. Because I still really love my darkroom.

Then again, I wouldn't mind having an Ursa mini...
