Samish Lake - ala Disjecta

This last weekend my wife and I went to my aunts summer home on Lake Samish for some nice R&R. So what does a cinematographer do on vacation? Bring along his HVX of course! Below you will find links to the footage that I shot- check it out- I hope you enjoy it. I put it together Disjecta style-

Very nice. I loved the colors. Looks like it must have been a nice vacation. I like being able to just sit anywhere with the camera and explore for a shot at your own pace. Very relaxing. For a true Disjecta film though you would need some water fowl. lol

I'm glad you liked it. Yeah it is a lot of fun to just be able to go at my own pace, and see what happens- no schedule to worry about, no pressure. It was a nice vacation.

Yeah, the only water fowl I came across that was of any interest was that blue herring- and it just sat on top of the piling for over an hour. I think I would have seen more if I hadn't "slept in" - I'd get up at about 7:30 am and go film for a little while. Usually by then people would be out on the lake water skiing- scaring off most animals.

So Ryan, when are you getting the Redrock???
Lots of great shots. Just watch that camera shake.
It really gets amped up on a 52" screen.....

Not soon enough! :) I have the LetusFlip, which worked well for the DVX, but I think I'll need the Redrock for the HVX. I need to get a stepdown ring to test the Letus on the HVX .... Anyway, I'm definately saving up to get the Redrock.

Yeah, a couple of those shots were out on a dock, and with the boats passing by it made the dock really shake! there is one clip where in the original you can hear the boat get close and the skier is coming toward the dock- I had to pick up the camera and run before the camera got sprayed with water ....

wow. this quality is making me change my mind about getting the dvx100b. nice shots. i wouldve liked to hear how well the camera picks up audio though. cool.

haha FilmBoy, Why in the world would you step backward and get a SD camera, when HD is available....oh God and we wont even talk about P2 and how advanced it is.

Ryan,
As always pants wetting beautiful footage. I went up to several lakes that kind of looked like that up in the Rockie Mountains, but it was like 80Degrees and no time to film :) you pull focus well. good stuff all around. With a lake named Shamis, I would have expected some Irish Jib music:)

loved it. more people should watch stuff like that. then they'd be less impressed inclined to feed the mind with total vapid crap.

great with morning tea

being cheap i guess :undecided in addition to being a little wet behind the ears on filmmaking, lol. i've been reading about this hvx200 but am still confused on what the advantages of this P2 card is versus tape???? so how advanced is it???

Hmmmm.. let's see.

No more digitizing.
Ability to watch a clip a moment after you stop shooting.
Ability to delete a clip.. and just that clip.
Ability to shoot true slow-motion
Ability to shoot timelapse
ability to turn on the record buffer so that it's constantly recording and when you press the button.. it's been recording for 3 seconds.. in HD> So ya never miss a soundbite or a whale launching out of the water.

Or how about the ability to record for 3 hours or more without stopping if you have a laptop or P2store.
And the moment you press record.. it records. NO tape lag.
No dropped frames

The DVX100 isn't in the same league... and franky. I hate shooting tape now. Seems like so 1997... YIKES

:dankk2:wow, thas a lot. but you stated a coupla things i have read that made me confused. basically, when you say "true slow-motion" are you basically saying it can record in slow motion without you having to manually slow down the frames in your editing software?

you say "ability to delete a clip and just that clip" so basically if i film 5 different takes of a scene, i can go in the P2 controls or the camera settings and delete the takes i dont want BEFORE i even do my editing?

also, you said no more digitizing. isnt it digitized once it is captured into your editing software? or since it is HD it will not lose any quality whatsoever?

sorry for the newbie questions, i am more of a screenwriter and am just now getting kinda everything at once - FCP Professional, Mac and deciding which camera to go with. i've been reading all this stuff all day at work for the past coupla days. :)

Yes, and it looks a million times better than stuff that's been slowed down in editing software.

Exactly.

What he should perhaps have said is "no more CAPTURING". The footage on the P2 card is already captured. If you're using EDIUS or Avid you can just drop the clips on the card right on the timeline and start editing. With tape if you shoot footage then you'll still have to go through a phase of logging, marking in & out points, and capturing; when you're done you have clips on your hard disk that you can now edit. Well, that's where P2 STARTS. It does all that stuff for you, so on the card you have edit-ready clips.

I don't want to hijack this thread too much more. The footage looks awesome. Didn't get to say that. Really impressive..

but in answering. Yes, it's true slow-mo like a film cam. You can shoot 60frames per second.. have it play back at 24 and that's 2.5 times slower.. without it being done in the computer. There's real information on each frame...

You can definitely delete your clips if you know you don't like them.. and make markers on the ones you want.. I believe.

There isn't digitizing. just importing into FCP.. or dragging to the HD.

You'd just need FCP 5 and you are all set... Personally, I'd say to buy the HVX... use it with mini DV.. and then upgrade to the P2 and all that when you are ready. It's so much of a better camera.. with so many upgrades and reasons to own it over a standard DV cam..

Again.. back to this. That lake and footage does look gorgeous. How big is the lake? Reminds me of one I used to go to in NH>...

Thanks for showing...

Barry is fast on the draw! Beat me too it... I also think that Barry and Jarred and everyone else here... were reason enough to jump ship and buy the HVX. I mean, some of the footage is so impressive.... And the green screen and color correction options are INCREDIBLE>..

cool...i understand much better now that its been explained in Laymans terms...thnx a bunch Barry and Justyn!:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

also sorry for jackin the thread, but the footage you posted just changed my mind completely about what camera i will be getting next week!

Quite nice, 235. Makes me miss the Pacific NW.

Can you give any details with your camera settings? Cinelike V, D, detail, master ped etc.?
