Same Day Edit - Wedding Highlight

This wedding was shot and edited yesterday. We played it during the reception, converted the footage in Final Cut to ProRes LT with the new EOS Plug-in. I don't recommend this method, luckily we had 2 hours of down time to convert the footage. Please feel free to ask if you have any questions regarding this edit or any feed back is great to hear good or bad..

Curious to know what you didn't you like about using the EOS Plug-in as I've had nothing but positive experiences with it!

There were a fair few weaker shots and awkward cuts in there that I think would have been ironed out had you taken longer to cut. Were you the guy talking about doing same day wedding edits recently? While it seems like a good idea, I think your edits would benefit from an extra day or two in the editing and grade process to make them look better.

These types of critiques really blow my mind. I have to ask, Do you have any idea how difficult it is to shoot, transcode, edit, transcode again and display an same day edit at a wedding? Do you really think the people at this wedding who experienced this first hand noticed something like a "weaker shot and an awkward cut"... You have obviously never experienced a SDE. Its instant gratification, tears, joy, and most of all instant referrals.
This video clearly demonstrates talent, skill, storytelling, and professionalism at its best. I'm proud of this of this video, why you ask? I had nothing to do with it however, it raises the bar and the awareness to brides and grooms of what a wedding film should and could look like. This SDE is truly inspiring and I can only hope that some day I could deliver something half as good as this to my client on the day of their wedding.

I'm begging my fellow DVXUSER's to chime in here if I'm totally off base and out of wack...

Umm, yes I do. We've turned around multicam music videos in under 24hours to an exceedingly high spec. Ever tried transcoding 8hours of footage, providing three cuts, grading, and delivering in 24hours? I am well aware of what it takes to deliver a video that quickly.
My critique was about there being weaker shots which could have been removed to tighten the edit (which would also have saved time transcoding) and make it flow better. I understand the power of SDE's at a wedding, but I think that would've been far outweighed by spending some time grading and being a bit more brutal in the edit which what stays and what goes. Your client may not notice the awkward cuts, but as a director/videographer I wouldn't be happy unless I thought I'd delivered the best content I could. I've done wedding videos too before you ask, and I delivered within 2 days of the wedding but to a considerably higher standard than I would have if I'd done an SDE.
I didn't say this video was bad at all, just that it could be improved. Isn't that what critiquing is all about? Every video can be improved on and you should always be questioning what you can do to make it better.

Vinny,

Its Lenny Levy, the cameraman who worked with you and Justin at Point Covallo last year.
I finally got my feet wet on the DSLR scene with a T2i and have been thinking of calling you anyway - so I have lots of questions. ( By the way I bought an indieslider after using yours.)

First off - The video is drop dead gorgeous - quibbles are totally minor - I can't believe you knock it out the same day.

So here are the questions:

How many cameras? - all DSLR's ? Do you prefer working with 5D's or are 7D and T2i OK for this kind for shoot also.

Lenses?

How do you break down the roles for each camera?

What kind of a steadicam are you using and what other movement gadgets do you typically bring - dolly? slider?

Do you worry about audio and the vows etc or is that "old fashioned" for a wedding video. Do you have to sell them on the idea of a "music video" type piece instead of a typical boring wedding vid.

Post - what was wrong with the FCP Pro Res LT method?

Oh yeah - you could answer this in an email if you like but I'm curious - what do you charge clients for this and how many people on the crew.

Lenny Levy

100% excellent post. Weddings are a beautiful thing, almost an area where it is hard to mess up. Being able to record, edit and put out material like this is a true inspiration to me and should be to everyone.!!

Instant gratification, I love that

Ditto!!

2 words: TRANSCODE TIME

What are you using that's faster? Even without factoring in the ease of interface and integration into workflow the plugin has been way faster than Compressor / Streamclip on my machine..

Edit: converting to ProRes 422

Double edit: I think the important thing to realize is that an SDE isn't about perfection, it's about timing. If it was a good wedding everyone should be too drunk to notice weak shots and awkward color by that point anyway :) If I was in the industry I would give them a SDE, then go in and tighten / re-grade and add a little bit more before posting online a week later so everyone can relive it all over again.

I too would love to hear why you didn't like the EOS Log & Transfer plugin?

Well there is a few reasons why I prefer not using it, at least for the projects that I do.. For doing a SDE its really really slow for converting/importing the footage. Stream clip is pretty much 2x's as fast.. Another reason why I prefer not using EOS is because I like to have the h264 compression on a drive for archiving purposes.. Takes up less space and I also double up all my project footage for protection.. So it's better to have a Prores folder and a h264..

thanks you for your input.. I really like to hear what people always have to say... but this edit was shot and cut in the same day.. it played at the couples wedding, I know some companies that will take a SDE home and fix it up a little but I like to show it as it was played during my clients wedding.

Totally agree with you.. that's what pushes me to make a better piece every time.. Each SDE has a different time frame for the turn around time this piece only had an hour and a half of editing time because our clients decided to bump up the edit an hour early.. Normally we include the vows..
