Saddest Scenes in Cinema

Slate recently had a poll asking what people thought was the saddest scenes in cinema since 1995. The top three scenes where from the films Armageddon, Ponette, and Up.

Seriously?

I mean I know it's an opinion poll and it's all relative, but do people really think the scene in Armageddon deserves to be in the top 3? What happened to the scene in Lion King when Simba's father dies, or Million Dollar Baby when Hilary Swank is about to die?

"Platoon" when Willam Dafoe's character gets gunned down with hands up in the air in slow motion. But that sadness quickly turned to anger...lol.

Champ ...wake up champ

Ricky Schroder ; damn I cried alot when I was kid . Still saw that movie ten times.

Plus a million for 'champ wake up champ'. My parents never stopped telling me about that movie. Saw it, lost my mind. Every other time I saw it for some reason I convince myself that I was probably dreaming the last time I saw it and the guy's gonna get up. And he don't. It gets me every time.

I dunno if this one is sad, but definitely one of the more moving scenes I've seen. Once Upon a Time in America, kid goes to the girl's house, carrying a cake for the girl so he can bang her. She's in the shower, and as he waits, the kid eats the cake. I forget each time I'm watching a bunch of kids, I literally forget they're kids, till he eats that cake. First time I saw that I thought, 'oh crap he's just a kid.' Cuts me up how he eats that cake.

Nearly every scene that Lucas revised in the original Star Wars. Greedo shooting first? So sad; it cuts me up every time to see it ruined.

But in truth that opening montage in 'Up' was pretty sad; I saw a lot of people with teary eyes during that sequence.

Yup....the all time saddest was "The Champ." That little Ricky Schroder played that role unbelievably well. If you didn't well up while watching that entire scene...then....your a vampire.

The final scenes in Artificial Intelligence when the AI create a virtual replica of David's house.

When the AI says, "Give him what he wants" I just tear up.

SPOILER ALERT

the last emporer, when pyui returns to the imperial city and 'his' throne as a common tourist. I tear up every time. Plus the following score is just amazing.

road to perdition when hanks confronts newman in the rain. i like when bill murray says 'do you think he remembers me?' in the life aquatic.

When Wade dies in Saving Private Ryan. I always find it pretty hard to watch.

The suicide scenes in Letters from Iwo Jima. Really, probably some of the most emotionally effective scenes I can think of.

*bugged

when jack nicholson is wheeled out at the end of 'one flew over the cuckoo's nest'
the end of easy rider, despite how fake looking the sequence is.
both of those films induce sadness and then anger

Of Mice and Men, George shoots Lenny.

Deer Hunter: The roulette game while captured as soldiers was very nerve racking and kept me clenching my chair armrest like I was on a rollercoaster, however when DeNiro returns to find Walken, who is now addicted to the game... that makes me tear up.

In Cold Blood: Broken Dreams
