GH5 S1H Users?

I am awaiting an S1 w/24-105mm, which will arrive by November 29th. I have my GH5s listed on this forum.

For the S1 owners/users, any info or insights on the S1 for those of us still using (and kinda envious) GH5 users?

It’s a great camera and worth getting if your budget allows. Everything you could want minus extra weight but not heavy compared to my EVA1 setup. I still use my 2 GH5 cameras as well. But whenever it’s one or two camera shoots I only use the S1/EVA combo.

I've been watching the S1H closely and it looks pretty awesome in a lot of ways. It's weird that it has more limitations than the GH5 though... hard to justify that when $1-2k cameras have fewer VFR and codec limitations etc.

If you like the GH5, you'll like the S1H. As for the S1, you will find some frustrations vs. the GH5 but the IQ may be worth it to you.

The S1H doesn't have more limitations than the GH5. The S1 does. The S1H has more codec and VFR options.

It's definitely an upgrade. But just be aware going from micro 4/3s to full frame, you're going to struggle pulling focus a bit more. GH5s was a lot easier with the smaller sensor. But it does have tools to help you know about your focus distance. 4K, dynamic range, and colors are definitely an improvement, including low light.

S1H only does 4k60 in 4:2:0 and cropped. Pretty sure the GH5 doesn't crop the sensor or lower sampling to do 60fps.

This is true, though the S1H does 10 bit in 4k 60, even though its 420. Vlog is not very usable on the GH5 in 8 bit. But that said the GH5 still packs a large punch even now IMHO, espiecally considering you can get one for $1000 or less used. (just picked one up for $625  )

As Dingo pointed out, the GH5 starts cropped to begin with.

I cannot see any quality loss on any S35 vs FF modes, and have not read that any exists. Lowlight and DR is also maintained. Actually, I just run the camera in S35 mode full time and only switch to FF mode if I need to go a bit wider. But, that's because I run a lot of slow motion and don't want to mentally switch between thinking in two different FOVs at same time. I also run EVA1 and GH5 with speedbooster, so keeping it in S35 makes all 3 of these cameras essentially operate with the same FOV.

I also can't see difference between s35 and FF I can see a difference between FF ir S35 and Pixel to Pixel in HD where the pixel to pixel is to be avoided especially in higher ISOs. im sure you will get cleanest results in very high iso in ff 6k.

in general its silly to make comparisons between the gh5 and the s1H.

basically its simple- is the S1H 'better" than the gh5 - the short answer is yes it is.
Do you need to upgrade to it- only if you are not happy with what you have.

You say it's silly to compare the two cameras, and then go on and compare them....

You should have stopped at the first line.

its very simple the S1H has better dynamic range, better color especially skin tones, Time code, 120 FPS in 10 bit 1080p better low light via dual Native ISO more frame rates and codexes white maintaining IBIS etc. which doesn't mean you NEED it if you are happy with the GH5 there are people who are simply shooting Natural PP don't care about frame rates, never use Time Code and never need top shoot beyond iso 1600- and have a vast m43 lens collection -These people will not benefit from switching.

But the S1H is better its that simple.

The only thing the GH5 beats the S1H in is rolling shutter. Otherwise the GH5 wins if you want a smaller or lighter system. The S1H is a huge camera, in the mirrorless realm that is.
