S1h Shutter dial- annoying

I use manual lenses so the lock works for me as I change f stop on the lens. But I agree there should be an option of individual control over one wheel at a time. And if someone at Panasonic is listening- the inability to lock the shutter while releasing the iris is what is stopping me from investing in lumix pro lenses. How’s that for motivation?

Yes I am going to follow this up with Panny. I contacted them and a little back and forth so far pointing me towards the manual ect.. so not getting to the right people yet but plan to follow up on this...If this is not possible through an upgrade I
will seriously think about selling it on...Really like image and everything else and I know some people will say for such a small thing that is a big jump to make but thats part of the frustration with this ..Thinking about it again I am starting to doubt whether it will be possible to change this via a firmware update...I mean surely if most people here are finding it a little bothersome I'm sure they would have got some feedback on this at development stage.;;also since this is the case on the gh5...
.I am not a technical person but if anyone has any ideas on why it would not be possible to customise these dials please feel free to chime in.

It is already possible to flip the dials and make the front one shutter speed and the rear dial aperture. And you can customize their function for photo shooting, including making shutter speed dial into a gain dial. Exactly what you want. So, if the camera can do those things already then obviously it means a firmware update could handle any other function they decided to allow you to program in video mode, such as gain. Really, it is just a matter allowing you to do something in the video mode that is already possible for photo mode.

While you are at it: I want to be able to assign a specific focal length in the image stabilization menue to to C1, C2, C3 to have for example C1: 35mm 25p, C2: 85mm 100p, C3 135mm 50p
I could do it with the gh5 and with the S1 but for some reason not with the S1H you can only set one focal length for all three. Unless I am missing som thing.

"ok tape....??? come on..." It's fast, cheap and effective. If you don't have big clumsy hands it's probably not an issue anyway.

Hi Mark...merely pointing out that your 'tape' solution is not a solution just an acceptance of a flaw that shouldn't be in the camera. Furthermore your willingness to apply tape to an obvious design problem is the reason that this type of problem exists in a camera. If companies know that their customers don't strive to have the best product possible they can deliver a substandard product safe in the knowledge that people will 'make do'.
Don't get the reference to big clumsy hands ...

On a camera that offers video as an extra sure let’s use tape but this one is made for video so make the shutter lockable

Yup, I started that thread and no have no problem with shutter changing. Good custom setup that you prefer and practice.

Small thing to deal with such a great little powerhouse of a camera. Still have not gone full manual lens, that was part of my plan, but with no work coming in I am just using the great Panasonic three lens.

Double handed on the camera, with grip strap helps a lot by keeping my thumb clear of SS.

I don't know how doable it is from a firmware perspective, however I would love if this camera had a "photo options gone" switch in the menus. A switch that removed anything to do with photo. I love the S1H, especially now Vlog is fully operational in V2 firmware but the menus are whack. Sure, it's nothing you can't learn, but even after doing so, I find them frustrating. Some things are just not where they are in a Panasonic Cinema Camera like EVA or Varicam. I love the home screen though.

To the OP, yep, I use lock, but agree if we could assign a function button just to lock the aperture as stand alone that would be useful I think.

I would actually pay to have all photo crap removed.
Take it all out and give me assignable dials and I’ll pay 200 on top

What exactly do you guys find so annoying about the photo features? I've had my S1H since December and have never taken a single photo, not even as a test, and I never intend to take a single photo. I've got my camera setup strictly for video and I don't even notice whatever photo-related features that are still visible. I can't imagine why they would be so annoying that someone would pay extra to have them removed. I don't get what the issue is?

I switch back and forth between photo and video all the time. Did it twice yesterday and find it easy, and nice to have the option. This is one of the many reasons I bought the camera. Lighten my load with only having to carry one camera for stills and video, which my clients want both.

I do agree the shutter not being able to lock in video is a problem, if I am not paying close attention to my screen. But that is less of a problem as I get more use to my setup.

Amazing little powerhouse of a camera, don't miss my FS7 MK2 at all.

"Sorry, I'd love to help you out by taking some photos but my S1H has been specially configured for video shooting only, and it would take quite a bit of time and effort to switch back and forth."

Got this reply from Panasonic with regard to shutter speed dial - I don't think they took the time to read through what I was saying as their answer doesn't really address the issue.

Thank you for your patience.

I am writing to inform you that our technical investigation in your case has concluded. Please find below the official answer from the technical department.

"As there is already a direct button on the top of the unit for ISO this would not be a software update to allow different means of accessing this function. "

We apologize for not being able to provide the answer you were hoping for. I hope the above will help clarify Panasonic's official position in the matter.

I trust that the above information will be of assistance to you.

However, of course, if you should have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.

..this is latest response...hopefully we will see it in update.

Thank you for your reply.

In response, I would like to thank you for taking the time to provide us with your very valuable feedback. Rest assured, it has been forwarded to the appropriate department to be taken into consideration for the future development of software/firmware updates, as well as for the design and manufacture of our future products.

I trust that the above information will be of assistance to you.

However, of course, if you should have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind Regards,

Max

I don't know what Panasonic does - but in corporate, in general, they have responses like that already 'copied and pasted' in the software they use.

All they do is press a hot-key or click a button, and it's their reply to you if nothing else needs to be said. (Even if has been forwarded...just saying.)

If one day customer service wakes up and has hundreds of thousands of the same requests worldwide...then you'll see a firmware update. Or if they are smaller companies that are in the business of directly working with filmmaking communities to improve/change their cameras like Blackmagic and RED.

Big companies rarely change things like this because it's not a problem in their eyes.
