GH5 S1H: Get a Weeklong S1H Rental for $99

You have a good point about the size of the S-series. They are large with the new lenses. I do not think the MFT and FF lines will affect each other in a negative way. If the GH6 came out with equal level specs /performance to the GH folks would gobble it up, maybe some S-Series folks as well. If the GH6 comes out with nothing special, I do not see those same GH owners running out and buying a S-Series camera. Imho, they are different enough to 'try hard' in each line.

With all due respect a lot of the comments here are absurd.
This camera is a full frame 14 stops of dynamic range dual ISO 4K 10bit 422 multi Framerate in body stabilized camera with one of the most flexible mounts on the market allowing the use of almost any lens that covers FF or super35.
It does all of those things without the need to add any further hardware. It’s an incredible bargain for what it does.
It is also approved by Netflix as a main production camera. There is really nothing like it on the market.

+1 Thank you.

Great camera and worth every penny. It is in my kit for two weeks and already earning its keep. Great job Panasonic, keep it up. I am a new customer moving over from Sony for this camera.

I know - I haven't stopped watching coverage since yesterday, so shocked - but I don't see that video he's talking about in that link.

https://nofilmschool.com/ 3rd from the top under the Sundance 2020 heading.

In any case, GH-6 is likely to be announced at CP+. And S1H is not selling as well as its nearest competitors A7 RIV, EOS R, Z6 and Z7. And 1D XIII is currently at the top of the charts. Panasonic has about 6% of the total market.

What lenses do you own ? Sony E mount ? Nikon Z lenses ? Canon R mount lenses ?

I own eight old Nikon AI-S FF lenses and bought a $20 L-mount adapter that works perfectly on Panasonic S cameras.

It seems that pretty much any lenses that cover FF and are not designed for mirrorless cameras can be used with the right adapter. ( you might have to deal with manual everything, but I'm ok with that )

I got some beautiful Canon FD glass for dirt cheap, and a $12 passive adapter off Amazon works fantastic with them!!

Frankly, I feel they left their MFT customer base in the cold by introducing a new line that has no transition capability whatsoever with their MFT customer base.

If they would have introduced a larger frame mount while still enabling, with an adapter, full video using MFT it would have given customers the ability to gradually transition to a larger frame and larger lenses.

I disagree with this wholeheartedly.

You think they are having a hard time now, imagine how bad it would be if they had to produce a whole new full frame lineup completely on their own just to bring over legacy m43 users gradually? The line would be all but dead if they only had 5 lenses a year later (based on Panasonic's OEM L mount lense production to date). The collaboration was smart for a number of reasons, and spreading the cost of production out while appealing to different aspects of the market was another. Heck, some might go up the chain and get a Leica body, just because it's a Leica.

Of course we want cheaper, but we also want it profitable enough so the corporation accountants don't get in the way and kill the line because it's a loss leader. Look what Samsung did and we are still waiting for a DSLM/DSLR to pack in some of the features that they had ten years ago! All that innovation didn't equate to the bottom line, so off with the NX's head!

I think they should not have dipped their toes in full-frame at all. They should have focused on MFT or go MFT+ with a clear backward compatibility story.

They'll never be able to significantly enter Nikon's and Canon's space for full-frame photography, just not going to happen! Even Sony with gazillion yens of resources still has to play the second violin in that space after how many years of trying?

And for video, well just my opinion, but full-frame is simply not necessary. I must be wrong and missed all the Oscars that are won with full-frame cameras.
And for hand-held cameras, full-frame is grossly impractical due to the large lenses.

Anyway, it seems most folks think the S series is the best since sliced bread (but do they actually have one or just cheerlead?) so I must be wrong. :)

This year 1917 and Joker are both nominated for Best Cinematography. Both shot on the Arri Alexa LF and Alexa Mini LF. "LF" = full frame.

The IBIS in my S1H surprised me. I didn't expect it to surpass the GH5. It delivers handheld that feels like it was shot with a heavy cinema camera rig. You truly need to shoot with it first-hand to appreciate what a great shooting experience it is. It's my first choice for all my run and gun doc work.

Very happy S1H owner here. And former GH5/GH5s owner. Will be buying a second S1H before the 3 year warranty offer ends. I also own a Z-Cam F6 (another 6K full frame compact cinema camera) that outperforms the S1H in some areas. While I don't need 6K, I'm 100% loving the option to shoot full-frame, or super 35 when I want, with these cameras. And also to take advantage of the full FOV and character of my Leica-R and Contax-Zeiss lenses.

Not sure why anyone would be opposed to Panasonic having both a MFT line-up and a FF line-up. You don't have to take a giant dump on something that doesn't appeal to you. It's okay to let people enjoy things.

If they offered this deal in Europe, I would def. try it out. I might try the S1 in the meantime.

I'll be renting one along with the Sigma EF adapter for testing in the future, and will report back once I do.

I'm looking to replace the 5DmkIII I sold last year, so I'm running down the full frame candidates.

That would simply be ignoring what our clients have asked us for. Why would we do that?

Yeah, I have zero beef with Panny trying a FF camera....

...Whether or not is makes sense business-wise is a different argument, one above my pay grade. That said, I don't think they're flying off the shelves, both because of the competition and the high price tag(s).... and the sticky-wicket that is autofocus.

I would say this though - without a doubt the development of their FF cameras have taken some pizzazz away from their MFT lineup, both in terms of resources available for developing new MFT products and consumer confidence in the MFT format as a whole.

Since the release of GH5s, there has been scant important releases or announcements from Panasonic regarding MFT, excepting for the 10-25mm f1.7 zoom... which I'm guessing began development before the company's push into FF.

And yes, that is a negative.

Each format has it's strengths and weaknesses, and it'd be very nice if Panasonic could keep both going. I think this year will be very important for Panasonic moving forward, so I'd expect similar promotions for their FF lineup and perhaps some aggressive pricing.

I am sure Panasonic listens to client feedback for their non-hand-held higher-end professional video cameras.
But my impression is that they never listen to the MFT clientele.

I don't know the balance between the revenue and profit picture with respect to the higher-end cameras and the MFT cameras.

Hmmm... In 2016 I asked for 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 every chance I got when Panasonic was asking for feedback. I even stated it as the ONLY FEATURE that I wanted and that 4K 10-bit alone would be enough to get me to upgrade my GH4 cameras.

And what do you know, in Spring 2017 Panasonic delivered a fantastic 4K 10-bit GH5 camera and I was extremely happy.

Today, I would like to see Panasonic deliver a MFT version of the S1H when the GH6 arrives. Better dynamic range, full V-LOG profile, more processing power. I'm hoping that something new arrives by Summer 2020.

Actually, there's a significant overlap in most of the camera blocks (sort of like BMW has its sporty 2-series that's also a Z4 and a Supra), so work on the higher end models can be passed down to the lower end too.

As to MFT, the GH series has long been on a "every three years" schedule and the 3rd year anniversary for GH-5 is just about now. Let's wait to CP+. Or, if not CP+, then PhotoKina Or, if not PhotoKina, then the NAB.

And, if not the NAB, just get Z6 with the external Prores Raw upgrade.

PS. Of course, every manufacturer listens to its customers ... unless the customer asks Canon for full readout CRL or Panasonic for auto-focus or Sony for anything in 10-bit. Then they clam up.

Ha, sad but true....

And yes, I'll be waiting up to NAB to see if Panasonic will continue to lead the way in the video world with the GH--- series. But if it's a camera with only minor upgrades - or worse, not announced at all - I think I'll be forced to start looking Canon's way again (something I'm loathe to do).

I love my GH5, but without some pretty big improvements in color science, dynamic range, and auto-focus, it will be my B-cam.

Unless of course there's a significant price reduction in the S series of cameras & lenses.
