S-Log2 / LUT / Adobe Premiere

When I last spoke(on this forum) with Dan (from C-D), they were trying to figure out how to access 4k from the camera and down convert it to one of their compressed codecs. They can't provide 4k, directly, per Sony, but, they may be able to provide a downconverted file. For example, if they can provide DNx220x, downconverted from 4k, rather than taken from the camera's 8-bit stream, then they can supply a 12-bit stream and record it to a 10-bit wrapper. That's really where I'm placing my hopes...

OK I think I'm now getting it, after researching the issue some more.

Apparently 2K RAW, whether normal or high frame rate, will suffer from pixel binning, which I understand leads to aliasing even at normal frame rates.

So CD is trying to work around this Sony downside by getting 4K stream and then downsizing it to either 2K or HD (alas up to 30p framerate), while getting NO pixel binning and no aliasing artifacts, hopefully. Is this understanding correct ?

I'm still playing with Slog2 and noticing some improvements. Slog2 is a LOT more sensitive to underexposure than overexposure. In post grading, bringing the luma values up introduces a ton of noise, macro-blocking, mostly due to hard clipping in the shadows. OTOH, exposing to the right of the histogram, and subsequently bringing luma down, will produce a very nice image....a little more DR. More effort than shooting Cinegamma4, but, a little nicer after some post processing work. All exposure corrections are done with curves, adding knees in the head and tail, plus a little gamma correction in the mid curves. And finally some saturation to enhance the color.Capture.jpg
