S-Log to SxS Music Video

Looks lovely! I really like those subtle colors and soft contrast, s-log is really delivering.

Some shots have very clipping whites- I don't like these. From 21 sec there is some strange hard line on light.
Overall it has this soft, organic look- cool!

Dope.

So, not to be stupid, but you shot S-Log to SxS? So, the xd-cam ex codec held up to grading okay?

Yep - S-Log (LUT) directly to SxS cards. If you use a LUT, you get most of the dynamic range (800%) without having to push the image around as much in post. For me a lot of what S-Log is about is the way it handles color. That's a flare at :21 added in post.

This flare looks odd- it has hard, straight edge. For me- look bad, but it's just my opinion.

I happen to like the flare, but I guess it is a personal thing. Great job on the video I love the color and the feel.

That looks amazing. Was a lot of that shot in 720 @ 60fps?
Also curious about the lenses used, flares looked like they came from a zoom lens?

Cheers,

BT

Do I have to upgrade my firmware to be able to do this? I have a big short film shoot in a few weeks I want to experiment with a few different shoot settings.

I have the latest 1.3 or whatever. I think you need this to record a LUT. Might as well get the latest.

The best cinematography I've seen on this site for several months. AMAZING! Kudos. That dynamic range makes me want to own the F3! (I know that there is much more going on here than the camera....like....the person behind it!) :) Cheers!

I watched this on Vimeo and really admired it. As an F3 owner, I've been underwhelmed by its look - both what I've seen online and what I've outputted myself - and have played around with PP settings and grading. But there have been some work such as this and Nate Weaver's music clips that look unreal. So well done. And your other work on your website was awesome, especially the doco on the mining town.

Do you grade inhouse? With what gear/software?

slog to cards....I had a feening that was very doable.....Looks really good.

I think we need to see a testy test slog to cards and slog to 422 and 444 recorders I vote AY !!!!

That look's great. Could you please tell me what LUT you used for recording the image directly to the cards please?

Thanks in advance..

Hello again, just interested in your set up. I presume you have you selected LUT enabled (which LUT did you select for this clip?), and are viewing through a monitor from SDI out, and just recording the LUT onto the cards. Do the camera automatically record the LUT'ted picture onto the internal cards? Thanks so much, struggling a little with S-LOG and this seems like a good idea. Sparky

So yeah I had a LUT enabled. I shot the Music Video in HG8009G33 I think. Recently Shot this with the REC 709 LUT as well and worked fine:
I think recording SLOG to cards without a LUT would give you a bit of challenge in post.
Thanks,
Pete
