F3: S-LOG on F3 and other issues..URGENT HELP!!

Hi all,

Rented an F3 which has version 1.45 installed on it.

I can not select the S-LOG function currently, any help on activating it? Shooting tomorrow and need help activating it!

I have a Atomos Samurai attached to it as well, which I wanted to record the S-LOG RAW files to. Which settings do I chose for that, currently I can only choose: 1.5G YPBPR422 & Video

Do I need both SDI cables in HD-SDI A & B or can I use just A?

Any help would be great! thanks!

You need to create a profile and attribute it to SLOG, you can then rename the profile the same as well.
If you are using only the downloaded version of SLOG, you can only use A.
A+B are for RGB paid upgrade.

Thanks for the help!

When I go into the profile menus, under matrix select, I don't have options for Slog, and just standard, cinema, and fl light.

Does this mean that slog isn't loaded onto the camera?

Thanks in advance advance.

Ok, well thanks for this. We've got slog set in gamma now, and but the video set options in the menu are all still unselectable

Does this mean we don't have the payed upgrade? Would we still be recording slog onto hdsdi and sxs?

Yes, if you've got S-Log gamma selected then you can record it on SxS or through the SDI outputs. It's debatable whether it's worth it onto 8-bit SxS, but definitely worth doing at 10-bit onto your Samurai. The only thing you're missing with the paid upgrade is the 4:4:4 RGB option and monitor LUT's for displaying a confidence picture for clients. You'll know when S-Log is properly selected because of the "milky" flat looking picture from all outputs.

Seriously. Do yourself a favor and install the Abel profiles.

Download the two profiles and you will see some significant improvements to your image.

Thanks for that, that video is really helpful in understanding exactly where to turn the S-LOG on! Cheers!

What I did want to know was why there was only one output option for the camera though. We recorded onto a Samurai externally, but not sure if the S-LOG did. The Dual Link & Gamma option was: YGB(something or rather...) & Video? None of the other external outputs were available!?!

There was no LUT options either.

Also, is there any way of viewing the 50 fps at a normal 25fps on playback, I believe it is possible to, but not sure how!?

Is there any other graphs etc for colour or exposure other than the histogram?

Thanks for the help all!! really made my life easier!

As Paul pointed out a couple posts back, you only get LUT options if you have the paid RGB upgrade.

With dual link enabled in 1.5G you can use SDI port A, but you can also use the SDI monitor out.

The only two other exposure tools on the F3 are zebra stripes and a handy spot meter.

You can playback overcranked footage if shot on sxs card, but pretty sure your samurai will not record 50p even if 720p.

Thanks Paul.

Just on the back of that:

- Understand about the Dual Link, but does that mean I did record the S-LOG to the samurai or not?

- Spot meter is what I was looking for, but couldn't find. To help work out my Grey balance. Any ideas where it is?

- We filmed recorded the overcranked stuff onto the sxs card and played it back. Only it played back at 50fps so did not appear slow. I heard it can playback at 25fps if you record at 50fps!?!?!
I believe the Samurai will record it, but only at 50i not progressive.

Thanks!

What ever your gamma was set to for the picture profile you were using, is what you would have recorded to your Samurai - hopefully you had the picture profile enabled with the slog gamma already configured in it. If you downloaded the AB slog profile you will be good. If you make your own slog picture profile you should also turn off matrix, detail and aperture to really match the original "paid" RGB SLOG key.

Spot meter is a button just above the outside of the LCD. You might have to enable it under the VF menu. You will see a square in the middle of your F3 screen with a percentage readout. You can use this to check your grey and 90% white reflectance levels.

When you recorded overcranked, did you use the S&Q function or did you switch the system mode of the camera? Once you switch back the camera to 25p and play the clips it should be slow mo if they were recorder at 50p.

I had the S-LOG turned on via the Gamma. Only was not aware of those extra details (turning matrix off etc) at the time. I did have it set to Standard, but on S-LOG. It was prettier for the director though.

Will have to look for that spot meter next time I rent the camera! thanks!

I believe we changes the S&Q to 50fps 1280p in the menu settings. Then when the S&Q was activated, we dialled in 25/50 and 50/50. But neither played back slow speed?!?!

Cheers

I really hate to say this but didn't your rental house assist with any camera set up? Even as an individual owner/operator, whenever I rent my F3 I go through the camera with the operator, set it up and provide the manual. Something else I might add as hopefully a lesson is whenever possible, try to learn a bit about a camera before shooting with it.

Yes. If shooting SLog via a PP, turn off matrix. As a rule of thumb, I always turn off detail and aperture on F3, F5 and F55. The Abel SLog PP's have been carefully developed to optimize settings. But emulation of the paid SLog is accomplished by turning everything off as Dennis has indicated.

Well, I did research, lots of it!, and spent a few hours the day before playing around with it. But as StarCentral below mentions, its a tad confusing as there are 2 types of S-LOG!

Yes that link was the one I should have watched before the job! Thanks

Any notes or comments from anyone about the playback for slow-motion? I mentioned above what I did, with no avail.

If you shot with the 1280 setting that is 720p (1280x720) not 1280p. Did you shoot 1080p (1920x1080) 25p for regular footage non-cranked and then switch to 720p mode ONLY for slo-mo? It actually sounds like you shot in 720p mode the whole time and used 25/50 for slow mo, but 50/50 for regular. I would have shot 25p straight in 1080p mode and only switched to 720p mode for the slow mo stuff.

My footage always played back in slo-motion in-camera so the best thing for you to do is drop your footage onto 25p timeline and you will know for sure.

Just to go over what I did:

I had the F3 always set to 1920x1080 for recording normal speed. 25fps.

In the menu settings I made the option for the S&Q to be 1280x720 50fps. Then when I turned on the S&Q with the side button, I dialled in 50fps and then also tried the lowest 17fps. The 17fps was really fast on playback, which makes sense. But the 50fps was not slow on playback!?!

Am I doing anything wrong??

Sounds correct what you did about switching from 1920x1080 25p and then 720p 50fps for slow mo.

I no longer have the F3, but I believe that your playback will always be relative to the time base your camera is currently in. So while the camera is in 50p mode, then 50p will play normal. You'd need to switch to a 25p based system setting in the camera and then the 50p footage would play twice as slow.

Check your clips on a timeline, should be ok.
