Rust

Alec Baldwin will play Alec Baldwin. The charges will be dropped. The judge and district attorney will be in the movie and get executive producer credits.

Can we run a poll or a sweep stake n this forum? Looks like we are going to need one :-)

I once sat in a bar/restaurant on Pico, not far from Gloria Allred. Naturally, she was dressed in all red. Early 1990's.

In the article it says "ALEC BALDWIN SUED IN ‘RUST’ SHOOTING: HALYNA HUTCHINS' FAMILY SAYS ‘TO LEAVE THIS UNPUNISHED IS UNALLOWABLE’’" they are looking for some one te be "punished" (revenge?) rather than justice.

This is an accident no one wanted to happen. There is no suggestio that anyone wanted anyone shot* So working out exactly how it happened and how to stop it happening again is, I would have though, more important that jail time?

In any case I think those in the frame have lost a vast amount of money through Rust not being finished and other loss of earnings. Along with not being able to work since the event untill the end of the trial. A time that may end up being longer than any jail term they wrould get. Also the traumatic effect on the people concerned is going to leave an indelable mark. I don't thionk jail time will have any more effect on them than they have already had.

*Ok some one is going to write a psychcological, susspence, thriller that some one was having an affair and some one wnated one of the peopel involvewd killed, Or it was revenge for something the armourers father did 50 years ago, Or.... make up your own conveluted plot.

Welcome to why Americans hate lawyers. This type of lawsuit is a civil lawsuit that is about money, not jail time. Note that this suit comes out over a year after the fact and just after the charges were filed. One might guess that the situation was evaluated all this time and just recently determined there is a big pot of money to be made, and then lawyers came to the family with offers. It shows just how awful the American civil court system is.

To quote Churchill "Its the least worst system we have" :-)
I am not sure there is a perfect system anywhere.
Though as is being discussed elsewhere re RED and patents the US systems do seem to be in need of some maintenance and adjuctment.

I have to say that if it was my family involved I would sue the producers and any body else involved back to the Stone Age.

The only way accidents like this will be stopped is if the producers know they will face the consequences, be it financial or incarceration.

that also applies to the relevant crew who hold the safety of the rest of the crew in their hands.

Your approach ensures that everyone is defensive and tires to shift the blame from the start. It rarely gets to the truth of the matter nor does it fix things.
Normally that approach is counter productive.

what it does do is encourage crew to speak up if they encounter a dangerous situation knowing they will be held accountable if they don't.

it happened in this case but the warnings were ignored by the producers at a great cost.

I withdraw the previous question with apologies.

to be honest I am just angry that every few months I have to wake up to the news of another film crew member being killed on set.

with the usual grieving, hand wringing and hair pulling with blame being thrown around but it all gets forgotten and then it happens again.

no film is worth dying for....

I have been on film sets since the early seventies and early on some questionable practices occurred but I can say that if I saw something
dangerous to cast and crewI have always called it out.

well what would your plan be to stop people being killed on film sets....

The same methods that is used for other industries. though that requires that people don't start suing. The minute that happens everyone ties to prove their innocence or lessen their guilt. Drawbridges come up. The truth is never uncovered. Though I am talking about investigations in Europe which have a very different legal system.

In aerospace there is CONDOR Reporting that is a report on an incidents to explain what happened, what lead up to it, what the failures were and how they can be rectified. However no one gets sued or charged with anything unless it was clear wilful negligence.

In disaster in the UK with many deaths it was multiple systematic things over several decades. So rather than prosecute the whole lot is likely to be free from prosecution so that all the truth comes out and all the problems can be fixed. Otherwise everyone, in US parlance, "Pleads the Fifth" and you get nowhere.

However if Baldwin and others are being sued they are going to protect themselves first and blame others second and to hell with the truth.
Then you end up with the wrong laws to stop something that didn't happen in the way the law is stopping things. Seen it many times before.
