GH3 Running Final Cut 6.03... Should I be able to edit GH3 AVC ALL-Intra 72?

I just imported some new GH3 72 mbps footage and on playback in my FCP 6.03, it's choking up a lot. Plays, but is jumping frames, stuttering etc... I know, I could get a newer version but this one has always worked for me and if I can use it, I will. Is this a question of an incompatibility with my version or is it just not handling the size of the file well. Any guesses? I can certainly speed up my system if it should work with this version.

Outside of FCPX, you have to transcode any and all H.264/AVCHD footage to ProRes if you want to work with it.

Ok. Thanks. Yeah, you're right. I've been doing this with VoltaicHD with my AVCHD GH1 files. Just tried it with the GH3 ALL Intra and it transcoded it super quick. VoltaichD uses Apple Intermediate Codec and not Prores. I notice it took the file from 71,729 bit rate to 69,474 but I suppose this is no great loss in quality, is it?

Just stick with Prores 422.

But why not just buy FCPX? Hell, even in FCPX is still transcode, especially for big projects. It just smoothens up the whole pipeline....

Quick question Dustylense, what is the main advantage of upgrading to FCPX?
I have used FCP 6-7 for about 3 years and I am very comfortable with it. I tried a demo of FCPX and the workflow is just different for what I normally do (Music Videos). Any tips or suggestions for why I should go with FCPX? I know FCP7 is basically on it's last legs, but many pros I work with still use it.

Thanks

Because you can cut faster. Forget all the grading and even plug-ins or transitions. FCPX as an editor is just fluid. You can take your edit back to 7 and finish. But first draft cutting is so butter in FCPX.

I'll second the advantages of FCPX. And it just keeps getting better.

Personally, because I have a Matrox MXO set up that finally works properly (don't ask) and I'm paranoid of messing with it.

That's something to consider. I'd also download the free trial and play with it if you feel like spending $200 (plus more if you want Compressor/Motion, or any of the numerous add-ons that are out there for different pieces of functionality).

I find the magnetic timeline to be the biggest downside. It's great when it works for you, not so much when it works against you. Which has been about 50/50 in my experience.

If you're happy with FCP6, outside of having to transcode, I really see no reason to switch at this point. FCPX will save you time in the beginning since you don't have to transcode, but after that I find the speed advantages of actually editing to be slightly dubious.

The magnetic timeline works against you??? HOW? It's brilliant! Then, PRESS P to turn it off, A to turn it on. SO easy...

Apart from the 64-bit code/performance enhancements, the magnetic timeline is the best feature of FCPX by far. That being said, it does have a learning curve to unlock its full potential (as with most of X). But once you've figured it all out, there's simply no going back to the extremely dated environment of FCP 6/7.

For $300, there's really no reason not to take the dive into X at this point. Those initial bugs and missing features many editors were worried about initially have almost entirely been worked out.

Except when it breaks sync when you try to replace a clip, regardless of which mode you're in.
There are 4 options to replace a clip. Sorry Gary, but you're just wrong wrong wrong. Try using "replace from start" or Replace from finish". I've been editing on FCPX since launch and I'm not experiencing what you are trying to state. Take some online training. Ripple is a good place to start.

Probably because you're not editing the kind of stuff I am in it.

Spend the couple hundred dollars on it for me and I promise I'll watch it.

Okay, let's move on everyone.

For the life of me, help the OP with his issue, and leave the sniping about FCP X, either for or against, to your own thread, PM, or email.

Thank you for your holiday season cooperation with my request.
