(Rumored) Panasonic FF mirrorless

I dunno if I fully agree with this... a lot of the GH5 look was also originally due to Panasonic trying to maximize IQ on an "under sized" sensor (which is becoming an outdated thought with the newest advancements). BMD has shown the m43 sensor needn't incur the additional digital processing to put out a killer image. I am also wondering if part of the Sep 25 announcement with the "major" firmware updated to GHx line might address some of this - a more RAW mode (whether that's a RAW type codec, or a more raw/stripped down profile). The images will speak but I can't imagine the FF mirrorless won't have improved iQ.

As for form factor, it's true, but I think my point was that those who prefer the EVA1 form factor are becoming an increasing minority. For solo shooters or small teams, myself included, the DSLR form factor with a few proper kitting options (which I prefer as it keeps things modular) not only works equally well, I find it is often superior.

Yes, but, no other mirrorless FF mount is actually doing it or making it possible. And panasonic is in a unique position to build in the software to pass through electronic data from MFT lenses if they choose... possibly even including DUAL IS. Will they? Don't know. But the thought that they could...

But as well, YES, to an open mount system with short flange difference - would be superb.

Yes and the Pocket 4k proves that sensor size is not needed to make a camera amazing. There are many ways to optimize how a sensor is used to capture video.

Those that buy a EVA1 also want a camera designed strictly for video. Buying a FF DSLR means also getting all the stills related functionality which not everybody needs.

We know the market for a larger form factor is in the minority but that has always been true and why the DSLR video revolution was so lucrative. I used to use ENG DVCAM cameras and yet their market share greatly paled compared to the DV camera sales. It’s partially why those cameras cost so much, the R&D has to be recouped somehow because they cannot expect those numbers to come back via volume sales. That’s been the case of larger cameras since the dawn of cameras. And yet each year we get new larger cameras and they do sell and companies continue to make them so the market is there.

I am at the stage now where a DSLR does do it for me so I’m also now out of the EVA1 market. I also shoot stills which is another reason why a video only camera no longer makes sense for me.

Yeah I hear ya. I’m seeing through my own glasses here of course but as owner and user of EVA1 and GH5 and GH5s. The GHx ergos, buttons, controls, UI all beat the EVA1 and with IBIS on this FF it’s going to take a lot of IQ to save the EVA1. I say that not with glee given how I’m a good chunk of change invested - I just can only imagine a very small subset of users who for any reason will prefer the EVA1 body and not be working on a set calling for an arri or red.

I’m sure I’m wrong on something there but my main point is everyone points to the EVA1 pro as form factor even though I’m increasingly see it as a con.

I have to agree. It is going to get tougher and tougher to justify the EVA-1's of the world going forward unless you need something it offers.

Looks like these particular models aren't going to immediately change anything on the video end of the spectrum. To the folks questioning the ability to justify an Eva1 over DSLRs moving forward, I must say, I disagree. A long time proponent of the DSLR-for-videoo on purpose, not just because of price, I finally caved and got an Eva1 this year, and I think it is beyond worth it. In many subtle ways, including IQ, it trumps the GH5 which I still love and use as a B cam. Perhaps I've just drunk the Kool-aid, but I get the 'real camera' thing, now.

The 24MP should allow for a 4K 1:1 s35mm crop mode which would be great for adapting PL mount lenses.
Hoping for some non-16:9/17:9 modes for anamorphic lenses too (in both FF and crop).

Until DSLR-style cameras start coming with real built-in NDs I think there's plenty of room in the world for the EVA1s and FS5s of the world. Especially amongst the run and gun documentary style shooters.

HDMI latency is just one of the many reason to choose a dedicated motion camera over a DSLR or MILC.

I use both systems but if forced to choose one it be the dedicated system equipped with SDI outputs.

That Leica Vario-summilux looks like a really nice lens, but I suspect the price tag will be above $2500.
Yes, will probably have a steep price. Notice the manual aperture ring, and that they mention that it will be stepless aperture...

For sure...many of the modern systems I have used have barely any noticeable latency. Sometimes it's the monitor and not the camera too!

Announcement was basically confirmation of the rumors, so glad to see them hold, but also lacking any real answers to questions:

What is the codec, specifically at 4k60p? 10-bit?
Max FPS in VFR, output recording options?
Variable Scan Mapping for S35? For M43 (maybe only on the 48mp model)?

Etc.

Hoping there's some good hands on time on the show floor with Q&A but I'm sure they are also saving/hiding/still figuring out those final specs.

That said I can't imagine this not being a must own as a Panasonic invested user. FF with Dual IS is insta-buy. Adapt some vintage glass on there and turn this into a run'n'gun workhorse.

The real question becomes, will M43 truly have a place after this, other than being cheaper?

"The cameras will use a high-speed, high-precision hybrid contrast detection autofocus. Panasonic says the S series also uses deep learning artificial intelligence in the autofocus system, but didn’t go into further detail about how that technology works and what it means for the camera’s performance."

AI is under heavy research and development by almost every single company in the world...it will eventually make it into prosumer cameras and they will recognize what you are pointing them at like the "Terminator" vision...human - tree - building - cat - dog - food - and so on.
