Rumor: Sony A7s will have 4K video

Come on guys, lets be realistic. How can the A7s be priced lower than the RX1? It's a premium niche product with the world's most sensitive sensor, designed to showcase Sony's best technology. They only want to sell a few of them, to help build Sony's brand. This is not a mass market product and they aren't going to price it that way.

And this could be the way to look at it too. If the a7s with video is as bada$$ as the RX1 is with stills, maybe. I still think the smaller resolution fro stills hurts though, because people wanting "just" a video camera will simply buy a video camera.

I would even be very happy with an APS-C NEX-7 with decent 4k.

If there's an a7000 with slog-2 and xavc, creating 1080p images with full sensor readout, then that's the one I want. No need for 4K for me, and I already have a speedbooster. (in fact, make that 10-bit xavc and it's basically my dream camera) (edit: please add IBIS too; and sell it all for well under $2K; thanks)

Also, regarding the price comparison with the RX1: not really a competing product since it's fixed-lens and incredibly small. In any case, it does come with a lens that would cost you $1K on the a7s, so yes, $1800 and they're basically the same. Unlikely if you ask me.

Im probably to get disapointed but i feel more exited about this camera than what i could see for the GH4, even if it's an excellent bargain... Just something i didn't like about the gh4 image so far, am i alone to feel the same?

No I feel the same. A full fram EVIL with excellent (presumably) 50mbps 1080p video Is more exiting to me than the GH4. Direct footage from the GH4 doesn't look right, but given the right settings and post workflow (particularly if using an external recorder) should be able to provide excellent results. But most of the videos we see will get it wrong. You have to shoot 4k on the GH4 too, as the 1080p modes are rubbish.

I think when all is settled I'll prefer the a7s to the GH4, probably because of the DR. But man, that GH4 thing sure is SHARP!!

Only a decade after when the venerable F900 and 2nd generation F900R (series built upon on 1080p @ only 3:1:1 !) ruled for 100x the price!! :-)

If the MK3 couldn't shoot raw & there was no A7s I'd be excited about the GH4 because it would be the only high resolution 12ish stop DSLR around. The A7s footage I've seen blitzes the GH4 in dynamic range and the low light capability is just incredible. The option of shooting full frame or S35 is very cool.

Emanuel, it took me a long time to trade out all those expenses of production/post production equipment of that era. I totally get the 100x price reference that was on my shoulders. Amazing tech today. Regards,

GH4 seems to have marginally better DR than the GH3. It's probably not close to 12 usable stops while the A7s might be much better if the Slog implementation is any good. I think that'll be a significant factor in all this.

Christopher, I was in the same boat as you, hence my WOW nowadays. No shame to open the mouth every amateur cam (by the way and now to the naysayers, the most recent mirrorless offer) comes out.

Regards,

Emanuel :-)

I often wonder if the the ROI being one job today introduces a different attitude toward the craft than when the ROI took many dozen jobs to break even.

Emanuel, it will be interesting to see how the a7S WOW factor emerges in future iterations of Sony Professional, such as something like an F55S or F5S. The a7S, my jaw dropped. I am hoping 'enough ducks line' up when we learn more and see other footage, in due course.

philiplipetz, a good, yet tricky question. I am still trying to figure the business out, one job at a time.

http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-...0m3-price-2295-and-849-euro-shipment-in-july/

"A7s: And right now the official Sony Luxemburg store has listed the final A7s price which is set at 2295 Euro! Shipment will be late July! The same store sets the price of the A7r at 1899 Euro. That makes the A7s 20% more expensive. We can speculate the price in US to be 20% higher than the A7r too ($2295 here at Amazon). It would mean the A7s could price could be around $2750."

I just came here to write about the same SAR post :)

In the official Luxembourg store, the a7r has an official price of 2099eur, and has a 10%-off offer right now. The leaked a7s price is 9% higher than the a7r official price, and 21% higher than the a7r on-offer price.
With a US price of $2299 for the a7r, that puts the a7s between $2500 and $2800. And $2500 would probably be the most likely one.

and exactly how bad the rolling shutter is in each shooting mode...

but now I (nearly) know that if I don't buy one it won't be because of the price
