Rumor: Sony A7s will have 4K video

I just came here to write about the same SAR post :)

In the official Luxembourg store, the a7r has an official price of 2099eur, and has a 10%-off offer right now. The leaked a7s price is 9% higher than the a7r official price, and 21% higher than the a7r on-offer price.
With a US price of $2299 for the a7r, that puts the a7s between $2500 and $2800. And $2500 would probably be the most likely one.

If that's correct it'll come in at around £2000 + VAT which makes it £2400 which is just shy of the what the dealers have been quoting £2500.

I'm assuming that VAT is to be added to those figures.

Im interested in this camera. Seriously. Now if i were Sony, i will really speed up to release some great promo video if the camera ias as good as it is. Because in this price range and market, GH4 looks like is actually selling like pancake...

Sony has always been terrible to promote their cam. I don't know how they could spend millions on one side and make no effort on this other side.. Words of mouth usually has the final words but indeed in ths industry, there are many example of great example who haven't take off just because of this kind of reasons...

To me the GH4 and the A7s are two different cameras. I have the GH4 and, while I like what it does, the DR is not what the A7s will be for my work. Sony builds good cameras IMO. I just wish they would release the A7s.

To hold me over until the A7S is released, I bought a GH4.

I was actually very surprised at the highlight rolloff & DR it produces:

Hey Nirv, long time..

We should find out tomorrow. But £2400 is too much for this. I'm looking for a new stills so the A7 looks a better bet. I haven't been through the rest of this thread but IMHO

- 8 bit slog is problematic
- rolling shutter seem worse than usual
- 8 bit 4K is odd as well
(the RAW in these cameras is technically 8 bit too, but has a better compression scheme)

The DR will be the same as the rest no doubt, but stuffing that DR into 8 bit slog isn't making the best of it - bearing in mind the blacks are raised (loose 10% of your 8 bit immediately) and the highlight compression takes up a fair amount of space, so your usable range is more limited.

If Sony had made allowances for 10bit out at this price point then i would be more interested.

And of course have they sorted out the issue that affects the other models? Smearing flare in the A7 and shutter vibration (not so important) in the A7r. And whether it suffers the same range of issues with various wide angle lenses?

I hope i'm wrong, but sometimes what seems like a huge leap is quite incremental...

cheers
Paul

Nice video. I saw this earlier...looked like a long commercial. Reminded me of the sample Sony A7s promo. DR looked good. Didn't you just sell off your BMPC 4K camera? I was this far on purchasing it and picking it up directly from you in Orlando. But videos like these keep pushing me towards the GH-4.

The question now is whether the A7s is worth $800 more than the GH4. DR is important of course, and one can expect the A7s to be substantially better than the GH4 (2-3 stops?), but for me, what's interesting is just how much better is the A7s going to be in low light - how high can I go in ISO and get noise-free footage compared to the GH4... from my understanding the GH4 (correct me if I'm wrong!) is very poor in low light.

GH4 isn't terrible in low light, it's just not amazing. The A7s is amazing. I think it's 800 bucks better, in the end. The DR alone is what sets it apart, that and Slog.

My feeling is that both cameras will have there place each with the strengths and weakness, In my case the G4 is more in line with my needs , for 1, the A7s needs an external drive to record $k where as the g4 not , the money I would need to spend on a external drive, I would rather use that money towards a new lens or even the grip on the G4.

I would say it's a lot more than $800 better. This thing looks to be a C100 crusher in low light.

I am so overly perfect!

And I am SO HAPPY you were right...
I thought it would be $3K, but was afraid it could be even higher.
But it took them so long that I'm sure I can find a quote in this thread where I say I think it's going to be $2500... or nearly any other number :)

This will be my first preorder of a camera.

15.3 Stops of Dynamic range - if that is true for S-log video then it will be one crazy camera!!!!!!!The kind of camera one waits to own for a lifetime. But how???????? Doesn't 8 bit make it a little harder to get all the stops? Is that for stills mode? Honest question. Price seems right if you consider the breakthrough performance. Highest sensitivity and class leading dynamic range - just the rolling shutter that has a question mark. I guess if you are careful in moving the camera it is not a deal breaker - worth putting it on a slider or tripod for the image quality. Ohh and avoid filming trains from 1 meter away

Yeah, especially depending on how good the 1080p looks on it. If it does great HD, and the 4K is something you can grow into later once you have the infrastructure for editing those kinds of data rates, then it's great competition for the C100.

...My feeling is that we are finally approaching the end game for DSLR video, where DSLR cameras will be able to produce the same type of image that only $15K+ cameras can produce, and I think much of it comes down to new sensor tech and having enough processing power in-camera to handle the amount of data involved.

Panasonic appears to be a little behind Sony in sensor technology, but I fully expect them to catch up by next year ( i.e. Varicams with organic sensors will be out this Fall ) and that the next generation of GHx cameras will have a similar DR. ( 14 stops seems to be the magic number when it comes to producing a film-like image )

All very cool indeed...
