Rumor: Sony A7s will have 4K video

Dont forget the A7S also has Cinegammas like the FS700, and those are incredibly gradable for 8-bit.

I think more shooters will shoot in Cinegamma than slog2 just to prevent the signal from falling apart.

Sensor readout is always 4k in 4k and 1080p so heat cannot possibly be the issue . Perhaps the electronics with regards to the DSP required to process 4k? But not the sensor or am I mistaken?

Again, not the official price: just what you have to pay if you really really want to be the first one to get one, and don't have friends at Sony. Some small shops usually do this kind of thing.

$2800 maybe? With the Shogun a bit of change from $5k would be nice. That said, will the Shogun be $2k in oz, or is that just usd? How are you feeling about Ted's price?

Sam - Ted's are big here, but admittedly often 10% more than the competition.

Me: right now I think I would pay up to $3000, but looking at the a7r price I think this one should be $2500 at most. Plus I still need to be sure about DR, RS, etc.

Ted's pricing, compared with BH:
* GH3: 1100 AUD vs 1100 USD (ratio 1.0x) (mature product, on its way out)
* D800: 3200 AUD vs 2800 USD (ratio 1.14x) (mature product, still hot)
* a7r: 2500 AUD vs 2300 USD (ratio 1.087x) (hot product but already in stock and selling for a few months)
* GH4: 1750 AUD vs 1700 USD (ratio 1.03x) (new product with known official price)
* a7s: 3500 AUD vs... 3100-3200 USD?? (my guess, looking at the other prices)

I still think it will be $3000 or less.

Yeah, the signal processing generated too much additional heat to deal with in such a tiny body. I would have been much happier with a larger body and internal 4k, but that's just me. Still, I'm mighty impressed they managed to get a 4k read out from a full frame sensor with just passive cooling.

So it's not the sensor itself making heat. It's the processor handling all the data. Does that mean that technically, if the camera could just spit out uncompressed video via hdmi or raw data, that the readout speed could be increased?

The sensor also generates heat. But the processor can generate a lot more.

It's never as simple as "throw out uncompressed RAW and the sensor can work a lot faster". There's usually a limit in the sensor itself (among other things because it faces a lot more difficulty dissipating that heat, since you can't put a heatsink directly on top of it).

Steve, AUD$2800 would probably work for me too. I have asked Atomos to add 2x anamorphic de-squeeze live view on the Shogun. It is now on their 'to do list', however, I don't expect the feature to be added any time soon, if at all. The A7s and Shogun combo to record 4K for 2K anamorphic finish is currently a dream. Shogun pricing not likely to be AUD$2000. Need to see more test footage and user feedback.

Thanks for the comparison, Samuel. i'll wait a few months after the release, let the dust settle.

The UK doesn't fare too well either, unfortunately. Whatever the price ends up being, over here we'll feel we're being ripped off!

The sensor generates loads of heat too. I think you have described exactly what is happening here, when you hook up HDMI the camera spews out the data instead of crunching it internally, which gives a bit more thermal headroom, allowing 4k to be read from the sensor.

Australian prices are usually at least 20% more than US prices.

US prices generally are stated without sales tax. In the UK we get used to seeing price including VAT which distorts the picture somewhat but even so we still end up paying more that the US.

I think there are peculiar taxes in the EU region for video recording devices and cameras, I'm pretty sure this was why the Canon DSLRs only recorded up to 30 mins to beat the duty rather than a technical limitation.
