Rumor: Sony A7s will have 4K video

so a7s doesn't output 10bit through hdmi, but maybe new atomos ninja star with prores hq (also 422 and lt) still will be better than internal xavc?

LOL...so many overstatements in this thread. the image is nice and clean...like I would expect from Sony. But...for example...the image from inside the boat...was very contrast(y) to start off with. It looked...um...bad. then all of a sudden...bam...everything inside the boat and outside could be see. That does not tell me much. It just shows a high contrast image flattened out. A lot of cameras with normal shooting have a contrast(y) image. But not like that. But it looks impressive from one extreme to the other. Let's just wait until we find out what the REAL dynamic range of this camera is before overstating it. LOL I want to see a less clinical look to this camera and a more////cinematic look myself. Trust me...I like it...but....

Indeed.
I need confirmation of price and DR, then I can preorder.

The internal codec is 420 but is very strong (AFAIK, it's the same codec of the F55, but with half the bitrate, no 4096, and with mp4 wrapper instead of mxf).
I would expect that the difference is about the same as what you get with the C100 recording internally or externally. Maybe even less difference, since the C100 records at just 24 Mbps.
Unless you go for a 4K recorder, of course.

both, and there's a $800 breakout box with XLR

Is there a way to mount eos lenses (Leitax eos hard mounted on Leica r) rock solidly?
Or, though minimal, some degree of play/rotation is inevitable?

It depends on your expectations, and on how you support your camera.
I have a metabones adapter, and I would consider it rock solid. But it seems that, if you look hard enough, you'll find issues with it too (here).
Regarding support: for big lenses, just attach the lens to the tripod and think of the camera as a lens cap that records images :)

Now, to the lucky people visiting NAB: please check rolling shutter, both in 1080p and 4K mode, if possible. Thanks!

Yes. If it is like the C100 then there are only minor advantages to external HD recording, times when the codec is extremely stressed or when a stressful grade was anticipated. It was almost the same with the FS100, our team owned both. However, the bit rate and codec of the 7s is different so it may be even more optimized.

A7s will have a recording path to Odyssey 7Q. Mitch Gross at convergent design confirmed on Twitter. "Please quote accurately. I said there will be a path to this so A7s will work with Odyssey7Q."

any reason to prefer 7Q to Shogun for the A7s?

Over at fstopacademy, I asked:
Sony’s rethoric ("1300% of REC709") is identical to what they say about their F5 and F55. It looks great in your videos, but could it be THAT good?
And Den Lennie replied:
yes I would say it is that good – and I own an F5

I WANT ONE. NOW.

Thanks Samuel. I just might have to cancel my Gh-4 pre-order. This is basically an F55 in a DSLR form factor.

with only 8-bit, and without global shutter, and...
but yes, it's crazy value
it ticks all the boxes that matter to me, it's going to be a loooooong wait until whatever "summer" means

More like an F5, that can shoot 1080p internally and 4K externally.
Or actually pretty much a C500.
For $1700-3K.
And it takes pictures.
And it's full frame.
Wow.

Wait what happened overnight??
Lol. Honestly I've been kind of torn between the two since this was announced. But I'm becoming more convinced about this cameras dynamic range. I have not pulled the trigger just yet but I do want to see more video. Plus, I've never used a full frame camera. If I could get both I will. I don't really care about 4:22:2 vs 4:2:0. The final image is what matters. While the GH4 looks nice it still (visually) displays some of the same ol same ol (albeit much much less than before). We'll see. I want more footage from both cams. If you read Henry Olangas very long response on personal-view... THAT is exactly how I feel about the Ghs.

Indeed indeed.

I agree with the C500 comparison.

Someone just needs to go and pan the camera at a reasonable speed for us, then shake Sony up by the tie to force a price out of them.

Yes the C500 with all those other plusses would be more appropriate.

Sorry for this but Lennie has had a long close relationship with Sony. Apparently one of the people who helped design the Fs100.
And doesn't Mitch now work for Convergent.

Not slamming them but grain of salt until the thing is in some more objective
hands. I'm looking at this cam seriously too.
