Rumor: GH2

Totally a rumor at this point, and it seems a little soon, but interesting, maybe we can get our hands on this before the GH1 ships in quantity.

From 43rumors

Take it with a grain of salt guys, this rumor comes from a new source.
The source claimed to know that Panaonic has designed two new MicroFourThirds camera. One should be the expected compact model and the other one is an upgraded GH1 camera. Both cameras uses the same GH1 sensor.
The GH1 successor has:
-a better AVCHD compression rate
- 1080 60p/50p
- slightly faster autofocus
- Higher LCD refresh rate
The compact MFT model will keep the “G” nomenclature
- be a little bigger than the E-P1
- inlcude an electronic viewfinder
- be black only

I hear the sound of preorders everywhere being cancelled -lol.

and I'll get the first one in person - hehe

Like they weren't working on GH1 when the G1 was new...have fun waiting a year...I'll just be waiting a(nother) MONTH because of freaking backorder issues.

No question it will be some sort of follow up. GH2 sounds reasonable if you think LX1, LX2 and LX3. But let's enjoy that GH1 which most have not even got yet ;)

The most wanted feature of course is a higher bit rate and selectable 24/25/50/60 fps.

Does AVC-HD even support 1080/60P?

I don't doubt that the AVCHD specification can be extended by Panasonic as required - indeed, wasn't it the GH1 which motivated the introduction of 'AVCHD Lite'?

Rumours at this point could impact GH1 sales. So one has to wonder whether the motivation for their dissemination is purely innocent. But on the other hand, unless the march of technical progress suddenly grinds to a halt, the GH1 is going to seem fairly primitive in five years' time. Purchasers have to decide for themselves at what point to jump in. Relatively low cost (a matter I'm still trying to explain to my wife) encourages purchase churn of course.

Rumours like this are a bit too unspecific to take seriously.

Of course it'll have a better screen. It's like making a prediction that the next Intel processor will be FASTER than the last one.

1080/60p is not supported by AVCHD, or any other broadcast or professional video format. It only exists in computer-only forms; the ATSC and the EBU have yet to standardize on 1080/60p or 1080/50p.

I'm pretty sure the HMC-150 does 60p...

EDIT: Oh yeah, brainfart. That's only in 720 of course.

Isn't this stupidly soon for a new version? I mean, c'mon, that is just way too soon. Some people who preordered don't even have their GH-1's yet.

I heard they're shooting the Duke Nukem Forever feature film on the Scarlet. It's going to be edited on an Apple tablet computer, which is being delivered by shopatron but it's on back order for two weeks...4 weeks...a month... 2 months...

The informant could have the name incorrect. It could be referred to as the GH2 but could really be a more expensive more professional model. It only comes in black sounds like it is targeting the prosumer market. They could make it under $3000 with faster lens, hdmi out, better codec, 24p no pulldown, better audio options, and 1080p60 mjpeg in short bursts?

I'm just saying they could upsell like crazy. This is all just wishful thinking I am not saying a little bird told me this at all. :)

In hindsight I have just noticed that this rumour was right about the compact model.

The compact model is the widely rumours GF1, of which we even have products shots of. Although nothing is official yet I find it inevitable the GH1 sensor will appear next in a Panasonic camera to rival the EP1.

So could he be right about the GH2?

Is the GF1 bigger than the EP1?

No it's smaller. More pics have just come available:

It will be announced on the 2nd September...allegedly.

I am going to the IFA Berlin show on 4th September where Panasonic, Canon and Samsung will have their new cameras on display. I am hopeful for a GH1 firmware update around this time and maybe even a GH2 prototype. New M43 Lumix prime lenses are a certainty.
