Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

I think $20k versus $5k is definitely two different markets. As I see it now, it's competing with the F3 and trying to pick maybe people that the Epic or Alexa is just a bit too much for. As for the Scarlet-X, well they might not have known they were competing with that...till tonight :)

You may be right, but it's definitely debatable. I know of several people (customers) that bought the AF100, and then later replaced it with the F3. I also know that they are often spoken of together in the same breath, the same discussions, in the same magazine articles, advertisements etc.

But regardless, this certainly was an interesting, exciting day. And I'm not going to bash the Canon as much as others. I think it's a tad overpriced, but the specs and footage look great. Maybe they would have been wiser to price the cameras BETWEEN the AF100 and F3.

But it sure is interesting, fun times we live in now, huh? With the C300s, the Scarlet-X, the F3, the FS100 and AF100 all now poised in the "higher-than-DSLRs, lower-than-Alexa/EPIC" bracket. Who would have thought, just over a year ago, that we'd have so much choice?

And the truth is, things could change between now and the end of January 2012 given the pricing of the Scarlet-X is out, which I am pretty impressed with as well. All in all, it really has been an interesting day. I have to say too that the footage from the C300 does look pretty amazing. I've seen nothing from the Scarlet-X yet. Maybe I should feel fortunate that these prices are a bit out of my range at the moment, I'd hate to have to pick between the two if the price of the C300 on the street ends up being $14k.

Yeah, that's a good point: RED list price IS street price; C300 street price might actually come in around F3 (non-S-Log) and Scarlet-X territory...

Totally! It's like Jesus could come back to save us all and people would be bitching about him not bringing coffee and donuts....

Despite the price, after seeing Vincent's short--even in it's compressed state--that image is 20K price.

I was kinda miffed at first, when they announced it. Then I watched his short and took my foot out of my mouth to come back here and post.

I haven't seen anything from the F3 that made my eyes pop like that, ANYTHING. The skin, the DR, and the overall fidelity of the C300 footage from Vincent's short is tops. It's resolving the holy heck out of detail.

So yeah, it's priced pretty high and I still think the specs are underwhelming (No Dual Link SDI????) but I think once that image quality starts circulating it's gonna take off.

But you have seen Scarlet-X footage. If what RED is saying is true.. and the sensor in the Scarlet-X is the exact same one as the Epic then there is plenty of footage out there that shows it's capability.

We do see a ton of beer budgeted DLSR fans with champagne aspirations! Let's just commend the marketplace for giving people some tools that don't come with a caveat... That don't require you to say that it's still a lot of money that paid for that mini DV.. Gosh.. for that Betacam camera. Shoot, when I bought my HVX200 and necessary accessories I paid almost 11k.... And it required a lot of tweeking and care to avoid the noise. We really fail to realize that there's an entitlement syndrome with cameras and manufacturers. If you like it.. buy it and have fun. IF you don't.. then do that what you are called to do. For me, I'm still content with the Gh2 and the AF100. I'm looking forward to buying some more lenses and then if I have to sell it.. so be it. That day will come and then I'll get something else that's cool.

Let's just realize that the world doesn't revolve around our own notions of grandeur but that it's the communication and expression that counts. The ability to chance a person's mind and soul. I still think about that short film, the Red Ballon that I saw as a kid. I saw it probably a 1000 times and it was so simple and beautiful and has had a lasting impression on me.. still to this day. I mean it was probably shot on a Bolex but who cares... I don't think Woody Allen is changing his cache out and refreshing to see what's up... He just spends the day writing and creating and that my friends is what I will do tomorrow now that geek Christmas is over..

I do truly love this site though as it provides some nourishment for my geek/android brain. Stay classy DVXuser peeps and enjoy the ride.. Cause can you imageine what it would be like to be back in 1995? Hey that Beta image is sweet!!!!

But if he was shooting his return on a Panasonic then at least they'd go easy on him here......:2vrolijk_08:

I've just had an email through listing Australian pricing for the C300 at $17,999. That puts it very much on par with the F3 down here (and very close to Scarlet once you factor in enough batteries/SSDs for a full day's shooting).

They did exactly what they did with the XLH1...

Overpriced, under performng.

Putting my scarlet deposit down.

Can't see how it's over priced at 17,999 aus

F3 needs log upgrade, shoots 4:2:0, etc and it's not over priced?

Hm

Frustrating.

I like the form factor. Footage looks nice. I would live with an 8 bit codec (properly mapped, it can still look great). But why no proper 60P? Ugh.

I put my Scarlet deposit down too. I may still purchase this Canon or F3 if Red can't deliver within a few months.

Either way, thank RED for disabling what little Value the F3 had.

Just wondering how soon the same people harpin about red workflow are going to jump ship and then the workflow won't be so bad... Magically.

Oh and about those rental rates...

Oversaturated scarlets? No problem: 350/day.. If youre a lucky owner.

The daytime outdoor footage (no studio lighting) looks amazing though. The Canon is going to do really well for TV productions, documentaries, wildlife etc. The fact that it shoots broadcast standard, easily edited footage straight out of the box is the main point here. RAW is not for everyone, all of the time. I reckon the BBC will green-light this (same as the XF300) - then it will fly out the door.

I ordered the Scarlet. I must confess, I'm a very happy man today :) However, I know what I'm going to get. I'm sure in dynamic range the Scarlet actually loses to the F3 with slog and will probably to the Canon. The low light might also be worse than these 2. Their value will not lose much, to be honest. In event coverage, for example, the F3 and the Canon will be much more viable if you need quick delivery for immediate edit. However, the Scarlet is just the camera for me: 4K, it has 60P at 2K. I hope we'll get 120fps at least in 720P in the future, but these features are enough for me to jump for it. Add to that Red's commitment to the costumer, its guerrilla attitude- that, I confess, I really love- and it is really a no brainer . I'm so glad I waited!

Dynamic range loss huh? If you're shooting 2k, you can use HDRx almost all the time and enjoy 18 stops of goodness...although not sure of the heating issues. Word is it runs cooler than epic. Even so, I think when it comes to dynamic range you're all set.

But what about sensor resolution, is it real "4K" (3,75K) sensor or its simply a regular HD 1920 x 1080 and they count every red, blue and green pixel site alone?

today i'm happy to have the f3.
honestly, 120fps at 1024*540 isn't what they promised. and you need at least a XLR board to really male it work for docu-work. so that puts scarlet up to 'round 17.000.- (either a board or a pix240, latter
being the wiser choice i suppose)
Canon seems nice, but a little expensive for what it does too...
canon 4k dslr down the line, so you can expect nikon/canon to come up with 4k solutions at 24fps in the very near future...
let's not forget that nikon started the vdslr hype, and canon had the luck of timing to bring out a better version...

i hoped that those cameras forced sony to lower the price tag for slog, but as it seems that'll not be necessary for them. bummer ;-)

Remember that RED adds features through free firmware updates... I'm willing to bet that, down the line, well see a 120fps 2k update for the Scarlet.

In terms of form factor no 5D replacement anywhere in sight. Seriously if they think we are going to wait another year to replace this camera they have another thing coming.
