Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

The Canon C prototype DSLR looks oh-so-tasty for my needs. The C300 ... while outside my price range looks to be an amazing camera! Well Done Canon!!

Just awesome body that goes right along w/ my current gear. Start off w/ this newer EOS-C DSLR and move up to the C300 in the future possibly. Either way, it's a win win.

So the Scarlet is coming in at under $10K.

Need to wait for the dust to settle but Canon could have made a mistake here. Although, it's what comes out of the camera that's important. Not always the specs.

No worries! If Canon makes a mistake then they suffer the consequences. They must do better! Compete more!

I wanna talk "consumers" here , I'm worried all these PRICEY products are gonna leave use poor people with a new EOS line with line skipping and non HD res like the latest Sonys

Despite the price, after seeing Vincent's short--even in it's compressed state--that image is 20K price.

I was kinda miffed at first, when they announced it. Then I watched his short and took my foot out of my mouth to come back here and post.

I haven't seen anything from the F3 that made my eyes pop like that, ANYTHING. The skin, the DR, and the overall fidelity of the C300 footage from Vincent's short is tops. It's resolving the holy heck out of detail.

So yeah, it's priced pretty high and I still think the specs are underwhelming (No Dual Link SDI????) but I think once that image quality starts circulating it's gonna take off.

well it was probably shot on one of the $47k cine zooms or $6800 primes...

We need another 'great camera shootout' pronto :D

More like $13-14k before you can shoot with it, but still, an incredible price.

My disappointment is I'd like a C300 sized body camera that is in the realm of the FS100/AF100 that sits right between them in features but uses my Canon glass natively. I *really* like almost everything I've seen on the C300 so far, but the price. I want an S35 sized camera so the 1D and this new DSLR are right out for me. I hope somewhere in the Canon roadmap is something that competes with the FS100/AF100 and is a good bridge gap for those with the 5D and those that can't afford the C300 yet.

This is only their first camera. Give them some time. It's a given they will have something that competes in this area eventually. Although I'm not sure how they're going to remove $15K in cost.

Checking the tech specs, the C300 is actually pretty small. It only weighs 3 lbs bare and has three sets of internal ND filters: 2/4/6 stops.

Although DR is only 12 stops with Canon log, if I'm reading the chart correctly.

Also has 3 sec of pre-rec, dust-proof, splash-proof sealing, waveform monitor, vectorscope, peaking, and edge monitor focus assist.

^ What Rick said. I'm bummed.

I remember a lot of jubilation surrounding the AF100 and the release date. I'm not seeing much of that this thread, but the 15-20k price is....well like you said, I can't afford it. :undecided

Well the new 4k DSLR will crop into the sensor considerably for video output. It's somewhere between S35mm and the 1DMkIII sensor size (from what I remember of the specs). It'll be very interesting to see how Canon price it in the wake of Red's announcements.

I just watched the 1080p version, I have to admit, it looked really great. That's a lot of detail right there! I still think it's priced high from what I read, but, we'll see.

Yep, Mobius looks great. Really excited about all this new camera and lens news. Curious to see how the pricing on this puppy shakes out - sounds like this kit and a shootable Scarlet package may be closer in price than we may think. I want both though :)

Just watched XXIT as well. I gotta say, the color palette and resolution were great. I can't wait to see a video that is NOT compressed for the web out of this camera. Now with the Scarlet-X as well, maybe it will pull down the price some. Gonna be having some LONG discussions with my film partners. :) I'd like to see some more details on the Scarlet-X now that I see more on the C300. Canon claims 12-stops. Also, the rolling shutter performance in those videos was pretty amazing as well.

Barry won the bet(s).

Uhhhhh......come again?

Barry bet that there would be no Canon professional large-sensor camera with XLR inputs from Canon's pro video division on the market in 2012. He bet that you wouldn't be able to walk into B&H and walk out with a "Canon M43-or-larger-sensored pro camera prior to January 1, 2013".

I believe the EXACT text of his bet was "Any takers? Who wants to put their money on the line and say that Canon will deliver for retail sale, a large-sensor pro video camera in 2010, 2011, or 2012?"

When reminded of the bet(s) after Canon announced the Nov 3rd event, Barry stood by his prediction, and then said multiple times that the event wouldn't be to announce any new camcorders at all, but would rather likely just be about Canon's support facility for their Hollywood operations.

Later, he said that the only camera that might be announced would be a 2/3" sensor camera based on the "hair dryer" concept, and wouldn't be something to compete with the F3.

Sooooooooo......tell me again how Barry won?

I, on the other hand, said:

- Canon would announce not one, but two large-sensor, removable-lens pro cameras today
- One would be PL mount, one (the lower-priced) would be EOS mount
- They would have 4K sensors
- They would compete in the same space with the F3 and AF100

Now, the only aspect of my prediction that wasn't absolutely DEAD-ON is whether the EOS mount version will be lower-priced than the PL-mount version (yet to be clarified), and whether you think the new cameras compete with both the F3 AND the AF100 (debatable).

But if you think Barry's predictions (and bet) overall......are closer to what happened today than my predictions.......well, you're kidding yourself.

Seriously.

I think $20k versus $5k is definitely two different markets. As I see it now, it's competing with the F3 and trying to pick maybe people that the Epic or Alexa is just a bit too much for. As for the Scarlet-X, well they might not have known they were competing with that...till tonight :)

This is how I remember it too because I debated Barry as well because he didn't think it would be a product announcement then he kept saying it would be the hairdryer (or similar). I agree Barry lost the bets.

Yeah, I guess some people just don't get that 20K and 5K are not the same markets.
