Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

I reckon this thing is going to sell by the bucketload for TV productions, wildlife, documentaries etc.

True cinema camera - next gen maybe.

"I'd be very surprised if it was a 2K or higher cam. Most people will be happy as clams with "true" 1080 resolution, 10 bit 4:2:2 color space, XLRs, a ND wheel, and a clean SDI/HDMI out.

If the price is $15K, I think Canon would be making a mistake - you want to sell glass? Make a cheaper camera then your competition. Either it's going to be priced more along the lines of an AF100, or more expensive then the F3 (a truly "pro" camera).

I suppose it could be both as has been rumored, but the $10-15 K pricing model seems a bit out of wack if true. Of course, that price is a lot more justifiable if the camera's 2K or higher resolution-wise... "

I wrote that in the 'something new from canon' almost 8 hours ago at dvinfo, and while I'm obviously not surprised at the specs (given the above prediction), I am shocked at the pricing. The same basic camera - plus included hard mounted 30.4 - 304mm lens - in the form of the Canon XF105 is $4,000. You can get "L" series glass in the form of the XF305 for $7,500.

Not sure why anyone already committed to Sony or RED would look twice at this camera given the pricing. More to the point, I'm not sure why Canon believes new buyers will flock to this camera in any substantial way.

Canon seems to have missed a very large opportunity to completely dominate the sub $10 K market, instead becoming a company that puts out a camera very similar to the Sony F3 (and presumably SCARLET as well) a year after the fact.

those specs are all rumours, there is no way the ywould have it before an image of it displayed on the screen has been projected.

I think, the way these things work, is that often the official specs and so on are released in an 'embargoed' press release, which means the parties that
receive the press release cannot release it until a certain time (usually, until sometime after the live event starts, because by then, people are tuning
into the live event.) These specs that you are calling 'rumors' are coming from an official press release at DVinfo, which is NOT a rumor site. As a
matter of fact, if people TRY to start rumors, the threads are banished to an 'Area 51' forum. I'd say there is a very GOOD probability that these
specs are fact. In fact, if you want to make a friendly bet, let me know, Chris doesn't do rumors.

I would buy the Canon in a heart beat only if it was priced at 12k. I'm guessing the Scarlet to be priced at 15k-17k. You're better going with a sony F3. I really wanted that Canon too but well see what Scarlet is priced at.

It's pretty simple guys. If this camera is bad or overpriced. It won't sell or it will create an opportunity for competitors and Canon will learn their lesson. The market will work its invisible hand.

"hmnn .. looking at my nettop i think the guys at the forums are not much impressed"

What does DVinfo has that nobody else does? NO live blog has mentioned anything yet. Everyone is still watching shorts!

Chris Hurd at DVinfo was under NDA for a while - looks like he got the facts early on (he has already written a detailed article on dvinfo, including specs and price).

I HATE to say I told you so....but:

I am micro-budget biased am I certain, but....I'd have taken a 5dMIII with 4:4:4 RGB or at least clean HDMI out with 4:4:4. Sadly, I think it will be Canon's best Sony impression. Too bad. We already have Sony....we need Canon to bring a different angle....(like the DSLR movement...a TOTALLY different angle). Oh well....time will tell...and lucky for us all, the clock is ticking down.

ps...An F3 with Canon's name on it = "EPIC FAIL!!!!" lol We already have the F3 (and it rocks BTW)...try something different.

EPIC FREAKING FAIL CANON!!!!! It ain't over till it's over....but....we already have an F3 that says Sony on the side. Your pathetic attempt at remaking the F3 (that says Canon on the side and has a cool looking body)....uh...ya.

Time to enjoy the "Red" show....

I'm not trying to be mean here....I'm just sad that Canon didn't get the important aspects of what we want, and in so doing, has apparently MISSED EVERY MARKET!!!

Too expensive to justify AF100/FS100 folks selling
Too expensive to even tempt a DSLR upgrader
Too lame compared to the F3 to even consider buying Canon instead of Sony
Too lame of a codec compared to the Scarlet....sensor size not with standing...
Too lame to even mention 720P....uh....hmm. (300.00 HX9 = 1080/60....16K Canon 720/60P....alrighty then)

So....who is going to buy this thing? Lame Canon....totally Lame. Better luck next time....

Sorry for off topic but I've always meant to ask whether it's only on my computer that alaskacameradude's posts come out jumbled with sentences split weirdly...

Maybe they'll make a cheaper model? This 16K price point makes my decision easier.....FS100.

Too expensive, but the price in half then maybe we'll talk, now i have to tell my clients that are paying 7d prices they have to pay more?

The big thing here that all of you guys, and esp the guys over at RED, need to come to grips with is that people dont care about all this tech crap like we might. My point is proven when you look at how much is shot for indie films, TV and everything else on 7D's and so on. If this does something they cant, which it does obviously, then it will sell. The F3 might be the best lower priced "pro" camera but people will still go for this because it is Canon and they will see it as a new 7D or 5D and people will ask for it and thus, it will be bought up.

I am done with all of this crap. The camera chasing game is mostly a racket and robs geeks of their savings and time. We are at a point where the difference between a $50k Epic and a $11k Sony are barely noticeable anymore. I could trick 99.9% of people with either one, even on a big screen. What you need for a business model these days is an F3 but with bodies to match what someone thinks they want. Put the guts into a Canon body or a RED body, etc. Now that I would buy!

Well, I order my Sony FS100 tomorrow!..can anyone recommend a reputable a store outside of ny state so I can save a bit on taxes, Thanks

Alot of negativity considering no one knows the juicy details like DR, low light, bit rate etc

Also, since when has the intial price translated to street price.

Well, at that price I am going to keep shooting with my FS100 for a while. So, they are going after the F3... Good luck with that.
