Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

If this is true, this development will be of great interest. Do you consider your source to be a reliable person? I hope that you are right about this.
.
For the record, I heard the same thing about a month ago from a camera sales rep that will not be named. The S35 sensor was also reported to be a true 4K sensor, and it was already on a feature film shooting, some of the footage "to be shown" at the event.

Also heard a price tag of about 10~12K starters.

I don't know how much I buy into it, but at least that's the general consensus around here.

Please do not hold me to this, I haven't posted because I know it could just be here-say.

Indeed. We heard it from Canon people, reproduce the message as same as we received it but in the end it looks like 'we' said it :-)

it took canon over 5 years to come out with a camera the competes with the hvx200 and the sony ex1.

There is a good possibility that the company may be evolving, and adapting to market demands. They may sense an opportunity here to expand into a new market.

If it's already shooting a feature film, I can see why Red would be concerned. They've been bragging about all the major films that use Epic, but now they're no longer the only 4k game in town. Yes, Sony announced the F65, but that's at $65k and it looks a little bulky. If the Canon is fairly small and lightweight (and at $12k it probably is), it would be a good choice for 3D rigs and a direct competitor to Epic. Add "Alexa good" image quality and we've got a real horse race.

I don't think Canon would open a Hollywood service center for a $12k prosumer camera, though. So based on Jannard's comment about a three of a kind beating two pairs, I would guess that Canon will also announce another higher end camera. As someone mentioned earlier, the cameras would capture 4k but only record 2k. I actually like this better because most of us only need 2k (or 1920x1080 HD which is slightly less), so we don't have to buy an external recorder.

Bring it on! Can't wait 'til Nov 3.

Haha... we're gonna get in trouble because of it!

By the way! long time no see, Emanuel!!!!

Have you moved to Epic X yet? What are your plans for camera purchases in the future?

I am in no position to speculate, although I have in the past. I think, if anything, it's not exactly concern that RED is showing, it's a the spirit of competition and as far as I can tell there is only ONE company that could compete with what RED has to offer: amazing image at a steal. Jim hasn't said WHO that is, but I believe that's Canon.

I've always said that Canon is cut-throat, they'll gut their own line up whenever they do start pushing technology. They also have the power to create the most incredible sensors out there. So, yeah, Canon's that company.

By the way, ALEXA is considered the most film-like digital image available at this time. As good as EPIC is, Alexa is the vehicle that most people want to drive. I haven seen enough footage to know that 1080/2K is great for now, and EPIC is a close second to what the Alexa can produce...

The claim that the new Canon camera will have "An Alexa like image" is supposed to speak toward the overall fidelity of image captured and... according to what I was told... that goes for Dynamic Range and the ability to fine tune curves, or shoot out to a REC or Log curve from the get-go.

In short, the new Canon is supposed to be the real-deal mini-Alexa, and nothing from Sony or Panasonic's supposed to be able to hang with the 10-12K body that Canon's about to drop.

Once again, though, you don't know anything until the 3rd, so don't take it to heart. It could be a MAJOR flop and Jim might actually know it, which is going to only strengthen RED's stock value two fold.

I'm sorry koli, but I'm taking this info to heart. If it falls through I will just half to deal with the busted pipe dream ON Nov. 3, but until then I am wishful thinking. I have not purchased a cam since my 5d mark II and canon may cause me to spend once again, if specs are as rumored.

My thought is this: the specs are probably right, but even my [hackneyed] screenwriting looks somewhat good on paper. Until you see footage, real-world examples of what can be done with minimal tweaking, you just can't say what's up.

If RED's only going 2/3" (I know for some it's good, for me and a lot of others it's not what we're looking for) and Canon's offering comes up short, I could see a renewed interest in RED MX bodies and even F3 bodies.

Wait and see is the name of the game.

Damn you Kholi!!! I will take it to heart...and get a tattoo on my bottom....so you'd better be right!!!!!

The canon had better at least keep up w/ the F3 and sLog. If it doesn't.... just disappointing....

Within a month the F3 will be pushing 14.5 stops @ the optimized 800 ISO. That is to say, 2 stops cleaner than an Alexa, with the same sensitivity, and roughly equal DR.

That's quite the competitor.

"The Canon" (I think that's the name for it since we dunno what it's called haha) is supposed to push that DR out of box, without the cost of upgrades, and is supposed to be about" 12K...

If that holds true, and it's clean, it'll be more about the other companies keeping up by offering discounts on purchases or free things.

I think it's 13.9 at Abel... so that'd be 13.1... if I remember right slog is like 3.5k... so that's 16.6k... so at the rumored price of 15k... that would still be cheaper if the Canon did have slog... and I keep dreaming of 1 to 120 fps also... but since I'm not a dp... probably rent... unless Canon comes out with some prims like the cp's... the one thing I have liked about Red if they staywith the upgrade path.. sending 5 to 10k isn't so bad... to upgrade...

That said we don't know the other specs, yet.

Like connectivity, dual link, 444, 3D.... etc.

And it could still be a photocopier .

No, I don't really think so, just stiring the pot a little.

Double, double, toil and trouble
Fire burn and cauldron bubble

Sorry, been watching the Scotish Play on DVD

He He
