Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

I still think the focus of the 3rd Nov announcement will be something other than a camera. Canon may still show one or more cameras but they will be incidental to something more fundamental.

Whoops. I deleted my "entitlement" post about a minute after I posted it but was too slow! I guess I just find it kind of crazy that people can find ANYTHING to complain about these days in terms of technology.

I see everything these days as a total bonus. The FS100 is a major upgrade in my eyes over a 5D in so many ways. But for some it's like they want every upgrade to be revolutionary. Everything has to be faster, smaller or bigger, better, cheaper. I mean five years ago if you'd told people what the price and specs of an FS100 would be in 2011 their chin would have hit the floor.

They'd probably taken you to the nut house... showing my age here... I learned on film... that means shooting cutting and post.. I'll be nice to myself and won't post how many years... but I can remember having a class... you had two choices... a minute commercial or a minute psa... this teacher ran his class like a studio... you had to shoot and finish on film... that project cost me at least 3k... and I didn't get to keep the camera... the nice thing about that class... he taught us how to go through the whole filmmaking progress in a minute...

I think it was Timur who said once... speaking of the F3... if you would have told me 5 years ago I could get 11 stops of dr in a camera under 20k... he would have told you you're nuts...

Yes and no. The low light ability of the EOS 1DX is better than I ever hoped. Likewise, the shrinkage in the size and price of flash cards is science-fictionesque. On the other hand, I have wished for a 35mm sensor since the 90s and expected to see one about five years before they started popping up. In general, its easier to make a big chip than a small one, so I think the wait was simply executive muddleheadedness. Likewise, all sensors emit uncompressed RAW, and it's just as easy to compress it to 50 Mbps 4:2:2 as 25 Mbps 4:2:0.

Film constantly outperforms video in dynamic range but underperforms in noise. Video is cleaner but clips faster. Hello, the two are related! If camera makers tuned their gamma curves to have as much noise as 35mm film then they also would have about as much latitude. Except now, maybe they won't have to. If the EOS 1DX can shoot acceptably at ISO 102400, then it can shoot acceptably at something like ISO 800 and have about 18 stops.

But then again:

It's probably easier to compress to an I-Frame codec as the frames stand on their own. It's a matter of being able to handle the data rate. I'm thinking commodety flash memory is only just catching up. P2 cards have had that rate for years, but aren't the sort of thing you can pick up in your local camera store. True raw video (IE what comes off the sensor) is easiest of all but the data rate....

Like I said before to the guy who was complaining about there being nothing "revolutionary" -- my question is: even if there was, what would you DO with it? Anything at all? Or just complain that you can't afford it?

Fact of the matter is that an AF100 or FS100 delivers all the image you need to make an utterly gorgeous film, today. If you're willing to work harder, you can get astonishingly good results from an $899 GH2. Will something "revolutionary" come out on Nov. 3rd? Maybe, maybe not. But I'd bet that the capabilities of today's cameras so far exceed the capabilities of today's shooters that I really think people should do a whole lot more shooting and a whole lot less complaining.

Complaining about today's cameras is kind of like blaming your shoes if you're not a better basketball player, or blaming your racquet of you're not on the pro tennis circuit. Today's cameras can hold up their end of the bargain.

QFT.

The only thing holding my work back is myself.

Well said, the tech out these days is so far ahead of what was out a few years ago it's amazing. If you can't get a good image out of these cameras you need to go back and study the craft a bit more to see where you're going wrong. And if the AF-100, FS-100 or DSLR's dont do it for you, you can rent a F3 or Red for pretty cheap these days. The fact that I can rent an F3 for pretty much what I used to rent an ex1/3 a few years back is pretty amazing to me. And if you cant get a beautiful image from the F3, pack it in and find a new career :) I love where cameras are right now and where they are headed, and even if nothing better comes on Nov. 3rd I am still a very happy person. Though if something amazing and priced well comes out, I might be just a little happier ;)

Exactly -- we can all be happier when something new and more capable comes along, no problem with that. Better is better. But -- seriously, today's products are way more than good enough and, as was pointed out in the post above, you can rent an F3 for what an EX1 cost to rent a couple of years ago.

So true Barry. ...and in my case, so sad, and so true.

I just completed my first entry into a DVXFest. I'm not proud of my film, but I am proud to have entered. What TRULY lacked on my film.....was time.....Rrrrrrr......it would have been much better if I had more time...and next time I will start sooner and have more time. The LAST concern that I had, while making my film, was my camera. The SHOTS I took are ***much*** better than the story I told. So, my story telling needs to improve, and I will continue to work on my story telling skills.

The cameras available today, the ones that are collecting dust as we type at this very moment, are FAR SUPERIOR than the stories we are telling with them. :(

(BTW....I shot my entire film on the 299.00 HX9.)

I welcome a new camera, but it won't be the difference on the next film I make....the only difference that will matter is if I tell a better story. Cheers Barry!

I'm on a feature right now w/ F3 log, and a ki pro.

the dynamic range is so high, I have so much freedom its crazy. It never blows out, and its noise is so low, and so sensitive that I'm shooting whole scenes with 200 and 400w hmi's, while having sunlight comng in through windows. Honestly, I'm hitting the wall with what I can do with the lights, waaaaay before the camera fails. Its like being able to get any shot you want whenever you want, with the simplest of of lightng packages.

We have:
2k tungsten blonde
1k tungsten par
1k tungsten openface
2x 650's
2x 300's

1.2k hmi
400w hmi
200w hmi

That's it.

Day interiors, night interiors, day exteriors, night exteriors...... I can do it all with just those lights.

That's freaking ridiculous!

5 days to go and we'll all find out....scratch the 1D & printer off the list.....as for the previous post, let's think positive and as Barry has pointed out, if you can't work and make great pictures with what is out now or what is coming, we then, the problem is not the cameras, its ...........

Kind of shocked that the announcement is this close and there have been no major leaks from Canon or RED re: specs or price.

A lot at stake for both companies. They probably NDA'd the hell out of everyone with any knowledge of anything to do with the product ;)
