Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

As Canon does not have a larger camera than the XF305 (as I know) what can be expected is something in line with that but with a larger sensor APS-C presumable and everything else pretty much the same. Another route for Canon to improve and built on their 5DmkII success story. They might do both.

So there's talk that Scarlet has changed... so maybe Red has picked up the printer business and Scarlet will now be a high resolution printer - announcing November 3rd. Then Canon will actually announce a 8K camera at the price point of the FS100... tables turned, history changed - no one globally saw it coming.

I wouldn't be placing any bets against Canon. They have very deep pockets, manufacture their own chips, & are sitting on top of a pile of patents.

RED's announcement that they'd be playing in the highend stills world seems more than enough to put them in Canon's crosshairs.

Even if it's a camera that only competes against the F3, or the 100(s), it will likely have better highlight rolloff.

At least that's what I hope.

I'm looking for something moderate as well. I'm not getting my hopes up really, but I am hoping for something better then what's currently available. Every camera will have its quirks, but even if they just came out with something with a 7D sized sensor that didn't have moire/aliasing issues and could use their excellent 422 XF Codec at 50mb/s, then I would be ecstatic. 10-bit and 4k and all that is great, but it's not first on my list. If they can just fix the issues that are plaguing those who love DSLRs most, or do some sort of hybrid like a bigger sensor XF300, I'm there...and I'm happy.

it's kind of funny how some people (mainly red cultists) seem to think that the red company is a threat to canon, or to any of the other japanese giants, when in fact it's the other way around.

Like most production companies that use the 5dmkII we've been using it in commercial productions like music videos, high end corporate videos and commercials for national tv broadcasting ever since it was released, on the sole basis of the unique look you get from the camera. The full frame has everything to do with it and the low cost is just a bonus. We create images that have that "look" you just can't get with the smaller sensors. Not once have we heard our customers complain about moire, rolling shutter or anything of the sort, because we find ways to work around those "problems".

I was pretty vocal and against the Full Frame thing when the MKii first dropped. Even after using it for a while, still, I couldn't really wrap my head around it. Then I happened across it not too long ago and something *clicked* for me when shooting with the 5D MKii that made me crave Full Frame shooting. I like how the Epic is slightly larger than normal S35...

But, I want Full Frame. It looks GREAT cropped to 2.35:1/2.40:1, 1.85:1, 4:3, or just as is 16:9.

I doubt this will be a Full Frame offering, but if it were it'd be hard to want to shoot with anything else, even at the cost of having to use Canon Specific Glass, Master Primes, Zeiss Compacts or straight-up still lenses. Just would not care.

Give me Full Frame.

Screw FF and video..... I want canon to make a 3k$ 60MP medium format camera...... wth nice low cost good quality medium format 6x6 lenses, but to retain all its ETTL, and live view stuff.... (if it shot video.... cool I suppose...).

That would be historic.... and revolutionary. Lowcost, medium format imaging.

I got a call today at the production company I work for from Canon. They were taking a survey about Canon video cameras. After I answered his questions about video cams, he started asking if I ever shoot with DSLRs. I was actually in the middle of a 5D edit today, so that was pretty funny. He asked me about problems with DSLRs. I told him about lack of pro audio, moire, and rolling shutter, etc.

He thanked me for my time, and was about to go when I asked him if he could tell me what was the big November announcement. He quickly replied "oh, do you mean the 5D Mark III?" Surprised by his candor, I got him to confirm. He said, yes, indeed the 5D Mark III will be out by the end of the year.

Take it for what it's worth.

Remember that Jack-Pack RAW video rumor a while ago? Was gonna connect to the 5D to get RAW out of it?

Here's my outrageous and hair-brained dream: What if the 5D MKIII has a thunderbolt port (or something crazy like that) that lets you pop on a module to record raw 5K from the camera out to SSD's or High-Capacity CFs?

I say forget imaging ALL TOGETHER! I want Canon to make a blow-up doll that calls me "Papi Chulo" and knows how to cook home made pizza!!!!

Oh my, I hope you are prophet! that would be insane!

Can't remember where I read it... but there was post saying that there was a couple 5d raw cameras being tested in Europe last year...

Unless they've dealt with pixel binning and other downsampling issues, as well as the other ergonomic an functional limitations shootng video on a dslr entails, the so called 5dmkiii has no interest for me.

it had better take freaking awesome photos..... that's what I care about...

That's all well and good for people who already have an SLOGged F3 to shoot with! I want full-frame video without too much in the way of compromises!

VistaVision it's the way of the future.

Whether it's a MKIII (hopefully) or an S35 video form factor it's already pretty clear that it's good enough to scare the crap out of RED. An aliasing and moire fix, better sensitivity, 60p, and a codec improvement are enough for me to buy a MKIII over anything else period. The biggest demand is for DSLR form factor not F3 style bodies. Even the AF100 and FS100 are bigger than I'd like and not rugged or stealthy. I'm testing the NEX-5N and flying it on a blackbird without any counterweight! It's too light! 24p looks fantastic. 60p needs more Mbits.
