ROXOR-Filmpower integration 3-axis Stabilization VS DJI Osmo

Look who finally decided to show up...

P1240050K.JPG

battery is charging, but the first impression overall isn't what i'd call "$400"

the box stubbornly advertises 4k. and 20mp photos, but right under that specifies 12.4mp sensor.

some initial observations...the LCD came very dirty, and the side panel isn't even connected and doesn't seem to want to snap back into place. the battery edge seems hand shaved and the manual has some of the worst small/poorly printed type ive seen.

I always try to keep things in perspective of price/value, so as i evaluate, i'll see whether it's worth the $200 i paid, or somewhere closer to 400.

Keep the reports coming. I noticed from your picture that you got a full frame lens. It doesn't look like a full frame lens. I could be wrong.

ha, indeed. i had to read it a few times to realize it's specifying a focal length of 3.87mm which is equivalent to a 21mm full frame lens

User review.

So here is a test of the Gimbal in Daylight. The best settings I could get were 60FPS (I converted to 24FPS) exposure at 0 and daylight white balance. Forget about audio. On Premiere, I white balance, reduced the contrast and unsharp masked (-7) in order to get rid of the moire. I also reduced the chroma to 90%.(the contrast and Color are unbearable on the camera) The gyros are pretty solid, they are pretty accurate, but in my opinion the camera needs a major firmware if it is a 4k sensor. It should have a log(flat) mode like the GoPro in order to correct with LUT and or allow for a better dynamic range. It should also allow you to set exposure lock. Or, it maybe my camera is defective?????
My final wish would be for a better compression, I transcode the files to ProRes and they simply can’t hold it. H264? MPEG? More Bandwith? yes.
My grade for this camera is D- again at $399 is too much, maybe $159. Improve the firmware and it could be $199. However, its a toy not made for pro work.

Thanks very much for this test video. What's all that weird red glitter-like compression artifacts around the front of the mini cooper? Is it exactly what I just described it as?

There's flares from sun bouncing off chrome but if the look odd it may be due to the compression. He notes that he wishes for better compression. It might also be related to the color and contrast issue he mentions.

These are from Filmpower (not an end user). You can see the contrast color issue the user mentions that he saw in the original video. Blacks look very crushed and color saturation is extremely high. You can also see the exposure stepping. I'd say the video also looks a bit over sharpened.

That's not surprising. Given its look, and the orange and white design, I suspect the Roxor was targeted as a fun toy for consumers. Consumers like saturated colors, sharpness, and deep blacks. Think of the of the TV show 'Survivor'. If they could turn the saturation knob up to 11, they would.

The Roxor is in a funny position. The average consumer isn't in the market for a gimbal. Most people that want a gimbal are in the pro business. The Roxor can't deliver on the level of pros and so it sits in limbo. It's a $399 toy that no one wants.

Given the wide use of smartphones I think even consumers can buy a gimbal only without camera for less money and get better result given the quality of smartphone cameras.

ROXOR basically matches a $300 gimbal with a $100 action camera. One can pay the same and get that as separates but later upgrade to a better action camera such as maybe the GoPro Silver.
While ROXOR has only an ease of use advantage since the camera is built in, having no ability to lock exposure may make it less advantageous than other consumer options.

Not only can it achieve a better result, it's also much much cheaper. The Roxor is crap.

Our product positioning is consumer electronics, the price of Gopro Silver is $399, ROXOR parameter is higher than it, and have stable function.

Don't kid yourself. The Roxor doesn't have the image quality of the GoPro Silver. They may shoot at the same frame rate but the image quality is WAY better than the Roxor. The Roxor doesn't even look as good as my $100 action cam that shoots 4K at 24FPS.

I checked out your Facebook page. Almost everyone is requesting a refund and there are many people also saying the gimbal isn't even working properly and none of you are answering any emails that people are inquiring about.

I've finally gotten a chance to start fiddling with this. Here's a very exciting video of me walking and eating an apple

Running notes...
-Part of my unit's bezel arrived half off, and won't snap back in
-My unit's LCD came very dirty
-Memory card slot is very annoying for insertion and removal
-My unit's battery looks hand shaved, as if it wasn't fitting. Doesn't spring out, have to pry it out
-Frequently wants to skew off-horizion. Calibration seems to work somewhat.
-Menu settings reset after power cycle, really annoying.
-Unit shakes when gimbal end points are reached.
-No 24P mode
-No real 4K video
-No real 2.7K video
-Audio recording good for scratch track only. No input option.
-Manual is tiny & poor print quality, barely readable
-Menu refers to buttons that aren't labeled as such in the manual (Enter)
-Manual refers to buttons in wrong physical location
-Front of the lens reads: " F2.8 f3.87=21mm Full Frame Lens. I've figured they mean that it's focal length is 3.87mm, which is equivalent in FOV to a 21mm focal frame lens.
-Video quality looks on par with a gen1 gopro hero HD, and likely identical to some of the knockoff gopro units current on the market in the 100-$150 arena.

Link for exciting video?

[edit] I guess videos don't show up on phones. I see it now on my computer.

You can buy a bricked Galaxy S5 for $50.

So it's not only a camera for the gimbal, but when near wi-fi, you can use it like a tablet.

Darren, the cinematography is stellar. Getting that vintage moiré pattern on the buildings in the background is great. Having the protagonist take that first bite and then choke on it. Brilliant! The apple represents the world. The protagonist, exiting his shell, takes his first bite of the world and chokes on it. Meanwhile, behind him the images are faulty. Society is fractured. The snow, representing the cold world surrounding him.

And then it is all done in one take. Wow. Sundance here you come.
