Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Followup: Tom Rost at Rostronics did me justice and promised to send the missing light stand via priority mail. He has two people check the orders, but oh well, sometimes that happens I guess. Definately top notch service. I received an email from him within 30 minutes of sending it, very pleased with the respnsiveness and dedication to building a great business.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Looks like I'm breaking down and getting a kit. Will be getting:

(2) 200W
(2) 650W
(1) 1000W

A few stands (8'); a few softboxes, some scrims and all will have barndoors and focus control and a couple C-Stands (Avenger) to boot. What I am amazed at is the price difference compared to trying to get an Arri kit.

I too was informed of certain items not in stock as of today and will be waiting for the shipment!

I cant wait.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Got the 1400W dual power kit for a shoot this past weekend. Very nice stuff here! Took a bit of doing to figure out the softboxes, but once we got the technique it was no problem.

Alas, during the shoot one of our stands got pulled on and fell: the light itself is okay, but the 200W unit went out immediately. I'm guessing the bulb came loose or the filament broke, not sure which yet. Anyone have a source for bulbs? ::)

Second question is about dimming these bad boys. Any ideas on what's a good dimmer or light board to use that'll leave the color temperature where it's at?

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

that sucks, i always tape down the lights when shooting on hard floors. On carpets I use ankle weights and strap them on. The weights wont stop it from falling 100% but it will slow down the tip over time if its hit hard enough and hopfully someone can catch them.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Sorry, just getting a bit late to this thread.

What Britek light heads are you people buying? In January I am planning a trip to the USA to get some gear: camera, tripod, field monitor and lights too.

I am not too sure of what to get yet, so I was planning to buy something that could take several lamps types. Only the Lowel DP seems to do that, but it gets very expensive when you start to add barndoors, cable, etc.

The Britek 600w focusable head looks interesting, but it will only take 600w lamps. The 500w kit also looks interesting, but I wonder if the light will be enough.

It probably will, though, as the job I will be undertaking are interviews.

Perhaps a 500w kit plus an extra 600w head...

Are there any softboxes that can be used with the 600w heads?

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

I was going to order some lighting from this store......until i saw the shipping costs, which pushed me over budget as i live in the UK. Does anyone know of any good lighting companies like this one in the UK?
Thanks

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

It's my first experience with lighting. I know that Rogue Crew had some good comments about the 500W/1KW kit but I'am unable to determine if it's a good kit for a beginner. So what would be a good starting kit ? I'am willing the pay enough to buy a good kit that will evolve with me in the futur.

Thank's

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Well i got my refund check today from my grants at school, and what was the first thing I did. went straight to rostronics and bought the 2k kit with adjustable 500-1000W lights, two softboxes, 8' stands and two barndoors (he threw the second one in for free), plus the 5% discount. Am looking forward to getting them, as I have severl scenes for my short where my current lights just won't cut it. I have to say that the guy at Rostronics is a great guy, at least over the phone.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

I can't figure out how to buy just the cases for my kit. I should have ordered them in the first place.
1200 WATT STUDIO KIT W/Barndoors, Softbox, & Stands.
Can somebody send me a link for just the case?
thanks,
Sam

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Just call Tom or e-mail him directly, and ask him. I don't think they offer cases as a website-orderable item, but he definitely sells 'em.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

I have only seen one or two indirect references to this, I hope I am not asking something that was already answered... How do the Britek lights compare (the good and bad) with something like the basic starter lowel kits like those offered by B&H (totas, omnis, dp's etc..) I am new to this, and i understand the price/quality is incredible on the Briteks, and would love to have an excuse to buy from Rostronics. But i was wondering if anybody could post some pros and cons or more concrete comparisons? Thanks guys for all your input, this site rocks. ;D

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Hey guys I have the two hundred watt Britek and I'd like to diffuse the light before the barn doors. I need something that doesn't melt or burn. Any ideas how I should make something .
Should I go to a Glasier and have him cut me out a 3" round
frosted or milk glass? Can I do this with plastic?

Way to blow up the thread Aram.  :o

Great thread by the way, this place is one hell of a resource! I'll be going to the Rostronics store to get my first set of lights, they look like a great deal and they should solve my lighting problem. I think the 1200W Dual 2 - Softbox Kits and a couple of Britek G-2000 200W Lights with stands should do it for my movie lighting, thoughts?

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Hey all-
The rostronics lights which you reccomend may be just the thing Im looking for. Are these lights as durable and reliable as lowells? I am doing alot of interviews, and was thinking about the 1300 watt 2 softbox kit (650w. ea). Would I need that much wattage, or would 2 250 watt lights work well enough with softboxes? Any reviews/reccomendations of these lights would be appreciated.
Thanks
Brian
