Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

..rostronics just ran out of soft boxes. they are out of stock on the site. i called up to see when they would be in, and Tom said he actually had one left there, and then he actually changed the site so i could buy it real quick, and then changed it back.. talk about service! :o the other week he added the option to buy cases with a kit for me as well.

..anyway , he said that there is actually a worldwide shortage of one of the softbox materials right now, and he estimates it could be a couple months or so before they have them in again. they just got blindsided with the shortage all of a sudden ..just a heads up for those looking to purchase right now. kits with just bardoors are still available though. :)

Whoa. So filmmakers are depleting the world of natural softbox materials? :o

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

..apparently the last known "softworm" which pruduces softbox diffusion material from its glands, and only mates once every 7 years was run over by a runaway stroller because they commercialized his solitary habitat with a hotdog stand, and a bubble gum machine. ...what have we done?!!?!?!?

..i dont know whats really going on, but he said this particular stuff is at a real shortage right now.. probably some manufacturing issue.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Damn those runaway strollers! When will parents learn?

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

does anyone know if these lights can be run in europe with 220/240V instead of the 110V in the US? do they have a builtin transformator for that (like on PCs)?

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

i asked your question to rostronics via email who said that i can just change the bulb to a 240V one and it will work fine.
what i need to know is the exact bulb model numbers. this will help me to check if they are available locally.
i have asked this to rostronics more than once but they did not answer. in one bulb summary they claim that the bulbs are colour corrected. what does this actually mean? will i get the same performance if i stuck a 240V bulb from any other store?
regards,
Stephen.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

What do you guys think of the dual wattage 600's? Two 300 watt bulbs with a switch for each.
I'm thinking of getting a pair with the soft boxes (kit). What do you think about not having a focus knob?

I will be using these for shooting commercials. How big of a room will these things light?

Any help would be great as this my first endever into lighting.
I've done alot of reading but nothing matches the experienced members of this awsome board.

thanks once again!

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Forget about using convertors. You'll get along just fine with a higher voltage lamp. I carry both kinds of lamps for every reflector I use, 120V for location, smaller wattage, and 240V for studio (Or for direct power connections in higher voltage shots). In fact, 240V lamps last longer and put less current.

You must buy speciality-color corrected lamps though. Speaking of halogen-tungsten, they are not terribly expensive. Go to a cine supply store near you and try out the lamps. The clerk will probably tell the bulb just from checking out the socket.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Just got off the phone with Tom from Rostronics. Very nice guy.

I was having problems with my credit card processing and we ended up talking about the fact that alot of items were out of stock. Seems there was more demand for these lights than expected. He hopes that inventory will be back up in about a month, apparently it's all on a slow boat that takes 5 weeks. So if you want anything, you better get it now before what's left is sold out too.

He asked me to pass a thanks along to the DVXUser community for the great support.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Thanks for the tip you guys!

I just got a dual 300/600 with the recommended heavy duty tripod, and the thing is just awesome. Having the usual issues getting the softbox together, but overall, for 200 bucks, this is a sweet sweet light...and it's ALL MINE!!! No scrounging or borrowing or using Sears work lights bouncing off the cieling. Also nice to know the money''s going to a good company. I think I'm going to get another one to round out the kit.

Actually thanks for all the tips you guys...now that I think about it. This forum is what convinced me to pony up the doo and get the DVX. I just finished editing a little piece for a friend, and I was constantly amazed at how beautiful the images were...an amazing camera to say the least.

thanks!
Andy

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

i still dont know what to get to start off (dramatic shorts, mostly indoors in semi-tight quarters)..I've read the "lighting for Digital Video and Television" which explain the 3point set up pretty well, but what about "film lightining"?
I dont want to spend 400bucks on something im not sure will work out for me. i dont feel like starting a post about it cause i bet the info is on here somehwere, i just cant seem to find it

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

awesome, good info, im just always confused about lighting (Although i really want to learn). i have 2 500 watt halogen worker lights, but when i use them, even bouncing off of a board, they're so incredibly bright its fills the room with a bright yellow colour. i couldn't imagine using another one. I get the soft boxes really make a difference?

anyone know whethere the 3 point set up is used in film lighting? when doing...say...a scene in a bedroom/living room?

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

John Jackman's book is a good start and there are others like "Matters of Light & Depth" by Ross Lowel.

You could also look at Walter Graff's website
http://www.bluesky-web.com/

Click on "Instruction" on the left side of the page, scroll to the bottom and click on any of the headings under "How-To..." and "Technique". Walter publishes a (mostly) monthly newsletter with pics for $15 for twelve issues - I've found it really useful. He also posts frequently here at DVXuser.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

thanks for the links, i've read john jackmans book (finished it last week) and it was good info, but im sitll confused about some things, i guess i actually have to do it in person to understand better.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

sorry to Rostronics, but does anyone know anywhere else I can get these lights(besides Ebay) right away? Just when I finally have money saved up to buy wallet friendly lights-everyone's out of stock!! Ah, the story of my life. . .

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Just got my Britek Kit! Wahoo. Unfortunately, I didn't realize the Heavy Duty stands were 36 inches long, won't fit in my Kata Maze-4 Lighting Bag. :-[

Everything, was received in working order, the only problem was that one of the Heavy Duty stands was missing, so hopefully, Rostronics will fix that problem.
