Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

was talking to tom just now...
currently they're out of the softboxes for the 1000w lights. he said it will be like 3 weeks before they get some more...just FYI.

NE way...i'm thinking about getting the dual powered 500/1k kit.

I'm thinking that 500w is good for inside or close knit areas (not too much difference from the 650w bulbs) <correct?>.

But mainly I'm thinking of this for the outside capabilities....
I know I can't emulate sunlight, ... but atleast I can make good lighting on subjects who are outside at night...and if i want shots in which I'm not too close.

However, I do want the focas nob.
He said that it is absent on the 500w/1kw models.
That's y it is cheaper than the 2 1kw models.

I asked him if it is safe to use an interconnected dimmer switch/knob with the 500/1kw model. He responded that he doesn't know and that others have inquired about it.

So I'm wondering what do ya'll think about this?
I'm thinking that I need 1kw b/c I don't know how much light 600w output. I think it is really cool that you can ctrl the focas on that model and at the same time use bulbs of lower wattages, however, is it wise/safe to get a 500/1kw with a dimmer knob/switch?

I hope someone understands what I'm trying to do? .. lol
I just want control over my lighting.

also...from what he told me, I infer that the focus knob just moves the bulb in and out of the reflector, so it just narrows the beam. Is this correct?

Oh well....just trying to get some controlled lighting.
All comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

Much thanx ;)

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

I don't like the idea of changing the color temp with a dimmer, but I'm new and a lot of people use dimmers. I don't know if it works with the Britek...

I do have 2 1000w that I still have to send back because they are defective after my first shoot. The focus just moves the bulb in and out like you state.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

There are cases where the exact color temperature is not a big deal... Heavely filtered lights (Party gels, lots of CTB...) sometimes can be dimmed without a problem...

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Okay, I called Tom and wanted to buy the 1500W 3 light kit. He said he'll upgrade the stands to the air cushion ones, a $6 upgrade. Should I still inquire about the 5% discount? He seemed like such a nice guy! but it's my hard earned money!

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

I've seen the regular stands, I'd definitely recommend upgrading. I haven't seen the air-cushioned ones, but they've got to be better than the cheap stands.

It'd be interesting to know if the 5% DVXUser discount is still active. Go ahead and ask - what do you have to lose?

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

I like the air-cushioned stands I got.

BTW, I haven't returned the bad lights yet, still super busy editing with a deadline...

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

I've got mostly Matthews stands so when I got the Britek Air-cushioned stand, my first thought was, "too light and flimsy", but as time went on, I realized that the heads are so light compared to a cast aluminium Pepper, that it evens out. Don't get me wrong, the Matthews stands are as tough as Reggie White, but loosen the knob without having a good grip and you likely end up with a sore finger and a damaged head.

Bottom line, the Britek air-cushioned stands are great for Britek heads. They are light to carry and quite well made.

Whoa, sweet deal.

Help me here guys... I'm a total newbie at this, but I was thinking about getting the 1500w three light kit (2 600s and 1 200), to give me the most versatility.

Is this overkill? Again, it seems that with the combination that kit offers, it'll give me a lot of flexibility.

Your thoughts...

For maximum flexibility, I would go to the Rostronics home site http://www.rostronics.com/products.asp?cat=27 and order individually from the items listed.

I would upgrade to the Air-cushioned light stands (+$18 for 3) and NOT order the 32" umbrella - trust me, you probably won't use it (-$18.50).

Because the round model 600 can take 500, 600 and 650W lamps, I would upgrade to two of those rather than the square ones in the kit (+$24 for 2) - but don't forget the softbox - and upgrade from the 200W to the 300W head (+$12 for one)

After DVXuser discount that's a net addition of only $32.

At the end of the ordering process, there's a place for typing in comments, which is where you can let Tom know that you also want a head case and a stand case as shown in the 1500w three light kit, since there is no way to order those separately. If Tom has any questions, he'll email you.

Cool, thanks for the advice. I just wanted to say that I really appreciate this website. Really helps fledglings like myself.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Do you guys find the focusing on the open heads very useful or can you live without it?

Also do you find that the fresnels more useful compared to the open non lensed lights ie are alot of situations where you wished you had fresnels? I'm thinking of starting up a light kit to get some practise in lighting mainly for indoors shooting.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Anyone had any troubles with their bulbs burning out immediately? I had my 650 running for 10 minutes then it just blacked out.
I let it cool and took out the bulb - totally burnt out.

10 MINUTES!

Sure. The ability to focus a fixture is almost always more useful in any situation. You've got a broad light and a spot light in one fixture. But you gets what you pay for. In the case of a fresnel, a high temperature, tempered glass fresnel lens giving you a more even spread of light over the width of the beam. On the other hand, a lot of us here have bought and use the Briteks. If it's for practise, or even some real shooting, you will probably be better off with the focussing models, which most of them have.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Hey guys, these lights seem to be a pretty sweet deal. One question though, what kind of bulbs do they take? Can you buy them from a local store or do you have to order them online only?

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Good question. Do they take those long and thin Totalight Bulbs, or the ones we see in Fresnel reflectors?

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Some take one lamp type, others take the other. My Britek 300 takes the same lamp as my 300W Peppers, so I'm guessing they're all standard lamps. I have no idea whether you can get them locally. Probably in ChiTown - I don't know about Taubkin's location. Having said that, lamps are almost always cheaper on the net.

*Bulbman*

And even then, they are probably going to be cheaper at Rostronics.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Not long enough. Some as little as 50 hours, so you better take care of them. The most important thing is to never touch a lamp with your bare fingers. Your fingers leave a small amount of oil on the lamp, which can cause the glass to heat up differentially the next time you use it and it will eventually break. It will definately shorten the life of the lamp. I keep a pair of cheap cotton gardening gloves in my kit just for that purpose ($1 at Ace hardware). If anyone accidentially touches the lamp with fingers, you can clean it off with isopropyl alcohol.
