Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Update:

Tom is great, and I talked to him about the HMIs.
He's going to call his parent company and manufacturing to see if they still have them. If they don't, he'll have to look at demand to see if he can get them to manufacture again. I told him if it was the same quality product and price, he'd get a lot of orders.

I also orders a bunch of lights...

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Yes I talked to Tom tonight and he can get some Daylights in if there is demand, and he also has one in stock.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

he will have 2 in by Monday.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Guys, keep in mind that the DayPhoto's are not an end-all solution.  They're noisy (electronic hum from the ballast and the light), they're big & heavy (that ballast weighs about seven thousand pounds, or it just seems to) and they're not focusable.  Plus they have a long warmup time (about 10 minutes) and a long minimum-burn time (at least 15 minutes) and a long wait-before-restrike time (about 10 minutes) and that limits the convenience. So while I think they're a great (even screaming) deal for the price, they're only a part of your lighting package, and not always the first light to reach for.

Also, there's a noticeable green spike in the color spectrum, so if you're mixing with other daylight sources you'll need some MinusGreen gel on the lights.

Also, I got the beefy beefy stands.  Eh.  Mediocre.  If you're buying 'em with the stands, get the beefy ones, but in my opinion they're still not very good, no match for Avenger or Matthews.

Can't comment on the softboxes, as mine came with CHIMERAS!  The guy who sold 'em upgraded the softboxes to being genuine Chimeras!

Anyway, great lights, but there are reasons why they're so inexpensive.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Yeah HMIS would be the last light I would buy when I was making a package.. they are good for throwing outside a window to add some more daylight, but you can do the same with some CTB and some 1k Tungstens.

But, i think if I had them I would always use them when I could.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

These HMI's are wonderful, but they're definitely not the most convenient light to use.  Just want to make sure nobody's thinking that this is the only light they need to buy.  HMI's have a place in a well-rounded light kit, and they have great advantages, but they have restrictions as well.

Much as I despise tungsten lights, they are easily the most convenient.  Fluorescents are my favorite, but there's no such thing as a hard fluorescent (well, actually I guess an HMI with an electronic ballast is sort of a hard fluorescent)...

Hey Jarred, do you think they could get the smaller DayPhotos?  There was supposed to be a 2500 and a 2000.  And BULBS!  Apparently nobody in the US carries DayPhoto bulbs, the OSRAM 400D/W.  Could Rostronics get replacement lamps?  That'd be *very handy*.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

yeah.. eggcrates can focus fluros pretty well but still wont make it a hard light.. I love them though. Just used my homeade unit last week and I couldnt of used anything else

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

That's a pimp set up. I've been here researching in these forums for a while...Do you ever post grabs or video Jarred??

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Not usually because most of my work is hired and owned by others.. meaning I dont have time to shoot alot of my own movies, but that top thing is :) .. was fun driving down the road with that thing attatched to the roof rack :)

heres what that light did though:

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

oops think I stepped on your post Phil

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

:D ha it's all good! I said:

Ahh...Gotcha ;) Cool grab!

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

heh heh.. yeah I saw your post there but I pressed edit yours instead of edit mine to add the grab :)

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

So, the next question is:

Can we round up enough interest here to justify Tom starting the manufacturing of more Dayphotos?

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

I talked to Tom today. It appears the big one will go for $1000 each, including tripod and softbox. He says that is still a great deal, and he's suddenly had a big demand! :D

He might only have two left. And I've ordered one. They might find a few more in the warehouse. If they see strong demand for more of these, they will start making them again.

I assume these would be pretty nice to shoot on talent in the outdoors, to make them "stick out"...

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

$1000 for an HMI with lamp, doors, softbox, ballast and stand is a screamingly good deal, about 1/4 what the next-lowest-priced HMI system is.

I'd still like to get ahold of some of the smaller ones.

I just shot some stuff with my 5000's, and there's definitely a noticeable green tint, you'll want some MinusGreen gel in there.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Dear Folks:

How sturdy is that softbox frame? Could you hang black fabric off it without it losing it's shape? Could you point it down over a subject and hang black fabric off the edges to flag light off the walls?

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

I haven't used the box they include with the DayPhoto's, but I've used their 32x32 softboxes that they include with the 1000w open-face light (not the current 1000w focusable)... and it's fairly sturdy. The rods in it are similar to the Chimera.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

I have the 650 with softbox, and it is quite sturdy, no problem flagging the way you describe.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

I talked to Tom at Rostronics today. He says the demand would have to be pretty high, 100+ for them to start manufacturing again :'(
