im debating whether or not to wait for the 500 kit to get bac in stock. Do you guys think the 1200 watt kit (barndoors/softbox) will be overkill for regular indoor shooting?
You can always bulb down to 500, 300W.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

i use a 600 and a 250 watt with softboxes indoors, and in small spaces it works fantastic. the 1000s would be good but once you start using that much light, you start to have to control things alot more.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

So i can use 300 watt bulbs in a 600 lamp and it'll be completely fine?

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Just got mine today! These things are great! Does anyone know of a good spot to get affordable storage cases? I'm going to be doing a bit of running around with the kit.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Any Local Photography store should have light bags...

Let me add: Professional Photography.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

they (rostronics) actually has a few hard sided soft bags that will hold 2 lights and accessories for $40.. it has wheels and a little pullup handle and is very nice.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Oh, that's great! I suppose Tom is that man for that?

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Hello all,

my 1200w (2x600) kit just arrived today. Looks great. Really nice features on the lights. I've been using various Lowel kits for years and these a much nicer, especially the barn doors. I'm not sure how well the plastic will hold up and I am thinking I should have gotten the better stands (I got the cheapies), but other than that they look great.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

yeah I have used them a bit now and the plastic is really nice because it cools down so fast. Its not really plastic though, its some form of carbon mix that is holding up very well.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Had occasion to use the Britek background system last week. Cheap flimsy stands holding an extending rod over which you drape a 12' wide backdrop. I was not impressed with the stands at all. The guy who brought the system ended up dropping one of the stands off his Magliner (maybe 2-foot drop) and it cracked the plastic and broke the base.

So I don't have any Britek stands, and don't plan on getting any, but I'd recommend against the cheapest stands.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

yeah.. i bought the "expensive" air cushioned ones from Rostronics for the hell of it and they still aren't that great.. I dont know if its just because I have used C-stands for so long or not, but I wouldnt put anything over the 250w on those stands. I just hate those tripod type stands in general.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

By plastic I meant the plastic on the stands and the threaded plastic for the tightners on the lights - not the lights themselves. I'm more concerned about stripping the threads.

So, anyone recommend some good (yet inexpensive) stands?

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

oh.. i see.

I cant recommend anything other than C stands.. they are only $100, and are the best thing since sliced bread you will ever get to hold little lights with.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

I agree, C stands are just the best. The big ones are heavy though, so if you do a lot of loading/unloading, you'll groan when it comes to loading the stands! :)

I'm looking to pick up more of the small 20" riser models.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

yeah for some reason I keep not buying the 20" ones and I rarely ever extend the 40" ones past the first stage.. thanks Barry I think i should do the same.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

I got the 20's mainly to use for things like holding a monitor platform, etc... but now I find myself reaching for them first almost every time! The 40's are nice and huge, you can boom a light like 13' in the air with 'em, but I don't do that very often. The 20's go up like 6', which is as high as I normally use for corporate/interview stuff, and they're *much* lighter. And less expensive.

I'm looking for some 20's with the mini base... I think those'd be ideal for general-purpose light stands to round out the kit.

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

your making me broke Barry :)

Re: Rostronics Lights deals for DVXuser members

Broke? This site is making me broke! If it wasn't for this site I wouldn't have found out about the Britek DayPhotos, and now I've tracked down two of the only ones in existence and mailed off a money order today... :o Plus an impending AT4073...

A245S? What is that... doesn't even show up on Bogenphoto.com's site! When it says "sliding base", are they talking about a rocky mountain leg, or a detachable turtle base? I've got enough Rocky Mountain gear, but if that's a removable turtle base for $105, I may have to get some...

I've got the 225's, and the 256's, I'm thinking about some 280's. Oooh, especially because the black one's are $10 less... just $89.95!
