Rokinon cine lenses arriving!

That's very interesting. The European version is Walimex, and the availability dates there are completely different than the dates given for the US Rokinons.

Walimex 35mm Sept 13 - - -Rokinon 35mm August 15
Walimex 8mm Sept 13 - - - -Rokinon 8mm July 15
Walimex 24mm August 30 - Rokinon 24mm Sept 15

And they have a set of six lenses (8, 14, 24, 35, 85mm) advertized for 2,499 euros including a pelican type case but its mixed cine and non-cine lenses.

US outlets sell them including B&H:

Sue them? Anybody can sue. Will Zeiss want to devote the resources to bring suit in a Chinese court with a look-and-feel case? I doubt that. Are they any good? I hope someone will buy one and report to us. Alas no budget either personally or through the publication for which I write to purchase one. And I honestly doubt that they would send me a review unit. I can always try, though ;)

Rokinon 35mm Cine T1.5

I realize that this is the F3 board and I do not have an F3 but, this thread seems to be more about the Rokinon Cine lenses, so I am posting a capture that I just did with my AF100 and the Rokinon Cine 35mm T1.5 I just received about half an hour ago.

I think the image is beautiful and am VERY pleased that I took a chance on this lens.

they are "slip overs" no doubting that, and they aren't claiming they are anything but that. There's no lie in their advertising. I think its a nice alternative to a duclos upgrade. Honestly having a whole enclosure around the lens helps protect it more for harsher treatment than say a single ring around an expensive Zeiss prime.

We all know how gear gets its scratches on set, this is not only a machined gear, but something to protect the body of the lens. From the looks of it, you can always take the set screws out and have a regular zeiss lens if you'd want.

I like the idea a lot, and it allows you to have standard size eequipment usage. So yeah its a slip on, but so is duclos and that process doesn't give you extra protection or a beefier body, or that look that clients like (which is very important, and whoever says its not is just kidding themselves).

The best thing about it, is we KNOW its a real zeiss lens in there, so theres no quality problems for the glass. I hope to see them come out with the wider ends soon, thats a nice option. Better glass/name than the Rokinons.

Seems like Rokinon is the cheapest but nicest glass in the 500-700 range per lens, then these for around 1,100-2000 a lens. Finally "affordable" cine lenses. Do they breath, possibly, but heck for these prices you cant be so picky.

I saw the Rokinon lenses performing quite well and even slightly sharper in some tests against nikon and sigma lenses, so quality is up there with them too.

With multi color background lights you really can't tell. We need black and white charts with controlled white lights to see how much CA. My 35mm cine is supposed to arrive today. I plan on a comparison between that and the Nikon 35mm F1.4.

I don't doubt the Rokinon has some CA wide open. I know the Nikon has some. (Probably all lenses have some at some setting.) The question is, how much? And, is it only in the out of focus areas?

A: My lenses don't get scratched on set or in the field. I'm very careful with my gear! Some of my lenses are over 40 years old and still look new.

B: My clients could care less how the exterior of my lenses look. What's important is the look they deliver! And no, I'm not kidding myself.

For what I´ve seen the 35mm 1.4 is superb. These are exciting news, these lenses perform really well and the prices are great. I keep saying the Zeiss are a ripoff. Glad to be proven. Now we just need a 50mm and a 135.

Maybe it's just me, but that image looks too soft to my eye.

When looking for CA you want to look for Green/magenta fringing on high contrast edges right before and after the plane of focus. Try looking at a chart, or even a bright lampshade or windowsill edge. A piece of bubble wrap looked horrible on a Zeiss 35mm ZF @ 1.4 . It will be worst wide open of course.

Hi folks,

I've just received my Walimex 35mm/T1.5 today !

Mounted it directly on my FS700 and ran the camera a few minutes, so far so good but I need more time to test it seriously.

The built quality is VERY good, de-clicked iris is nice and focus ring is smooth but the focus range seems a bit short to me and it's a bit out of focus at infinite, you have to go back just one or two milimeter to focus correctly.

Focus is breathing a bit but it's not overkill.

Image quality seems very good too but I only have my LOMO primes to compare to.

Will try to find some time to shoot something and post it on Vimeo.

Cheers.

Rokinon just announced that the 85mm cine lens will be out at the end of November. Hopefully that's because they are redesigning the front end to be the same diameter as the other lenses. (The 24mm and 35mm lenses have a 77mm filter thread and the 85mm stills lens has a 72mm filter thread.) A little redesigning and retooling are required.
