GH5 Rokinon cine lenes on M4/3

I'm looking to try out some of the Rokinon cine lenses on the GH5s. While I can get them in a native M43 mount, I'm wondering about getting the EF mount and a speed booster adapter. The lenses are fast so that's not a problem but the FOV will be different and also I'm wondering about future proofing in case I change cameras. Has anyone gone through this process of thought about it?

I'd recommend getting the Rokinons in EF mount. Speedbooster or not you are opening yourself up to a larger range of cameras than if you got the Rokinons in m43. I have a set of Veydras, and I love them, but the worst thing is the limited range of cameras I can put them on.

got the rok's 6 lens EF set and speedbooster XL for GH4. I like them a lot, but I LOVE the Sigma's look more. Both have their place.
I got the 14mm 3.1 rok, but maybe should have gotten the 16mm 2.8 instead. No complaints, but I have not shot much of anything on them for real yet. I can answer questions if needed

I also recommend not going m4/3rds mount. I worked with Nikons on the job before retiring, shot with Canon APS-C from 2004 - 2010 before converting to m4/3rdx format. Adapting a couple of leftover Nikkor (F mount) lenses to the Canons took a simple ring adapter, was going to work in Manual anyway.

So I ordered a couple of Rokinon Cine DS lenses, the 24mm and 50mm in Nikon F mount. The Nikon F to m4/3 focal reducers and adapters I already had on hand worked, The focal reducers give me effectively 4 focal lengths with the two lenses, and initial testing looks like what I was looking for. They are plenty sharp with without super razor edge our native lenses have. By ordering in Nikon F mount I'm covered if I switch systems to either Nikon or Canon again. They will fit directly on Nikon bodies, a simple ring "dumb" adapter mounts them on Canon.

The Veydras work with E mount, X mount, C mount and m43 : meaning they’re perfect for P4K, X-H1, GH5s and Sony a6*** series or cropped a7*. If they were full frame, they would be much larger, heavier and more expensive. As it is, they were a super bargain, costing much less than any comparable cinema lenses and have excellent build quality. $3,200 or whatever when they were new for a set of three or four was a bargain. And T2.2 is more than fast enough for most jobs. Optically, they will be superior to Rokinon. Or am I wrong?

I never remember any additional mounts but the E mount being released for the Veydras (and a limited selection of the lenses are compatible) but I could be wrong. Also, I'm not sure what else you are getting at here? I never said they were too slow, too small, etc. On the contrary, I thoroughly love my veydras and they are a rock solid investment. My "Only" complaint is the limited mount selection. I would love to be able to grab an EVA1, UMP, etc and throw these on the end of it.

OP asked about buying Rokinon in EF or M43 mount. I merely stated he will probably get more mileage out of the EF mount vs m43 mount and used Veydras as my case.

EDIT: I googled and I guess they did release an X mount and C mount, but honestly these don't mean a whole lot to me personally.

I'm definitely going the EF route - thx for the comments guys. maybe a mix of Rokinon & Samyang but I'll try the 50 & 85 out before I leap in

You might look into some old Nikkor glass instead and add follow focus gears. They’re inexpensive and could very well be optically superior.

Of most of the video I've seen with Rokinon/Samyang, the good Nikon lenses will probably out perform. Even a lot of the old Canon FD and maybe FL mount lenses will be at least as good as and you can get 50f1.2 and 85f1.4.

Too bad Veydra has shut down, they had a great product and the Fuji XT3 would have only opened more business for them.

One other note about Canon FD and FL, you can buy user changed mounts to EF from two places in the Americas. EdMika is back to making mounts out of resin, and FDtoEF is making them out of anodized aluminum. Most of my lenses are FDtoEF, but I just received a mount for my 200f2.8 from EdMika (now in Canada) that I'll be installing in the next few days. Between both companies about the entire range of desirable FL and FD lenses can be upgraded to EF. No you don't get any electronic anything, but you don't get that with the Rokinon/Samyang either (unless they have updated them).

Interesting. Do you still lose about a stop of light when going from FD to EF? I know the adapter from a few years ago had to have glass in the middle and it was tricky back then if shooting at faster apertures.

There is nomenclature that you need to be aware of, New FD, nFD or FDn, chrome nose vs. regular breach lock, etc. For the nFD stuff I like the metal mounts best, bt the resin are supposed to be just as good. But Marty (FDtoEF) doesn't have all the older SSC FD lenses covered so you will need to go with the EdMika mounts for those. And things like the 200f2.8 have v1 and v2 versions, with v2 being internal focus which would be much nicer, mine is the v1 and it extends more than 2 inches from close to far.

Kind of far off topic, and you'll find that you won't be saving money by building an FD set of lenses over buying the Rokinon/Samyang, but still interesting to some people.

Yes, as long as the m43 to EF adapter that you buy is correct. The speed boosters all have a way of adjusting the internal lens, so you can make it work there as well. Once I made sure that my speed booster and my passive adapter were correct, I have not had issues with any of these different mounts. Hopefully that won't change with the single EdMika mount that I'll be using.

One other thing about the breach lock (twist the locking collar) FD lenses, they are pretty much an all metal construction! Shoot for the SSC versions which have the most modern coatings. They are just a lot more durable, and take a focus ring better due to the metal barrel.

Also note that pretty much all EF mount lenses will rock against the locking pin in the mount, that's why some companies made a positive locking EF mount, I have not seen an adapter with this feature yet but it is important.

I just got my 200f2.8 swapped... I'm not entirely happy with this mount from Edmika. There is enough slop in the iris mechanism to make 1/3 stop changes impossible and not sure how accurate anything other than f2.8 or f32 will be now. Haven't mounted it to a camera yet, but I'm guessing infinity is just fine. It is difficult to definitively say that this will be a problem with all of this style mount or not, but based on this single sample it is hard to recommend for any lens that has a choice between the two different styles. Wish I had a larger sample size of lenses converted, but I'm not going to spend that kind of money right now just for a test. The very first FDtoEF mount I bought went on perfectly and worked correctly with no messing around, and all of them since have been the same for me.

I may try a few things to see if I can make this Edmika mount work better, I just thought of an idea that might help, but I'll need to make a shim. And my shim material is not here so it will wait a few days.

to the above... ^^^ ... TO ME - and I can't disclaimer this enough: TO ME, the above is exactly why I bought the Rokinon set: Plug on and go. I'm not a build out guy, I want to get something decent and get out and shoot, and not worry about shimming etc. Guess I'm not REALLY a camera guy, but I went Rokinon for the affordable set I did NOT have to futz with AT ALL. Just grab and shoot. :)

And that is a perfectly good reason to go with what you can afford. You won't save money with FD lenses and mount changes, and depending on the lens, you just won't save money over a Rokinon/Samyang lens. Those DS series lenses have the mount you want, gears installed, etc., so as you say, no messing around.
