Rokinon 85mm Cine T1.5 photos and will add updates

The Rokinon 85mm is confirmed to be T1.5. Confirmed for an end of November release. Photos below indicate it has the same long focus throw (160 ish degrees).

No word on the external diameter or filter size yet. No word on price. I'm hoping it will remain within $50 of the non-cine.

And I notice its short, kind of like the 24mm. The 50mm will probably be around the same size.

Could someone tell me which way the focus? Is it like the Nikon mount Zeiss ZFs that focus backwards?

The Nikon mount focus like Nikons (backwards to everyone else). The Canon & Sony mounts focus the normal way.

I really think the direction of focus is almost a non-issue for cinema work. Most decent modern follow focuses are reversable. My FF certainly isn't expensive, but I simply pop the gear off the gear box, snap it on the other side of the gear box and move the FF an inch down the rails. Voila, it turns the other direction.

Yes, old FF's and some poorly thought out ones don't reverse, but we shouldn't be supporting those. Realistically there are some odd size and shape lenses that you really MUST have a reversable FF just to get in to use it.

But as Simon said the Nikons focus the Nikon way so that if you're using other Nikon lenses they will all go the same direction, and the Canons go the Canon way. There is no right or wrong way to focus if the FF goes left or right as needed.

The price of each lens will vary because some lenses have a lot more parts than others. The 35mm is nearly twice as much as the 8mm, but its also twice as big and more difficult to make. It will be interesting to see on the 50mm since a 50mm is generally fairly easy to make, but if they go for a really high speed like F1.2 it will cost more. Also, they'll need to recapture the R&D on the 50mm.

Rokinon informed me that the 85mm Cine will have a 72mm filter thread. That means the external diameter will be about 1/4" smaller than the 35mm or 24mm. I'm using a Nun's knickers so it won't make any difference to me. (Nun's knickers are a nylon cloth donut with elastic on each side to adjust for different sizes. IMO much better than the foam donut system. I removed the plastic sleeve entirely from the NK.)

A little cheaper here:

If you're using a foam donut on your matte box you'll have to decide if 1/8" extra clearance on each side of the lens makes a difference to you to change donuts with the lens change. I'm betting it won't.

do these lenses have filter threads?

Yes, they all do except the 8mm and 14mm. Those two have bulbous front lenses and such a wide angle that no filter would ever work. The 24mm and 35mm have 77mm threads and the 85mm is stated as 72mm threads.

So for those of use using a variable ND filter and rubber lens hood we just need a 72-77mm step up ring. No biggie, but it would have been cool if they could have standardized the front end (like Duclos manages to do with the Samyang conversions).

True, but a fully converted Duclos 11-16 runs $3,500. :) I had asked if they would make them all the same diameter, but no luck. As you say a 72-77mm step up ring will fix it for about $2.

I saw that Sergey, a Russian Lomo technician is selling converted Tokina 11-16's with three changable mounts (Nikon, Canon and PL) already colunated (however you spell that) for $3,300 plus shipping. Like the Duclos version his has an aperture ring, an 80mm diameter and three gears.

I have ordered this 85mm at Foto-Walser in Germany, it should arrive home next week.

Ordered it with an E-Mount like my 24 and 35mm to go directly on my FS700.

Next is to find some time to test it and post results on the forum.

Cheers,
Stephane.

Yeah, ordered the Nikon mount some time ago and it hasn't shipped yet either, but I'm told it will be very soon.

I have the still lens versions. Going to have duclos mod them. Decent lenses great price. Can't beat em for speed/size.

I'm waiting on mine and it should turn up this week. It will be interesting to use this on my F3 and see how it compares to the other T-primes from Korea. I do hope there are other manufactures that picks this up and start putting out cine versions at a low cost. With the prices on these Rokinon/Samyang lenses I see nothing wrong with them at all. Own these and rent PL glass is the way to go.
