Roger Clemens Testimony....

The average American's consumption of professional sports is a sickness in American society. In the grand scheme of life, sports mean nothing and are merely mindless diversion for millions of people that should be doing things to better us as a society.

Play sports? Great, gets you off of your fat rear, I have no problem with that, it's a healthy thing to indulge in. But spend time, money, effort and attention watching spoiled uber-rich corrupt athletes play games that don't improve life for anyone except themselves? Why?

In the grand scheme of life. That could be said for more or less EVERYTHING.

Something tells me you don't play sports. :undecided

No need to bag on sports as a whole.

Dude is as bad as Bonds; Andy and Chuck have both come forward and said 'Yeah, I did it ...'. But mysteriously, Roger is the only one of the bunch who is innocent.

Thats just it. Those guys careers won't be tarnished completely, at least they admitted it, told the truth and are moving on, like Giambi did a few years ago. That's why Clemens not admitting to it makes it all that more stranger, unless he actually is innocent.

Hey, what about us Canadians? Don't single us out. :)

Because it's very entertaining. There is the thrill of not knowing what the outcome is going to be, that's why you watch. The anticipation for a big game in itself is awesome.

No need to bag on sports as a whole.

Yeah, most sports are awesome except mabye Tennis and Golf.:)

Love tennis.

Agassi / Sampras
Nadal / Federer
Connors / Mac

But I play too so there's an appreciation level. I can't comment (Must resist) on golf.

I love sports; from youth to pro.

I was just screwing around with the Tennis and Golf.

Yeah, I played Tennis when I was a kid, not much though and love playing Golf.

Same can be said for watching movies.

is anyone else just completely tired of the whole steroids issue? it looks like most players juiced, but what difference does it really make? test them to try to prevent cheating in the future and move on.

I disagree. There are lots of worthwhile activities that we all could be doing that would make our society and country much better, stronger, more unified, more peaceable and more fair.

Didn't you read my post carefully? I think that playing sports is great. It gives fat assed Americans some much needed exercise and fewer of us drop dead of heart disease. I played AYSO as kid, was in cross country in high school but no, never a big team sports fan. I have coached my son's basketball team, baseball team, I have nothing against sports, especially for kids. It promotes exercise, team work, responsibility and bunch of other good things.

My problem isn't with sports, it's with the sports "machine" and the ridiculous amount of time, money, effort, hoopla, hype that go into it. I was on the elliptical at the gym this morning and each one of the machines has a television tuned in to ESPN. I don't watch television so I have a true outsiders perception of what is shown. That's why I commented that sports mean nothing, because I truly believe that. In this country, it is a multi-billion dollar enterprise, which is insane. It amazes me that so many grown and supposedly mature adults have so much of their lives invested in cheering for uniforms for a rotating, overpaid, spoiled rock stars. As Jerry Seinfeld says, "we cheer for the uniform today, not the athlete".

I think that there was a time when mass worship at the altar of sports made more sense for society (coming out of the Depression, WWII, etc.), but from what I see today, professional sports seem as worthless as most of what is shown on tv. Mass distraction from what is important and what is really going on in the world. While Americans are watching their sports, there are a myriad of things occuring that affect each of our lives in much more profound and significant ways.

No hard feelings, just wanted to clarify my belief. I'm not going to convince anyone to believe what I do, I am just chiming in since the thread subject seemed to be along similar lines.

Best,

Dan

I can agree, too much of anything can be bad. And yes, there are too many obsessed sports junkies sitting on their tails.

I see your point. : )

Yup, same could be said about movies, actors and the money that is spent on them.

I totally agree. If you want a scary read about what is happening in our society and why, read "The Entertainment Economy" by Michael Wolf http://tinyurl.com/24m8f8

IMHO, even though I am part of the machine that produces some of it, Americans are way too entertained. That's almost all we care about as a society. As we all know, mass entertainment is dumb and since it has become more and more predominant in American society, Americans are becoming more and more anesthetized to reality and are statistically becoming dumber. We have also sold off most of our industries, real estate and resources to smarter foreign investors while we continue to think that we have cornered the entertainment market for the world, which is incredibly short-sighted and naive to think that we will continue to own that market. Ask any fan of world cinema if American films and television will continue to dominate the world's media markets.

I couldn't agree more with you. Most movies are just product, there is very little art left to mix in with the commerce. I don't feel movies should be pure art, films have always had an uneasy truce between art and commerce but look what we see in theaters and on DVD these days. Yes, there have always been lousy movies but when Hollywood was busy adapting it's best output from novels, theater and literature, it seemed that the ratio of great films vs. filler was much better.

What sells more than film, video games? All of our most siginificant industries seem to be based upon mindless entertainment.

Best,

Dan

Baseball and all other american sports should look to adopt the testing procedures on International sports such as European Football (Soccer) and the Olympics. Players are tested randomly and any failed test is an automatic Ban for two years.

As for sports in general, people need entertainment and sports fills that need. Whether people have too much entertainment is another matter all together but no-one in the world can be unselfish and reflective of world-issues 100% of the time. Sport and other forms of entertainment fill that little extra break that people need.

What I would agree with you though is the sick nature of the business today. Today we are living in a Marketing obsessed society were everything is a dollar and the way people look at things is how to maximize that dollar return. But that occurs in every facet of our lives.

there's a difference between sports, sportsmanship, and professional sports.

pro sports is entertainment business, not a sport, and athletes are high priced celebs just like actors. the business can choose to clean up its act or not and let the box office vote. but to get the govt involved is ridiculous. I bet Hollywood would not want Congress investigating the movie industry drug use.

The only reason the government is allowed to meddle in baseball is because MLB has an anti-trust exemption. I still wish they'd butt out, but that's the legal justification. Sorry if someone else already said this.

I can't believe these morons are wasting time on this when our entire financial system looks like it's about to start unraveling at the seams in a deflationary spiral of credit destruction, i.e. Depression II.

I'm just totally speechless.

What authority does congress really have to have a hearing about somebody using steroids? I'm just failing to see why baseball has anything to do with our government. Just one more f%$!ing thing our government is putting their hand in and needs to get out of.

Go fix something important already, and stop wasting my time and tax money on something that has nothing to do with anything. This is exactly why our country is so f*$%#! up right now.
