C100: Rode Videomic Go

It is supposed to plug into any cameras exisiting 3.5mm microphone jack, even a GoPro. So it should work.

Its very ugly with the bright red :(

I'd give it ugly if it sounds good. "Plug-in power required (330 uA @ 2.5 V)" if the C100's 3.5mm mic jack doesn't supply the power, it won't work though.

You could possibly use one of these:

But it's not very elegant.

Even devices such as the humble Zoom H1 have the '2 volt tickle' supplied on their 3.5mm input jacks, so I'm not quite sure what Canon were thinking when they put a very servicable and useful 3.5mm jack on the C100 body, then failed to actually supply power to it. Not exactly fit for purpose.

Hey Darren - your parrot beats my chickens... but is he tax deductible?

Thanks for the better exposition on that 'thingy' - I love your L-bracket to socket thing, too. Hopefully all one wants to get a guide track for dual system sound.

In this case the supercardioid RODE VideoMic Pro is a better choice. Uses a 9V battery for to 70 hours of operation. I have this one and it really sounds great but I use it with a GH3 mostly. In fact I haven't tried it yet on the C100. Only thing I don't like about it is the rubber bands tend to slip off the mount when it's in my camera bag. I haven't had this issue when it's on the camera. I never lost one yet but always have to check to make sure they are all attached. It's twice as expensive as the VideoMic Go.

Here is a sample of the performance of the VideoMic Pro. I was testing out the GH3. All audio was captured with the VidoMic Pro.

Hey Eric, that's good stuff, the GH's really hold their own. Is your GH3 hacked? and I love the over cranked footage, wish Canon would throw us a bone and "release the Kraken" on the C100.

I use a Sennheiser MKE-400. It's small and light, doesn't have rubber bands to break. Battery (AAA) lasts ~300 hrs. It's part of a Black Friday sale at B&H (ends today) for only $100.

You can get decent b-roll sound with it or use it as a reference mic for better sound when syncing in post.
That looks good. Wonder how good it sounds. Solves the power issue at a good price.

Thanks! I didn't use a hack. it's a great little camera as is. Overcranking looks very good and I wish I could get 60fps at 1080 on either cinema EOS cameras.

Release the Kraken!!
