Rode NTG4 and NTG4+ Review

Thanks Ty. I am curious to see how the NTG-4 compares to the Sennheiser MKE600, as they are about the same price and seem to have similar characteristics.

That's a pretty cluttered price point at the moment. I think AT has at least one shotgun in the pack.

Rehards,

Ty

Another vote for a MKE600 comparison, although I think the MKE600 allows more of the lower end in comparison to the NTG4 - some people call the MKE600 "boomy".

I am not an audiophile, but as a videophile I work with audio all the time. I'd say my "discerning" ear is middle of the road. With that disclaimer..

I have worked with the ME66 an AT4037a shotguns extensively in the past. I picked up the NTG4+ after much debate and without much info on the web.

I have been very pleased with the NTG4+, the sound quality sounds cleaner and just flat out better (to my ears at least) than either of the mics I mentioned above. I have been running it with Low pass & high boost enabled in a zepplin and dead cat exclusively for my tests but this is fitting my needs very well.

As far as the battery, I know that freaks some people out - but I've left it on without charging multiple days in a row for shoots and it's still green (it gives different colors when you are at 20 hours and 10 hours remaining and I haven't even hit that yet). [And YES guys, I have 2 backup mics and phantom power available so I am not winging it on risking a shoot - just testing the mic]. Seeing as how it can charge to 80% in just over an hour off a little USB battery pack or any USB charging port, this works a lot better for me personally than AA or AAA batteries.

All in all, definitely happy with the purchase. No complaints.

I'd like to upgrade and the Sennheiser ME66 was the model recommended by a friend.

So what did you do to p*ss-off your friend ? :)

The ME66 would be my last pic for a shotgun mic. I've always found it overly "bright" and lacking in the lower end. ( I think some people like it because it puts out a very hot signal which works well with low end gear )

I record sound with a Tascam DR-05, boosted by a JuicedLink CX211 and usually use my NTG2 or my Audio-Techinca MB4k (mostly vocal mic). The MB4K performs quite well with the help of the JuicedLink.
I've got a couple clean dialog tracks with that setup.

But as you say, it (ME66) probably "pops-up" in discussion because of the hotter signal.

I've also used the MKE600 and while not a big audio buff I don't notice the NTG4+ being of any better or worse quality. Actually if anything, I might prefer the NTG4+ slightly more.

Per above: Not your best move!

NTG3, yes. NTG4, yes, MKH50 or 60, yes.

Ty Ford
