Robert Rodriguez and the Red?

BLUESPIDER

If I was designing a Revoluationary camera, one of the first people I would contact would be him...Com'on this guy never wants to go back to film.

So Jim, I know you know something.... What are his thoughts? :costumed-smiley-047

Hey There Bluespider, Wassssssssup

I Iam The Rodiguez Impersonator, You Are Absolutely Right Jim Please Contact Him.

Oh And Steve Mullen, He Has Contributed Greatly And Has A Great Cinematography Book

Jim Cameron gave a keynote at NAB about Digital Cinema and 3D. Has he shown any interest? I know he's devised his own cameras (based on existing ones) for his 3D stuff, but was wondering if something like this may get his attention.

Well, since Jim Jannard was on the board the other day (might have been this one, might have been dvinfo, can't remember), asking about stereo seperation distances in order to make body mods, it could be that he's been talking to Cameron already...DONT take this as gospel, its just speculation.... Out of hand internet rumors are born of such stuff.

He's 82, but he told me that he shot something on digibeta last year and he was disappointed only by the low res transfer...

It was the CML 2k-444 board...(cinematography.net)

You heard it here first, folks! Red will do 3D!!! JOHN ALLARDICE HAS CONFIRMED!!!! :)

And all in the one little camera too! This truly is a revolution, 3D from one single camera using one lens but recording a stereoscopic image. The Genius that is RED!

How far do you think we can make this go? :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

It's quite amazing how one little factoid gets turned into unfounded, ignorant speculation.

To follow up on Greg's post, RED is doing research on 3D possibilities, but RED has made no official statement about whether or not the RED One camera system will support 3D production. It's fun to speculate, but until RED makes a statement about RED's potential or proposed support for 3D production, we are merely speculating. As Jim Jannard and Ted Schilowitz have stated, the RED One camera system is in development and the overall specs for the camera have not been finalized (see my interview with Jim Jannard). Part of the buzz of a forum is to compare notes and ideas, but we need to temper that with the reality that the specs of the camera are not finalized until RED confirms they have been finalized. I think it would be a good move by RED to support 3D production at some point, but that will be their choice if and when they will or won't. Let's wait and see...

One byproduct of the "user input during the development process" approach is user assumption that everything that is discussed or investigated will make it into the end product. That's obviously not the case. RED will be a real progressive camera released at an excellent price point, but to see if capabilities like 3D have made the "cut", we'll just have to wait until RED says so. Of note, yesterday on a thread in the RED forum at DV Info Net, Jim Jannard stated that RED will provide 4K footage and complete detailed specs in the Fall. The thing is- unless they create some incredibly new technology- there's not really a switch to throw to 'support 3D.' All current 3D camera systems are simply two standard cameras optically linked together and typically by a third party. So, if you want to shoot 3D with Red, simple- buy two.

It may be possible to engineer a 3D system that does not require two cameras. I'm certainly not speculating that is the case here. If you know that 3D is going to be one potential workflow, and it will involve the use of two cameras optically linked, the form factor and ergonomics of the cameras may be modified to accomodate that potential. In chacking out the James Cameron 3D system, on display at the Fujinon booth at NAB, beyond the custom cine-zoom lenses fabricated by Fujinon, the cameras were modified on their facing sides to be able to place them closer - thus helping achieve the 3D optical properties desired.

i recently saw some test of a sort of 3d which is done within the lens (does not have 2 lens or 2 camera) some thing is done with the iris and moving the image plane ? i belive Jim C may have the use rights for use in theatrical films .. somebody else has rights for TV ..and somebody has rights to use for animation ..

I think you're referring to this: "V3™ Moving Optical Element device allows conventional video production cameras to shoot images so they appear 3-dimensional when viewed on virtually any standard image display such as TV, film or video projector, or computer monitor. Parallax scanning incorporates parallax over time and works by moving single imaging view through positions of parallax at specific rate. Lens device is compatible with virtually any conventional camera, and requires no change to production techniques."

From the demos I have seen there is a slight depth enhancement, but it's not stereoscopic 3D by any means. And there is some horizontal instability of the image as it rapidly switches between the alternating left and right parallax views. It's sort of like rapidly opening and closing one's left and right eyes. The effect is at first kind of fun, but ultimately I find it a bit annoying. This system has been kicking around in various forms for years and has recently been refined by Angeniuex, but has not caught on because the enhancement is just not sufficient to create any kind of excitement.

Jim Cameron is NOT using this system for his 3D projects. He's using a variety of custom camera rigs built by Vince Pace that are based on Sony 950s. They're dual camera head rigs, i.e. a separate camera head for each of the left and right views.

Some 35mm film cameras are capable of 3D using a single camera and a special 3D lens that captures discrete left and right views. The images are stacked on a single, split 4-perf 35mm frame (basically two perfs high each.) So there are already examples of a single camera body being used for 3D, but an optical system specifically designed to capture discrete left and right views is necessary. The principles of stereo photography are quite simple and there are lots of ways to build a camera to capture stereo. Execution is everything. A single camera does, however, significantly restrict the adjustments one can make to convergence and interocular. And a big stereoscopic 3D optical system required for single camera stereo system would rapidly cancel out the size/weight benefits of RED.

I was primarily responding the the ill-informed speculation that because RED is exploring 3D they have automatically developed the means to simply "flip a switch" to use the RED ONE for 3D (as NoahK so adapted described it). When things like that are said, they tend to be repeated by those who want to believe it. I prefer to keep things a little more real. There's enough misinformation floating around, don't you think?
