Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Agree with you but this is not an action movie .

Technically it's not, but it's a novelty for a movie of this budget to not be more action oriented. It's certainly in the sci-fi thriller genre for most of its running time, but that last 20 minutes is definitely large scale action filmmaking so it's kind of a hybrid.

Forgot the sci-fi part but its far from an Action movie. Thrillers can have action sequences to. Like you said most of it is Sci-Fi thriller . Doesnt that make it a Sci-fi Thriller movie :) ?
If you call it an action movie...Im starting to think Fast-Five, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard etc or is that just my interpretation of an Action Movie.
On another note I'm glad to hear its doing well at the box office. So if there's a chance for a sequel it might be..... who knows haha !

I guess my point is that there's a rhythm to standard issue Hollywood films that demands a set piece of some kind every ten minutes, even in thrillers and comedies, a tendency that often strangles the characters to death, turning them into 2 dimensional figures. Rise seemed to break that mold and be interested purely in building up Caesar as a character for the first 2/3. Common wisdom is that modern audiences don't have the patience for that, so this film is a curious anomaly.

Which makes its a pure thriller indeed imo. The pacing is very well done not to rushed but like I mentioned earlier the editing is well done. And I think that is the tool they used to keep our attention. On the third act When Ceasar does that thing..there's a hard cut . He does that thing once and I had expected him to repeat it right away; cause that's what we as humans would do but to keep it believable there was hard cut to the son's face ( kid from the primate facility) And the act is still in the viewers mind..

We were all shocked in the theatre...that was a suprise for everyone.

BTW isnt this movie coming from Weta Digital they like to produce things that arent the norm.

Loved it.

Very happy that they went with a slower paced format, as opposed to all action, all the time. It was very effective in being a morality tale, but not as heavy handed as it could have been.

Serkis is bloody amazing.

Just came back from seeing it. Had to wipe my face twice. Andy Serkis is the only reason there was any emotional connection in this entire film. Well done sir. ( graphic artists as well )

Aggravatingly slow through the first hour; many, many stolen bases when the action got going. (Being super-intelligent doesn't mean you know how do something you've never seen before, like ride a horse.)

Took care of the major problem I had with the overall "rise" premise. (Though still left a glaring one.)

Many, many references to the original movie; a goldmine for easter egg hunters. More than a few images lifted from the book.

I suppose with the setup, they could make the next one a straight-up remake of the original film with very little change.

Maybe lack of trained horsemanship is compensated by having a second pair of hands with which to hang on...

The CGI lost me.

Take this story (hold the (snickers) DOCTOR Cheech Franco), and shake it up with Rick Baker's bee-yoo-tyful makeup from Burton's attempt, and we got's something special.

Enjoyment-wise I preferred Attack the Block.

It's not just his size, it's the stance that was too anthropomorphic. Also, his eyes had too much white sclera showing which made him appear more human. At least they explained the reason for the unusual iris color. Since he wasn't some sort of hybrid the overall look didn't make sense. I think that a regular looking chimp with Caesar's intelligence and behavior is way more disturbing than what was portrayed in the movie.
However, I enjoyed the movie with all of its flaws such as cookie cutter bad guys. I look forward to the next one. Anything will be nice to help remove the memory of the Burton apes mess. I recently caught it again for a few minutes on cable. Yikes, what the hell was he thinking? The beautiful makeup couldn't begin to save it.
