FEATURE: Rise of the Beast-the new feature from STARS Pictures

I have to say, being my own IT guy is brutal, but if you don't have the money to pay someone, doing it yourself is a good option. In any event, I don't have to use thumb drives, hard drives, CDs or DVDs anymore to move stuff around. I love it! And since my production rigs stay off the internet, I don't have to worry about hackers or anything.

Have to get a new harddrive, but so far no net working needed yet aside from sometimes hooking up my drive from my laptop G4 to my desktop G5. Glad to see everything is working out good for you on that end.

I was always taught that being multifaceted was a good thing, means when your on the job if they need you to do something else.. guess what? you can.
Exactly!

Have you thought about reapplying to kick starter not that you have footage done?
That's a good idea. I'll need to cut a footage only teaser but it should work.

I should add, I'm really liking having two networked computers right now. My edit station is converting the offlines for cutting and I'm working on music on the other computer. I'm sold. When you choose to wear as many hats as I do, two or three computers is the way to go.

We shot for two hours today and got a lot done! We filmed the greenscreen shot of Charles to add him into the shot with the group in the mountains. Then we hit up downtown Spokane and shot the Leap Crew's shots of the two scenes we had left outside. We finished off at my apartment getting some shots of the Crew catching the backpack Shane throws and running towards the car they'll break into. Being the editor and the dp, it allowed us to move extremely quick and still get quality work.

Here's a new effects slap comp:

I need to relight Jame's face and roto out his arm, but the shot is going to work! =)

Nice GS moves. Wouldn't it be easier to darken him versus relighting her? Just curious.

I finally got around to burning a DVD of what we've shot so far. Rather than going through the hassle of bringing everything online, I just rendered my offline. Even at VHS resolution, it looks really good! Watching it on my TV has really helped show me some of the weaker areas that I can fix with editing. Even in it's uncorrected and low rez state, I think the movie still looks ten times better than the last one. I might even call it beautiful.
Side note-Almost burned down my place last night when some oil I was heating up for cooking caught on fire. I ended up having to use the fire extinguisher so now I have a wonderful yellow dust all over my apartment. I now get to clean every nook and crannie in this place, including my computers. At least no damage was done to the apartment.

Good stuff. I love looking at the footage. When I've got enough together to make something work.

Glad you are liking the footage! I hope it all turns out as good and you have no more fires!
Me too!

I hear ya. Running camera and editing are my favorite parts of filmmaking but it sucks that since I've kept up with the editing, I have nothing to edit when I'm not filming. Part of me wants to start on the effects, but I know I should wait until I have picture lock. Instead I've been keeping busy testing out the effects, seeing if the concepts work.

Day 21 of filming.
I had a meeting this morning with one of our locally owned Russian stores. Basically, they said we could film there as long as I put the owner’s 17 year old son in the picture, even if it’s just a small role. I’ll make him the younger brother of the girl that runs the store where the Leap crew gets supplies. Since I’m currently without a car, I had a half hour bike ride to get to the store, but it paid off. The owners were really cool and even gave me a ride back to my place after. I love my Russian friends!

After I got back, I contacted Alex and we shot a few of his scenes, including his punching out a car window, and then spent the rest of the day getting background plates for the car chase. I’ve already cut all of today’s footage, so next I’m going to slap comp the car chase and see how it works. I’m stoked!

On the front of other movies, I’ve been busy doing research and fleshing out the stories for “Derek”, my movie that attacks modern spiritualism and reveals it for what it really is, and “Ruby White and the Cross of Christ”, which is is loosely based on the archaeological research of the late Ron Wyatt. My buddy Trex has also started writing his action/adventure movie so things are looking good for shooting three movies back to back a year from now.

I've always been a stickler for releases. And I keep them too-I still have releases from six years ago. It's the one area of filmmaking where I put my rebellious nature aside and play by the rules.

Good news! I started on the slap comps for the car chase and it looks awesome! I did just the first 30 seconds to see if it'd all work and it does. The plan now is to separate the backgrounds into categories (front, rear, side) and position them under corresponding shots. Then I'll arrange the backgrounds to tell the story of the chase. When I'm happy with what clips I've selected, I'll remove all the effects and export an EDL of the chase into After Effects. Bring everything online and I'm ready to start compositing.

A few grabs from yesterday's shoot. This time I tried converting the footage to the Kodak colorspace as suggested in Stu's book. Thoughts?
