Ripping Content off DVD's

I am working on a project where I have to rip footage off of DVD's. The client had some of their past videos stored on a DVD, but it's not in QT, it's in those files that a DVD creation software would use.
My question is, what is the best way to rip that footage and get it into my NLE? Thanks in advance.

If it isn't a commercial disc, then something as simple as MPEG Streamclip will convert to an easy set up for FCP on a Mac.

Good call, David.
Figured that went without saying - same goes for Cinematize.

Yup... only for legal use, folks. Though, I didn't think Cinematize was able to rip copy-protected discs.

I'll also add that I absolutely hate getting footage from clients on DVD. The footage is so highly compressed that the ripped video isn't going to hold up very well in editing.

Get a Super 8 filter and make it look vintage???

Sorry if I wasn't clear - that was my point, Cinematize will rip unprotected DVDs to any codec installed on your system. Very handy when working with DVD material from clients.

No, that was my bad. I assumed David was bringing up the legality of ripping unauthorized copies and not talking about the capabilities of the software.

I second that.
I tell my clients "I'll try my best, don't expect amazing quality" but it usually turns out to their liking. I don't even go through the conversion thing.
The way I do it is by plugging the DVD player output to my HVX and capture on miniDV.
Then I firewire it in normally from my camera and use it in the NLE.

take care,

Well, what I normally do is open the VOB file of the DVD with Quicktime Player, select in and out point, and export to my codec of choice. No need for additional software

EDIT- I forgot I could set in and out points in QT :)

Handbrake works as well, but I use Mac the ripper and Mpeg Streamclip because Handbrake won't encode into QT as naturally.
