RIP: Robin Williams

Just read about that. What a tragic loss.

"Hook" is in my top 5 favorite films of all time.

I'm gutted - so many great films, great characters, great performances - What dreams may come stands out for me.

Depression is a terrible thing. Despite his drug and alcohol detours he had a great heart. I hope his death brings more awareness to mental illness. He was one of mine and my wife's favorite actors. Man what a loss.

Very sad indeed. He's done a couple of my favourite.

The list goes on....

For such a big star, he seemed like a very gracious person. Remember awhile back when he was on the cover of the NY post doing Tai Chi in a fountain in Central Park? The day before I was picking up a piece of gear @ B&H and Robin Williams walks up to the store by himself to go shopping. It only takes a few minutes for people to recognize him, and soon he has 20 people around him. If it was me, I would have booked it...but he stayed, took pictures, and chatted with everyone for 15 min before excusing himself to go inside and shop.

Alot of comedy comes from a place of darkness, and it looks like it was true with him. My heart goes out to his family. I saw that his last tweet was celebrating his daughters 25th birthday....so sad.

“I used to think the worst thing in life was to end up all alone. It’s not. The worst thing in life, is to end up with people who make you feel all alone.”

~ Robin Williams' character*

The next time I watch Aladdin, I think his "you ain't never had a friend like me" rendition will sound different.

I will miss him dearly.

The news of his death hit me like a ton of bricks. Just such a sad, tragic waste.
I've lost friends to addiction and a niece to depression/suicide.
Addiction + depression = bad, bad news...

I'll miss your comic/tragic/manic genius, Robin.

The question from a fan in a Sirius XM interview last year was innocent — what do you think you'd be doing if you didn't become a comedian? —
and within seconds Robin Williams was impersonating physicist Stephen Hawking getting a lap dance at a strip club.
"Now don't sit on the keyboard!" Williams said, coaxing laughs from a few dozen people in a Manhattan studio.

The photo of his daughter he posted on her 25th birthday in his last tweet:

Don't you people think celebrity actors get enough attention from the media as it is? Got nothing against Lauren Bacall or Robin Williams, but I thought this was a Filmmakers' forum.

Is it not true that just about every TV channel, newspaper, magazine and social media network in the world had this covered 10 times over?
Besides, I can't relate to a celebrity actor any more than I can to a celebrity rapper. But the Sarah Jones tragedy, now that's something I can relate to. It's the kind of thing I want to read about on dvx.

Reading about it in a newspaper isn't the same as talking it over with others. When my mom said, "Did you hear that Robin Williams died?" it wasn't just to share information, but to share emotions.

The same thing, by the way, could be said about art (in fact it was said about art, by Leo Tolstoy, in his book What Is Art?).

This is the "Cafe DVX" subsection of the forum, where we get to talk about things off topic --- well, where we officially get to talk about things off topic.
