RIP - Laserdisc

Funny, I like everybody else, thought it was already long dead. I remember a friend's Dad got one in the early 80's, and that was the only one I had actually seen since then. Surprisingly, I guess they still released movies on them. I even found 37 pages of movies released on LD but not DVD- http://www.dvd-register.com/Never_Issued_On_DVD.pdf , including The Bionic Woman.

I saw the original "Basic Instinct" on Laser Disc in college. That's right, our library had it and Fatal Attraction for the film students. I've never seen another film on Laser Disc but the quality was very nice.

Okay, I just got some laserdiscs. But every time I put the needle on the disc, nothing happens. I just hear this horrible screeching sound. I don't get it. I wired it to my TV and it just won't work.

Sold off a top-of-the-line Pioneer player plus library of discs, several years ago.

To finance purchase of a DVX100A, as a matter of fact.

LaserDisc actually supported some interesting features for educators. We had two (both lost in the flooding last June) that came with a little wireless barcode reader. The idea was that the educational LD (our demo was some old PBS documentary about the civil rights movement) would come with a book full of barcodes, with each barcode telling the player to go to a specific "chapter" (in DVD terms, don't know if they used that on LD or not). Fun to play with on a slow day in the back room... :D

Useful for museum displays and simulators, too. Years back worked on design and construction of space shuttle cockpit simulators for museums and theme parks, and all the out-the-window graphics were run off laserdiscs.

Don't laugh, but I still have FOUR laser disc players in my studio. Two RCAs and two Pioneers. The Pioneers do the auto-flip thing, so you don't have to flip the disc. :)

I actually watch it with English subtitles. The Japanese dialogue matches the animation far too well to pass up.

Yeah, original language is always better but...
Its a nostalgia thing for me, (like kung fu flicks) when i first saw it, it was with the english. Now they dont even give u a choice. They have some new dub. which is really bad. plus they remastered it and it looks like they used a heavy sharpening filter:( + crushed the blacks.
