Rig sticks and steadi..

Im spit that thought

If you are looking to 'fly' then inconsidered mass above the gimbal is something to be minimised where possible my first version had many holes drilled in it

I would think it would be a user upgrade for those who find the rig part of thier professional daily life

But not worth is for the happy amateur

Will show another version with sexier nuts etc as soon as those lil handles turn up

looks just about ready for production

did you say you were going to shorten the joints in the next mod?

I was watching the z DSLR shooter vid and it really doesn't look very stable at eye level height, the girl however is much sexier than the geezer in the halfinchrails vid

I have three shortening options I am considering the pros and cons of each - deffo a few mm can be trimmed in all cases

I find the 'up' from the handles unaesthetic

Girls - Well one cant win - Id have been in trouble if Id got a girl - but I do have an appointment with a circus artiste next month I hope trouble is I have to shoot a hotel on the same day :( but something has to pay for all this tinkering

I'm still struggling with a monitoring solution, if only the MKII had a swing out LCD. I'm thinking about mounting a 5.6" ikan LCD low (300gsm) and adding a counterweight (mic, led light, or monitor battery) to the other side. The other option is to strap the LCD to my left forearm.

I have a crappy 8.9" SD monitor that does 16:9 4:3 switching but the squashed image doesn't really bother me that much while shooting.

I have just weighed the unit - 840g, less than 2 lbs

With skate wheel attached but not the frotto plate

there is an element of added mass in that the rear is weighted to some extent so a non flyer version could be a little lighter

S

That gives it (massive) extra pan inertia in on a stabilizer rig and makes drop onto the shoulders when handholding

S

got a pic?

how much does this weight weigh?

I'd rather just velcro on my LCD battery or a zoom H4n or wireless receiver.

wow sweet !! that is starting to sound real good in the weight dep.

Of course someone ridiing accesories could swap out the mass for ali and bolt their accesory on

Saving 50g or so on the core rig

S

ahh ok only 50g my battery is about 150g, have you done any testing on an upper weight limit for correct balance or is it just a matter of it getting too heavy to fly?

Hey Sam if you wanted to get a shot that was as close as you could get to a locked down shot would you put it on your shoulder or fly it on the blackbird?

Id use shoulder and IS - this is the only situation where I would suggest IS has value - lock offs

With no IS id still use shoulder

Id seek a wall lamppost etc to lean on

Id crouch and put the rig on my knees for a lower angle

Id use 50+mm and hide a moving background/horizon in bokeh and defocus

Id edit short cuts

Forget lockoffs with a stabiliser unless you are going to trim the rig for that shot - IMO

Id use a tripod for subjects that are stationary - buildings etc handheld works for filming people where your instability is hidden by following them

Interestly to me the BTS video of me waffling on - shot by my BBC buddy with my EX1 in four long shots hadnheld no rig- he DOES NOT LOCK OFF but does little moves all the time that hide his wobbles - v clever - he has developed a shooting style that 'just works' with his kit - Its not a look I like but it does work - Ive been fighting to get the 5d to 'just work'

- Again we were clever in choosing a clean background for that film that makes wide on the EX1 look ok - if we had shot it somewhere busy it would have looked $hit

Its about IMO not pushing round pegs into square holes

I've just emailed you with some more questions. I've narrowed my choices to your rig and a modified redrock, either way I want one of your follow focus units for certain.
